According to the Challenger layoff report, US hiring is at its lowest since the Great Recession, with nearly 1 million layoffs this year. AI gets the blame, but the deeper cause is decades of offshoring, financial engineering, and policy choices that depress wages while flattering headline stats. The template was set in 1965 with the Border Industrialization Program, maquiladoras importing inputs duty free, paying cents on the dollar, then re exporting with tariffs only on value added. By the 1980s there were 1,000 plus plants, Ford and GE shifted tens of thousands of jobs, and media reframed losses as cheaper goods.

Tariff cuts on Chinese imports in 1979 plus a new corporate mindset hardened the shift. Jack Welch cut about 115,000 US jobs at GE by 1985 and pioneered white collar outsourcing. The Reagan years touted job creation while more than 1.6 million jobs moved abroad, only 28 percent of new jobs were high skill, and young workers’ wages fell sharply. The 1990s added NAFTA and China PNTR, 879,000 trade certified job losses with true totals far higher, longer work hours masked stagnation, buybacks and options enriched executives while households captured about 3 percent of market gains and took on nearly 40 percent of new debt.

The skills shortage story enabled H-1B expansion and loopholes. Outsourcing firms used cap exempt affiliations to file year round and undercut pay, with 2013 probes showing 36 to 41 percent labor cost savings versus domestic hires. Today firms cite AI while filing thousands of H 1B petitions. Amazon cut roughly 27,000 roles from 2022 to 2024 plus 10,000 to 12,000 in 2025, yet logged 14,365 approvals across sponsor tiers. A proposed 100,000 dollar H 1B fee will not fix exemptions, contractor loopholes, or the 2017 tax code that still tilts savings offshore. Clarity first, action next, press representatives to close loopholes and demand truthful job ads, then keep building community so the pressure compounds.

3 yrs ago my children passed away from a rare form of cancer. This last yr my marriage fell apart. I've never even told anyone even close this at work. I dont want to be another sad story sounding pathetic, but I would very much like to be laid off. I want to feel something again, not numb, not seeing sad faces, fake faces at work. I've been thinking if I get a package I can go live in Mexico or something for a while, the people there seem happy. Any advice is welcome.

Stock price tanking. 700+ contractors let go with pretextual reason of "Sapience monitoring showed they were not being productive". There is no plan to back-fill the positions. Real reason they were let go was to simply cut costs! More cost cutting on the way! Watch out for stock insider trading. Execs will be selling stock soon!

Business Retail and TfB layoffs have been rumored since the IT layoffs in August. If it is going to happen, timing wise it makes sense to wait until after the holidays.

Everyone sounds surprised when this happens! It is the new world order. Expect it to happen and be prepared by saving as much money as possible. Keep your expenses down. No credit card debt, no car loans. Live modestly. Keep your resume updated. Keep your professional network current/ relevant.

I started investing a piece of my salary each paycheck into an index fund for emergencies like losing my job. It has grown into a years salary overtime. If I never need it will be for retirement.

It will happen. You will lose your job. We all will eventually. Don’t stress or lose sleep, be prepared!! No one is coming to save you!! Have a plan, especially if you have a family.

This is not a TMO thing, or an IT thing, it happens everywhere and will eventually hit everyone.

This week a big group heads to India including Penny, a few ELT and OC, Operations, and Digital. 30 GPs and directors will be touring cities in India to make a decision on where the Edward Jones Flag will be placed in India. This is the next round of Enterprise Reimagined they told us about called Sourcing and Shoring which means outsourcing more US jobs to India. Get ready all, you are not safe and this next phase of ER will be way bigger in job lose then anything we just went through. Another few hundred jobs will be eliminted and moved to India in 2026 and will be higher in 2027.

So I heard TD Mike and AMEX Sathish are at it again discussing layoffs. Imagine enjoying your holidays with family and then walking into work on January 6th, 2026 and being told "the bank didn't meet our goals so we have to let you go." That's literally what's going to happen to most of you. No notice. No warning. They're going to read right off a script to you with HR present and act like they care. What you need to do (right now) is find another role between now and December, grab a late January / Early February 2026 start date, and have it lined up for when they do these layoffs on Tuesday January 6th, 2026.
They'll say you can't get paid by them and work somewhere else but there's nothing they can do about that when you do. Take their money and make money in your new role. Double dip on this losing bank. Make them lose harder than they did last year when Russ tanked their stock price and made headlines. Make them lose harder than the board running JB off to bring in an absolute failure that didn't make it a year at Discover. Get the cards rolling now - nothing happens during the holidays (hiring wise) - people like Sathish are too busy taking selfies at Southpark Footlocker next to the Size 5 SB Dunks. I know one person was let go. That person told me entire team of three people were let go.

October 3rd sears let go of some Management employees in their call centers and the entire Spanish speaking agents who take incoming calls. On Dec. 1st more employees will be laid off.

Getting laid off is probably the best thing to happen to someone. You get a paid vacation for whatever your severance covers. You don’t have to work. All of your work is just dumped on some poor soul who was chosen to stay. You can do whatever you want. If I stay, I’ll be jealous of everyone who goes.

I just spoke to my PGL and she said layoffs are about to start at JRC. Many people let go. A few areas will close. She couldn't say who in my area but there will be alot. She left and went to a finalization meeting.

In today’s SETH opening remarks, MW’s finished talking about all the great work underway by saying that “what underpins all of this is our culture and workforce, the very best in our industry, and I wouldn’t trade them for anybody else’s.”

When he said that I immediately thought of all the US employees (the workforce he wouldn’t trade for anybody else) he fired so that he could hire someone into the same job in a different country (so basically traded for someone else)…. Did anyone else hear it that way?

Judging from what people have been reporting, the better you were at your job, the more essential you were to a project, the more experienced and skilled, the higher your chances of being laid off. I guess quality is expensive. I just wonder where the breaking point is, when everything will finally fall apart, seemingly all at once.
