I've been avoiding this for months. I told myself things would get better, that I could wait it out. But after the last round of reorgs happened and the latest gossip about more cuts, I've accepted that I need to leave. I really didn't want to go through the interview process again. It's exhausting and demoralizing. But I feel like I have no choice anymore. I can't stay somewhere that makes me this unhappy.

Laying off the people who do the work while keeping the people who just attend meetings. That's not a strategy. That's self destruction.

This isn't a post about rumors or Optum info, it's a post for folks that are hit by RIFs and are tight on funds. Being RIF'd is traumatic for many and in the storm one's focus could be clouded. If your money is tight and you contribute to the 401k you may want to consider immediately dropping your contribution to 0% or 1%, This will ensure your last paycheck is higher by slightly less than the amount you contribute (your tax burden will increase slightly), and even more importantly your severance check will not have whatever percentage deducted from it. Just a friendly tip for the folks get caught in the "axe the onshore web" to increase the take home.

Many people on my team in cyber are worried they’re next. Some well loved employees have already been let go and no one feels safe right now! Call me lazy if you want, but I'm not the one who reaches for layoffs every time expenses need to come down. There are a hundred ways to save money that don't involve cutting people. They just don't want to do the work to find them. I'm just returning the favor.

As soon as the layoff rumors start, I can't sleep. I am consumed with anxiety, I can't focus, I can't stop checking my inbox. How do the rest of you cope with this kind of uncertainty?

Who makes the list? Is it based on performance, salary, tenure, or luck? Which departments are getting hit hardest? Are newer employees safer or more at risk? What's the real business reason behind this? They won't tell us anything, so we're all just guessing and panicking.
