Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Was it always this bad?

Maybe I’m naive, but I joined UHC in the BT era and my first town hall was one where he announced everyone was getting $50 to the UHC store to buy some swag. Then it was the new floating holiday. Just felt like the all employee meetings had energy and excitement and I felt like UHC was a great place to work.

Since BT’s death, it’s felt like a black cloud over the entire org. Like we’re in a free fall. Constant layoffs. Cutting employee benefits. RTO handled so poorly. Never accepting questions at the town halls and all employee meetings.

Was it always such a sh---y place to work, or was last December the catalyst for all this?

I used to love working here!! Been here 9 almost 10 years. I really liked BT. I remember I was here kind of when it shifted to him (I think) and his meetings and town halls were so great! I felt like he did and said things to make the employees feel appreciated. What happened to him last year was so tragic, I still can't believe it. He just seemed to have a different energy and belief in all of us at UHC. Now things seem bland. We work our as--s off and now because I'm a 26 my rrp was removed, cutting 401k contributions. If the top people would take even a small cut to put it back into the "little people" employees. We do a lot more than anyone could ever realize.

I was hired around the time of the 2008/2009 financial crisis. I remember when we had a town hall where we were told that raises weren't happening that year and that we should be grateful we still have a job. I'm not paraphrasing, that was the exact wording. Lately, it feels a lot like that. All the momentum towards employee benefits has shifted back to not caring about employees under Hemsley's new reign. The only reason they brought him back is to cut, cut, cut, cut, cut.

It’s been a slow bleed over the 10 years I’ve been here (other than a slight correction during COVID where the market favored employees) but has rapidly accelerated over the past year yes.

Monetary Bravos cut. ESPP lookback provision and discount % cut. RRP eliminated for anyone under GL27. RTO. Negligible raises unless you jump around internally no matter your common review grade. Layoffs and offshoring accelerating again.

Management used to at least acknowledge employee concerns with corporate speak but now they just seem to ignore them entirely.

I remember the days when we focused on culture and people cared about the work. I was in UHC and we had a fantastic ceo who is now leading another competitor. Now it’s just offshoring, cuts and layoffs with no care for the employee, consumers or providers just hitting numbers. I’m retiring end of year so good luck to you all. Agree on cfo that was odd

Stock took a 50% haircut in an all time high dow and spy. It's a value trap or zombie company. Insurers are getting the bullseye from politicians. Unh cannot grow organically. Only cut now

@a2 I was laid off under Wichmann during Covid and rehired under Witty.

Not sure where you’re getting that Wichmann saved anyone from cuts

This town hall was pretty tone deaf. There is a lot going on in Washington DC right now that will impact the company and yet not one mention of any of it. Maybe SH is inspiring to work for but he’s not an inspiring speaker.

It’s gone up & down over the years (I have over a decade & a half in) but def taken a GIANT downturn since BT was mu---red. :/
The new CFO was appalling, sh-t talking his brother like that (not to mention all tatted & pierced people who aren’t corporate shills ?!?), calling the Congo the worst place in the world—the ‘white savior’ energy was SO cringe—and then add in SH increasingly coming off as a guy in serious cognitive decline (doesn’t know how to silence a phone?!?), it’s getting scary up in here. :/

I’ve been with Optum for over 10 years and SH was at the helm then also. Personally it has gotten much worse since 2020. Offshoring was always an issue in India, but it has increased significantly with the buildout in Ireland. When SH stepped back in earlier this year I had a hope that offshoring would slow down in Ireland, but I’ve lost all hope at this point

Optum certainly never got a $50 company store credit. That was just folks at UHC. I think one year we got store credit but that was division driven and definitely wasn’t $50.

Best it’s been since I’ve been here was under Wichmann. Felt like he saved our behinds when many companies just made immediate cuts during COVID. Felt like we were making a difference as well. Under Witty it felt like he just didn’t care about the U.S. and then began the insane amounts of offshoring.

I used to really enjoy working here. It has steadily gotten worse and worse over the past year. Just awful.
