Doing an AMAZING job and the bare minimum both amount to the same 2-3% raise.
Your bonus can be arbitrarily reduced in any given year because they feel like it, like when people lost bonus pay because of Quality issues despite having no impact on Quality in their daily work.
Promotions are few and far between.
Each time you are promoted, your chance of RIF increases.
We’re all constantly given more work without more pay because they are actively reducing headcount, but not expectations.

What’s the motivation to try hard? Is there any?

If you are a manager (Tech-LOB) then you are aware that couple of months ago we were asked by our MDs to give few team members for RIF. To meet that 'quota' my Dir made me open couple of new positions under me & peers.
Last week I was told that the RIFs to continue and if open positions are unfilled by Sep-15th, then it undermines our future work estimates and some of my current members will be let go along with cancelling open jobs. I have confirmed this informally with my close manager colleagues (SVP & Directors) . So now I am chasing my recruiters for quick interviews for wrap up !(sounds crazy, right?).
