Productivity Surges Amidst Stable Job Market

Worker productivity saw a significant acceleration in the second quarter, outpacing expectations and helping to curb labor cost gains. Initial unemployment claims saw a slight uptick, but overall layoffs dropped to a two-year low in July, indicating a stable labor market. Economists suggest that the adoption of artificial intelligence may be contributing to this productivity surge. Despite these positive signs, the Federal Reserve may still consider interest rate hikes next month if inflation does not improve. The data suggests that AI buildout has not yet led to widespread job losses.

SK's travel

So nice to see that our intrepid CEO took time away from his busy travel schedule to appear on the field at Yankee stadium. Always love getting these updates on our jet-setting, pl----y, CEO who does no actual work aside from finalizing decisions on how to pay us all as little as possible.

Laid off last year... What's the current RTO policy?

I realize these types of questions get asked a lot. Searching for previous posts is ok but usually yields a variety of responses that made it difficult to determine the actual policy/practice.

Before I got laid off no one was enforcing 8 hours in the office for 3 days a week. So I went in for a bit then did most of my hours at home because I had literally no co-located coworkers.

Is there reporting now that shows if you left early to finish at home? Is it still 3 days a week (this role I applied for is in CSBB).

Assuming there's at least some leeway with Dr appts etc I don't mind being in office 3 days a week. But I thought I heard rumors of 4 or 5 days in office for some groups before I got laid off - usually investment employees.

Do you think there are stores even indirects didn't want?

I'm at the slowest store in a district by a long ways. They transitioned a store that is a fair amount busier then us. We went from 7 reps down to 5 before the big layoff. Now we are losing another rep to a different store. I have not heard if they are replacing that position. But you can not run on 4 reps. Any chance they just flat out close us because we are slow enough even indirects didn't want us? Has anybody seen that play out?

8/13 updates

Any new layoffs or news today? I feel so in the dark on whats going on as PLs are not discussing much. Our team was not impacted, but we have several who took VSP. We were also told that PHCO BH was safe for August. But I know that with so many other departments that WERE impacted, that is going to trickle down and affect us all. I keep waiting for that "transparency" that is preached about at every town hall.....

I’m pretty unnerved right now.

I feel like this is something bigger than just RTO FT.
There are no jobs listed and I’m still waiting on hearing on an internal job I interviewed for weeks ago.
HR is missing in action.
This is really weird it’s like something has happened behind the scenes or they know something cataclysmic is about to drop.
But I’m getting a very bad feeling on this entire shift.
Maybe in six months or even three we’ll see the big picture but right now it’s blurrier than a Monet.

Choosing America means Offshoring Jobs for Jane

The US brings billions in investments and how they thank the American employees by laying them off and offshoring those exact same jobs overseas and it is continuing. This is the biggest hypocrisy of the article published. Are investments coming in from Costa Rica, India and Manila? How are they giving back to America?

Literally crying at my desk this morning...

This place, it's stress, having been on so many teams, underpaid for years & realizing my loyalty means nothing, my never make mistakes in the work means nothing. I'm a 43yo man literally at his desk in tears because I can't make ends meet.

I got a notice about student loan repayments - mine will go from previously $50/mo to $850/mo after the SAVE fiasco. I will no longer have money for food, if I pay all my other bills & rent. Forget ever buying a home, just at the cusp of being really able to save in life, now this. This place has fu---d me over financially for YEARS & I've been unable to get out from under it.

No kids, never arrested, no points on my license, excellent credit, did all the right things in life, no illicit substance use, almost never drink, only for this company to underpay, overwork, & sc--w me simply because our Indian CEO can and will ship my job abroad for a third of the cost. This arbitrage isn't what I signed-up for, I signed-up for a fair progressive career.

So here I am, crying at my desk at Hopkins, can't take a sick day because Qasim is a sociopath & I'm on 'a list' of people who use ssl (what the actual fu-k, it's disgusting). Come find me, maybe help push me off the 3rd floor parking deck later, I'm not that heavy.

You read that right. This place is the root of all of my life problems. I'm a loser & deserve what's coming.

SP Plus Airport Jobs Cut

Over 300 employees at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport will lose their jobs. This layoff is due to a contract change. SP Plus lost its airport contract to LAZ Parking Texas LLC. Retention bonuses

This post on Reddit has a comment that someone’s husband was offered 100k counteroffer retention bonus when he tried to resign. Base pay 600k.
https://www.reddit.com/r/unitedhealthgroup/s/PfEIguU2fk

So the company that is laying people off throughout the year and gives pennies for raises to most of its employees will give a 100k retention bonus to what is probably a lower level exec who tries to resign (assuming lower level because the higher up execs make 7-10 figures.)

Message for UHG/UHC/Optum…. Your executives are not the face of the company, the people whose jobs bring them into direct daily interactions with your members are the face of the company. Minuscule raises that can’t even keep up with inflation, elimination of bonuses, rising caseloads all lower morale. You can’t improve your public image when the face of your company has low morale. No amount of company culture pep talk will fix this because your own employees don’t feel valued.

Union Blames Layoffs for Extendicare Admissions Halt

A union representing 281 workers at Extendicare Countryside is criticizing management for recent issues. They argue that corporate layoffs and cuts, not isolated problems, led to a provincial order to stop new admissions. Workers have voiced concerns about staffing levels and workloads for months. The union believes these issues directly impact resident care. They are calling for Extendicare to address staffing shortages and fill vacant positions.

District Faces Staff Reductions Due to Enrollment Decline

Mesa Public Schools is preparing to implement staff layoffs for the upcoming 2026-27 school year. This decision stems from a projected decrease in student enrollment, which directly impacts the district's funding. The district is hoping that attrition through retirements and resignations will mitigate the number of positions ultimately eliminated. While the exact number of affected employees has not been disclosed, the district is exploring various strategies to manage the reduction in force. These strategies include offering incentives for early retirement and considering involuntary transfers for some staff members.

County Faces Service Cuts Amid Tax Reform

Florida's Martin County is bracing for significant financial challenges if a statewide property tax reform proposal passes. This reform, appearing as Amendment 3 on the November ballot, would substantially increase homestead exemptions. Such an increase would drastically reduce the property tax revenue available to the county. Consequently, officials are considering widespread layoffs, new fees, and reductions in essential county services. Public safety departments are also expected to be impacted by these potential cuts.

School Board Reverses Layoffs, But District Cites Funding Gaps

The Chicago Board of Education voted to reverse hundreds of layoffs, allocating $100 million from anticipated state funding to reinstate positions. However, Chicago Public Schools officials stated that this amount is insufficient to bring back all affected employees. The district is surveying principals and laid-off teachers to determine critical staffing needs and potential reassignments. While many students will see familiar faces on the first day of school, not all educators will be able to return. The district plans to centrally hire back selected positions based on survey results.

Biopharma Job Cuts Plummet in July

July saw a significant decrease in biopharmaceutical industry layoffs, with a 94% drop in affected employees compared to the previous year. Only six companies initiated or planned workforce reductions, a 74% decrease in the number of organizations making cuts. Novartis reported the largest single layoff event, impacting 322 individuals. This sharp decline contrasts with July 2025, which saw a much larger workforce reduction due to Merck's extensive cost-cutting initiative. Overall, the biopharma sector experienced a notable slowdown in job cuts last month.

Telstra boss rakes in $6.8m but Triple Zero outage costs her.

Telstra chief executive Vicki Brady says “ultimate accountability” for July’s national Triple Zero outage rests with her, after the company’s board stripped $607,000 from her short-term bonus.

Brady was speaking as the company delivered its annual results on Thursday, with Telstra’s net profit rising 2.7 per cent to $2.4 billion. Brady’s total pay rose 11 per cent, to $6.8 million, and the telco says the failure that cut off Triple Zero calls has cost it almost no customers.

“There were things within our control that triggered the outage,” Brady said on Thursday, describing the board’s reasoning.

“As CEO, ultimate accountability rests with me for the outage.”

Telstra directors cut her individual performance multiplier by 20 percentage points, leaving her a short-term bonus of $2.762 million. Then-group executive of global networks and technology Shailin Sehgal took the same reduction, and the rest of the senior executive team, including chief financial officer Michael Ackland, lost 10 points each, taking a further $1.29 million out of the bonus pool.

Brady said the external investigation was still running and the board could impose further consequences through FY27 pay once it reports

This masthead (The Age + other publications), first revealed the outage was caused by a server that had reached the end of its supported life almost a decade ago and was never replaced, despite newer devices costing less than $30,000.

In its full-year results on Thursday, Telstra revealed its direct workforce is now 4 per cent smaller, at 29,334, and the telco has signalled it will keep cutting as it simplifies the business. The job losses lifted its redundancy bill by $92 million to $206 million.

That cost-cutting helped drive a full-year result that has delivered shareholders a bigger dividend and a fresh $1 billion share buyback.

I like working at Verizon

I'd like it even more if there were fewer cuts, but I can't lie that it's not a good job. I think there are many of us who feel the same way, and only mind the frequency of cuts, but otherwise enjoy our jobs (decent pay, decent benefits, great folks to work with, what's not to like?)

Don't try to improve things

I've seen good people try to make things better repeatedly. They proposed ideas, challenged bad processes, and tried to push change, and all they got for that was being put on the next layoff list. The only way to survive this place is to keep your head down and do what you're told. The new Dell way.
