How the he-l does it actually go down???

Can someone explain how these layoffs actually get determined? I feel like it’s just purely cost, but based on how pointless and anti productive it has ended up being I’m not sure if they actually give it any thought. Manager has been giving us the standard BS. (Saying a lot without actually saying anything) lol.

Kraken Reduces Workforce by 150; IPO Now Expected 2027

Crypto exchange Kraken recently laid off approximately 150 employees. The company cited increased efficiencies from deploying artificial intelligence. These staff reductions could delay its planned US initial public offering. Kraken now reportedly aims for a public debut in 2027. Other crypto firms also cut jobs this year, often citing AI use.

Arbitrator Finds UO Disregarded Seniority in Librarian Layoffs

The University of Oregon disregarded seniority during librarian layoffs. A neutral arbitrator ruled against the university's decision. The arbitrator found both junior and senior librarians were qualified. Contract terms required seniority to be a priority in such cases. This ruling followed layoffs impacting eight library positions in summer 2025.

It Was my Final Day – The Bard of Verizon

I wrote this poem when I got made redundant from Verizon in November 2015. Still relevant today.

It Was my Final Day – The Bard of Verizon

It was my final day.
I looked around the office.
At all the empty desks.
I could tell.
The building was now an empty shell.

Where is everyone ?
Tom, Di-k and Harry my good friends all now gone.
I wondered if ?
Just like me they had been hit by a RIF.
I shake my head in disbelief and want to cry
That must be the reason why.

Meanwhile at Verizon HQ.
Fran Shamo's latest financial report was sadly nothing new.
We must do something radical to improve our profit margins as they are still down
He said with a frown.

The board racked their brains for hours.
And even more hours.
Until Lowell McAdam jumped to his feet he had a brainwave.
"Eureka I have the perfect plan.”
"That's why I am the top man."
“How about if..."
"We have another RIF ?"

There was whooping, smiling, laughter and high fives all round.
The company’s profits would soon rise a solution had been found.
Lowell McAdam then said "Ring The Bell for a job well done we deserve some praise."
"Let's also award ourselves a well deserved 20% pay raise."

The board couldn't care less.
If the RIF made their minions lives a mess.
The poor Verizon staff.
Unlike their leaders could neither smile or a laugh.

Once they were many now they are just too few.
Lowell McAdam's grand plan would give them all more stress and work they could do without.
That much they knew.

Their future is not going to be that bright.
All doom and gloom probably describes it just about right.
And yes they work under a cloud constantly worrying if ?
They are going to be a casualty of yet another Verizon RIF.

Anyone else finding their anger levels through the roof?

With layoffs over our heads, no jobs and managers making up stuff to pretend you are IM instead of meets I go home on Fridays with so much anger. It starts again Sunday night. You gaslight people everyday and this is what you get. Is this week the week my life gets altered through your cr-ppy layoffs? And May is mental health month. Hahahahahaha. What they are doing is literally a recipe for mental health challenges.

Layoffs

I am perplexed at the people who are touting that there is going to be a layoff on May 28 and it’s going to be massive. You all really need to stop. There’s always layoffs in departments that are under performing or where there is duplicative work being done, but there has not been a notification to leadership that there is going to be mass layoffs on May 28 so please stop scaring everyone. In the meantime – all of the miserable people that just left to stir sh-t are going to get this 85 negative marks because you’re so focused on the drama and the negativity that you don’t know what else to do then to check this website daily. Do something better with your life.

Layoff Survival Fund

Survived this round. There will be more rounds.

Assuming that I have about 7 years of experience, late 30s, mid 200K total comp, wife is not working, have a toddler. No debt/mortgage (renting in So Bay). Working in sales.

Is there a rule of thumb for how much should someone like me have to have saved to hedge layoff risk?

Novartis Reduces Biomedical Research Staff Amid Restructuring

Novartis is trimming its biomedical research arm. This follows recent staff consolidation moves. A company spokesperson confirmed individual impacts to a select number of employees. This strategic decision is difficult for those affected. Novartis employed 5,720 professionals in this department at the end of 2025.

You are all d-mb af

No one here knows when a lay off is going to happen. There might be 4 people maximum that know prior to VPs getting a heads up day of

everyone should reflect on their personal contributions and what theyre bringing to the table Respected efficient top contributors aren’t on here getting scared or fear mongering - so reflect on where you fall and make the case for staying

To the trolls: unless you have founded proof - stop ruining people’s days. You’re literally
Making this worse for everyone.

Possible mass layoff next year

I verbally heard in a bunch of meetings where Q3 2027 is when contract renewals are going to happen with US and Canadian staffing agencies and given how the CEO and the executives have been rooting for "APAC" (India) and AI. There is a huge chance that they are not going to renew their US and Canada contracts.
