Let’s look at this objectively:

  1. Given the mix of signals: yes, there is a non‐trivial chance something will happen (at least in some business units).
  2. No, the rumor of an across-the-board, massive layoff next Tuesday is not firmly substantiated. It’s best treated as a possibility being promoted by this contributors who are scared or repeating rumors, not a certainty.
  3. So if we were to assign rough probabilities (just an estimate):
    A. Some layoffs in certain units in the near term: ~60-70%
    B. A broad, company-wide massive layoff next Tuesday: maybe ~30-40% or less
    C. The status quo (no major layoffs) is still plausible: ~20-30%

Target has been doing smaller, quiet moves all year. There isn’t a need nor desire to do something so massive that it further erodes consumer confidence, invites more scrutiny from additional boycotts, and possibly drives away top talent while paralyzing those who stay. More likely it will be continued, surgical cuts while bolstering/hiring for areas that leadership believes will drive positive change for shareholders.

I know it’s tough not to panic, but take a breath. You have zero control over what happens to you and your peers, unfortunately.

Any truth to another round of layoffs in Oregon mid November

Has anyone else heard that rumor from Oregon about more layoffs coming in mid-November? I’m trying to figure out if there’s any truth to it. The only thing I’ve actually heard from people I work with is that some teams are merging and a few folks are being moved around. That could easily explain some of the chatter.

So when I saw a Reddit thread claiming that a supervisor told a tech “more layoffs are coming,” I wasn’t sure how much weight to give it. There’s been so much speculation lately that it’s hard to tell what’s legit and what’s just people trying to fill in the blanks. Has anyone heard anything?

What's the latest on OI rumors?

As an OI worker nobody has really said or heard anything at least in my little corner, albeit my team has never had layoff whispers or issues since I've been here, so now I'm really curious since OI has been mentioned a lot here.

Isn't OI quite a big sector? What kind of roles are we talking here?

Anyone in HR can confirm the slack bug?

Not asking for a rumor, or a guess, or a speculation. Can anyone in HR or anyone in a related part of the company that manages things like slack, or anyone who 'recently had dinner' with either of those people can confirm whether this is a bug or not?

We all know that layoffs are coming basically a week from now. Can anyone confirm or deny what's happening? So far the only 'official' word has been in the #slack-tips channel where they called it a bug that they're working on, but I am inclined to call bullsh-t. Murray and Success factor have been unaffected, though.

Rumours of Next Layoff?

Anyone or insiders hearing anything about another round of layoffs? Word going around is that more cuts could be coming soon, possibly linked to the recent divestitures and leadership changes. I’ve heard talk that Sales, Marketing, and Engineering might be hit again, especially non core or lower performing roles. Curious if anyone’s heard when this might happen or which groups are actually at risk.

Layoffs Next Week AGAIN :(

Just heard at a party last night that they are getting rid of even more people next week than they did last week. My understanding is that the economy is about to make a very huge and very drastic U-TURN after a HUGE announcement about someone in power.

Once that happens, all heel will break lose and Brian will have to accelerate his RIF plans.

This came from a very trusted source!

Interesting speakers at this week’s leadership powwow

So all the Big Swinging D!cks got together this past week to figure out how to get rid of more people or whatever and they had a bunch of guest speakers talk leadership to them. Interesting list:

  1. Andy Jassy - who runs a company notorious for sweatshop practices in the warehouses and highly political PIP and stack ranking culture for management.
  2. Marissa Meyer who basically took Yahoo out back and shot it after she took over - though granted it was already in deep sh!t but she certainly didn’t help.
  3. Steve Ballmet. Yes he built a nice arena for the Clippers but MSFT stock took off after he left and his Clippers are implicated in potentially one of the worst NBA salary cap avoidance schemes in decades. Apparently he and Stankey were having a grand old time according to my VP.

And these people were telling our leaders how to lead. Watch out over the next few weeks

So glad I am gone…

Exited last August via layoff with VSP. I often return to this board to see what’s happening. Hearing rumors of Oct 23 reminds me why I am so glad to be gone. 20 years in and glad for my gracious exit over a year ago. Bounced right into a new career I love and banked the entire enhanced severance. For those wishing you could go, maybe the 23rd will be the exit you don’t realize you need. Good luck everyone.

Is anything happening?

The mentioned they wanted to be done woth everything as soon as possible (end of fiscal year?). We are approaching the end of October and it seems nothing has happened. Does anybody know if anything has happened? Within my group it seems like the news has been forgotten.

Are the rumors about not that many drivers taking buyouts true?

None of the gossip I’m hearing makes much sense. Some people say no more than 1,000 drivers nationwide took the offer. Where I am, they’re actually looking to hire more. In other places, people are apparently complaining about too much OT because they’re understaffed. And yet, everyone keeps talking about more layoffs coming. I’m honestly confused, and scared for my job, no matter how much I don’t like it.
