Displacements - what's your take?

I will say that the layoffs on 9/30 are "convenient" from the employer cost perspective. Yet, so were the earlier ones throughout the year. It is hard however to stomach losing bonus and 401k match so late in year. Would be better to just get displaced on Jan 1 - where the emp is not giving up anything.

IMHO, it seems that WF is getting rid of the "undesirables" as well as the ones who don't fit the new location mode. Its all over the board. Yet, we, the displaced pay the price.

The only benefit is, we are gone from the toxicity of the environment, we are gone from the daily worry "am I next...!" thoughts. Is there something better? Time will tell. Will I miss my coworkers? YES. That is an unequivocable answer. YES.

The Wells Fargo today is not the one I started working for years ago. It is completely different. Cutthroat. Conniving. Political BS. Pitting co-workers against each other at review time. Yep. Totally different. I think there must be something better out there. Better for the career, better for the soul, better for learning. Just......better.

Thats my .02 for the day.....working through the grief process and separation process and everything that entails.

Its real.

Generous

According to Moneycontrol, TCS is offering one of the most generous severance packages seen in the Indian IT sector. Employees will first receive three months of notice period pay, after which severance payouts will range from six months to two years of salary, depending on the length of service. Long-serving staff with 10-15 years of experience may receive packages worth up to 1.5 years of pay. Those eligible for early retirement will also be given all retirement benefits, including insurance, in addition to severance.

Employees who have been on the “bench” — without projects — for more than eight months are also impacted. Their exit packages will be smaller, typically limited to the three months’ notice pay. TCS said it will provide career transition assistance, including covering outplacement agency fees for at least three months for junior associates.

The restructuring follows earlier reports that TCS planned to cut about 2 percent of its workforce, or over 12,000 jobs. The IT employees’ union NITES has accused the company of forcing around 2,500 employees in Pune to resign, a claim TCS has strongly denied. The company maintains that only a limited number of staff have been affected and that the initiative is aimed at “realigning skills” in line with future requirements.

This wave of layoffs highlights the pressure facing traditional IT firms as automation and AI adoption accelerate. Clients are increasingly demanding advanced digital solutions and expect their outsourcing partners to deliver with smaller, more specialized teams. TCS, which employs more than 600,000 people worldwide, is now reshaping its workforce to focus on areas such as AI infrastructure, automation, and advanced analytics, while winding down legacy roles.

More cuts in Texas

  • DSTV Inc. - 169 layoffs in Irving tied to State Department visa pre-processing, some may be rehired by USCIS.
  • Texas Instruments - 163 layoffs at Dallas plant, 150mm production line closing by April 30.
  • Seatrium AmFELS - 91 layoffs in Brownsville as company sells yard for $65 million.
  • Urban Alchemy - 99 layoffs in Austin after city ended contract with the nonprofit.

Opppsss, More Cuts

Spirit Airlines will furlough 103 flight attendants at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport starting December 1, according to a WARN notice filed with Michigan’s Labor and Economy Opportunity division. The airline called the move temporary but did not specify how long it will last.

Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on August 29 and announced plans to scale back operations in some markets. The affected workers, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants, will be subject to protections under the WARN Act, which requires 60 days’ notice for certain plant closures or mass layoffs.

Hiring Plans at 16 year low

US layoffs fell in September, but hiring plans dropped to their lowest level in 16 years, according to new data. At the same time, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway agreed to acquire Occidental Petroleum’s OxyChem unit in a $9.7 billion deal, Tesla reported record Q3 EV deliveries, and OpenAI became the world’s most valuable private company with a $500 billion valuation.

More Iowa Cuts

Iowa lost 220 jobs in September as John Deere and Burlington Trailways announced layoffs, according to state and company filings.

John Deere reported on Sept. 17 that it would cut 141 employees, including 101 at a Waterloo plant and 40 at its Des Moines Works site in Ankeny. The company cited seasonal farming demand and fluctuating production schedules as the reason for the reductions.

The following day, Burlington Trailways said it would lay off 79 workers and end its intercity bus routes. Most of the cuts take place at the company’s West Burlington headquarters, with additional layoffs in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Burlington and Davenport. Rising insurance costs, unstable carrier partnerships and uncertainty around federal grants drove the decision.

The Iowa DOT said Jefferson Lines will take over most of the routes, starting service as soon as the day after Burlington ends operations, and will hire some of the displaced workers. In fiscal 2024, more than 67,000 passengers boarded Burlington Trailways buses in Iowa.

Layoffs: Reality for the folks older than 50 l

New data shows 24% of people laid off between ages 50-65 can't find another job.

Those who do? Average 11% pay cut.

Men take 15% hits, women 7%.

The wait is worse: 55-64 year olds spend 26 weeks unemployed vs 19 weeks for younger workers.

Many settle for jobs without benefits, crushing retirement plans.

Half of older workers expect gradual retirement transitions.

Reality? 70% get the full stop treatment.

Save young or work forever. There's no middle ground.

Do the right thing, before you end up on the street with the people you just laid off.

It’s time for our illustrious CEO, Ste Ve Pru Sak, to actually lead. He’s losing his biggest asset – the people who keep this place running – and he doesn’t even see it. When you lose the experience and talent that make your company function, you’re sc--wed.

The town hall was an absolute disaster. You put your CIO, with an accounting degree from Stephen F. Austin, in charge of a billion-dollar tech group and front and center at the meeting? That’s embarrassing. Then there’s your SVP of HR with a University of Phoenix degree, and a GM of supply chain who’s never run supply chain before. These people aren’t qualified, yet they’re making decisions that drag the company down.

Meanwhile, the folks doing the actual work – the ones generating revenue – are getting laid off because of leadership’s bad decisions. Optics matter, and right now the optics are terrible. Employees don’t trust leadership at all.

Ste Ve, if your team su-ks, you replace your OC and DC – that’s how it works in football and in business. You’re smart enough to know this. Pay for real experts, bring in leadership that knows what they’re doing, and stop cutting the people who keep this company alive. Otherwise, the “parents” (shareholders, board, whoever’s really in charge) won’t keep you around much longer.

Do the right thing, before you end up on the street with the people you just laid off.

Layoffs Peak

U.S. employers cut nearly 950,000 jobs through September 2025, the highest number of layoffs since 2020, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Cuts could surpass 1 million this year. While still far below the 2 million layoffs in the same period of 2020, the rise highlights a weakening labor market. Hiring plans have also dropped sharply, with companies expecting to bring on 58% fewer workers compared to last year.

The government shutdown could lead to additional job losses, and data from ADP shows private payrolls fell by 32,000 in September. However, layoffs slowed in September to about 54,000, down 37% from August.

The Federal Reserve cut interest rates in September and expects two more cuts this year, aiming to support businesses and consumers. Lower borrowing costs may help stabilize hiring, but ongoing challenges such as higher costs and new technology continue to pressure employers.

Economists expect Friday’s government jobs report to be delayed due to the shutdown, with private estimates forecasting only about 50,000 jobs added last month.

Right size or Down size?

It’s disheartening to now know that leadership’s idea of the ideal org size is always smaller. It’s also disheartening to hear many people on this board say similar things - “we could use less of x or y groups.” Makes me wonder if anyone actually knows how to properly operate a company of this size and complexity.

Bellingham’s proposed 2026 budget has layoffs, service cuts and a new tax

Mayor Kim Lund’s proposed 2026 budget cuts the equivalent of 30 full-time jobs, trims city services and urges the City Council to enact a new sales tax for public safety in an attempt to reduce a projected $10 million deficit. In all, the $543 million spending plan eliminates 40 total positions, many of which are vacant already as officials saw a fiscal crisis looming earlier this year, according to Lund’s budget message to the City Council on Monday.

First anniversary of the October 2nd 2024 layoffs

A year passed by after bitter memories of early morning email followed by a mechanical layoff meeting with the VP and HR. There was no appreciation what you have done. The interesting part was I was very active with multiple projects at that time!
It took few months to get back into working. Feeling good 😊
Good luck to all who are working hard out there!

Layoffs

On a recent visit to Home office, I noticed an open bar (with paid servers) providing free beer and wine each evening we were there. I’m at a bit of a loss as to how this helps clients and why it is better to have this than the home office representatives who were laid off.

This is Typical indian IT services Business Model - hire fresher low cost worker and lay off old ones

This is Typical indian IT services Business Model , fool the government that they are crating new employment and get tax break for decades.

Low pay unlimited work - and constant presssure to hire fresher low cost worker and lay off old ones who ran out of steam as low pay unlimited work leads to health deteoration - corporate strategy get rid of them before they society notices and hire fresh blood.
Create new employment by laying offf old staff and show fresher hiring as new employment created. Get purchase order placed new SEZ addresses and keep getting tax break.

AI Farley speaking out both sides of his mouth

So saw the article today: Wall Street Walks Away From Ford as CEO Farley Flounders - 24/7 Wall St. https://share.google/f5JfUZAue6kJArNq4

Astounds me. When will companies figure it out. Fire employees bring in AI to replace them. Who will be able to afford their products being unemployed /replaced by AI??

Make it make sense!!

Gone all together

Funny that they let me and most my stores staff go a year ago thinking they could have just one person running the store only find out that the school due to lack of transparency and staff to help the students have gotten rid of Follett all together. I guess it didn't go the way they thought.

Prepare for the Worst

Will Cisco engage in another round of layoffs? yes. 100%
Will Cisco LRs happen next week? in November on the Q1 earnings call? in February on the Q2 earnings call? in May for Q3 or August for Q4/FY ? yes, probably.

Is Cisco bad? no. Cisco us a soulless entity (a corporation) that exists to enrich it's owners (shareholders). Some of the people who lead Cisco may be 'bad' but that is a value judgement.

You, the employee, have a choice to make. You can work and consume based on yesterday's economy or you can make some changes now.

You WILL get laid off and the economy, hiring environment and future looks bleak. These are facts and why you and your colleagues are feeling hyper stressed right now. IT feels unnatural. It feels different.

In the past a looming LR was a bad feeling, now its panic.

Use that panic to do something.

There are essentially two levers that you have control of, Your personal investing and your personal spending.

one the spending side the alarm klaxon should be wailing right now. start with the big rocks, for maost of you these are housing, transportation, healthcare, debt servicing ann education. For some of you it's bourbon, handbags or gadgetry.
This is not a "Latte Factor" discussion, saving $4 a day will not cut it.
Go hard. Be relentless. Sell your luxury car (while you can) and buy a reliable one. no one cares.
Trade down to a smaller, more affordable house in a nice neighborhood.
Review all of you insurance and healthcare needs and find ways to reduce expenditures.

on the investing side, build a cash reserve equal to 6 moths of expenses (at a minimum) Money Markets still earn close to 4% which is a great return for short term investments.

while you are doing that make sure you are investing enough into your 401K to get the company match (I don't work for Cisco but assume 4-5%) once you have your 6 months of expenses, max your 401k.

One benefit this gives you is that it helps you to remain tied to your ethical anchor. your principles and values matter. Financial stress creates ethical dilemmas. Financial Independence allows you to avoid many of those.

Cisco doesn't care about you because Cisco can't care about you. Some people at Cisco are good, some are bad. Embrace the good, reject the bad and stay true to yourself.

Blame the government along with ExxonMobil

Let’s not let the government off the hook as they are enabling ExxonMobil and others. They had no problem letting blue collar jobs off shore for cheap products that are “reduced carbon emission” which is a joke in itself. And then letting wages be undercut by illegals given free access across the border.

Now high paying high skill jobs are being worked remote along with rotating “temporary” jobs under L1 visa which are in fact a permanent displacement of a full time person.

The government not only doesn’t care but don’t understand the magnitude and impact of all this and without a drastic shift in policy, it’s going to be very hard to put the genie sick in the bottle.
