Never mind data centers

Remember these? Do you remember the Sun Microsystems' Sun Ray center? Even prior to Oracle taking Sun over? Talk about the opportunity of extending cloud computing into every home in the country. And, personally, I think Oracle blew it. As someone who was in that transition, they made us get rid of the Sun Rays and use Windows based laptops. Talk about a quantum leap backwards.

Key Advantages of Sun Ray

Stateless Architecture: The Sun Ray client contains no local operating system or persistent user data. If a device loses power or fails, user data remains safe on the server.

Zero Desktop Administration: Because no software runs locally, administrators do not need to patch, update, or configure individual desktop units. Firmware updates are pushed automatically from the server.

High Security: Processing occurs entirely on centralized servers (such as Sun/Oracle servers running Solaris or Linux). Users cannot corrupt or tamper with the local display endpoint, making it ideal for high-security or sensitive environments.

Hot-Desking Mobility: Users can unplug their smart card from one Sun Ray terminal, plug it into another anywhere on the network, and instantly resume their exact desktop session right where they left off.

Cost Efficiency: The hardware endpoints are simpler and cheaper than full traditional desktop workstations, and they do not need hardware upgrades when new applications roll out on the server side.

Quiet and Low Power: The physical desktop units operate silently, generate less heat, and consume minimal power compared to standard desktop PCs.

The misconception was it was Solaris only but it could support Windows or Linux clients as well.

I wonder what AI would say? Probably the same as most humans. Stupid! What Oracle knows about hardware would fit in a thimble and rattle.

Ford acquired its ADT joint-venture "Canopy" and discontinued its standalone Pickup Cam. Original hardware and app subscribers are receiving full hardware refunds and are no longer supported.

The Ford “leadership” bio:
He also co-founded and led the AI-driven venture Canopy from inception through a joint venture and its successful acquisition by Ford Motor Company.

How do you call a venture that refunded all customer money SUCCESSFUL???
Only at Ford would this person still have a job.

Ennoconn is finally taking the hardware over, can’t be good news for jobs

Ennoconn will design, manufacture, warrant, supply and ship self-checkout and point-of-sale hardware directly to NCR Voyix customers, with NCR Voyix acting as a hardware sales agent coordinating the purchase and delivery of hardware to customers. As a result of the hardware transition, NCR Voyix is expected to record revenue from hardware sales on a net basis, starting in the second quarter of 2026.

For those who get laid off, what's stopping one to just not return their computer/phone?

If I were to be laid off, I'd return them but unwillingly. I have 2 systems from Dell, a corporate phone, and a few other items issued to me. I know for a fact that Dell can simply de-activate your machine's access to VPN's and such and it wouldn't exactly be difficult to wipe the computer clean and start fresh, if you wanted to.

The two systems I have are likely worth a combined $1100 at MOST. The phone is an iphone 10x, which obviously would have it's service cut but, you could theoretically put service onto it yourself (out of your pocket.) That phone is worth maybe 150.. The other device I have is worth closer to 1k I think and is the only thing I'd want to keep if possible. I'd say only about 100 people in the entire company have this device. I'd tell you what it is but I'd give myself away as to what org I'm in and what department I'm in..

But, what if a laid off person was to just not return their computer, badge, etc...?
