New WFH Strucuture will be announced at SETH

Wanted to provide an update based on what was discussed in an executive meeting this week, given some of the questions that have been circulating.

Beginning in 2027 there may be one or two modest adjustments to headcount. These would be targeted and limited in scope rather than another broad reduction. Any changes would follow the usual planning and review process and would be communicated through leaders and the normal channels. Nothing is being finalized at this stage.

Separately, we are introducing a self directed team hybrid structure. Teams will have more flexibility to determine their own in office days based on the nature of the work and what the team needs to deliver. The baseline will be a minimum of three days in the office for most roles, with two days for IT so those teams can stay aligned with ENGINE. Individual teams will work through the details locally rather than having a single calendar applied across the company.

This approach is built on the FlexYes model that has been in place in the ABU Australian business unit. That experience showed that giving teams more ownership of their schedule can still support collaboration and delivery when there are clear minimums in place.

Further details will be shared with leaders as planning continues. In the meantime please continue working with your supervisor on current schedules and expectations.
Thank you.

You Are 31% Less Likely To Get Promoted Because of Proximity Biasness by Management

Source: https://drjustinbateh.com/in-the-media/

You're 31% less likely to get promoted.

Your output has nothing to do with it.

Fully remote workers get promoted 31 percent less often.

Hybrid workers keep pace with everyone in the office.

Nine ways proximity bias shows up before anyone calls it that:

1/ Task assignments go to whoever's visible
→ New work lands on people nearby, by habit
→ Not on whoever's actually best suited
→ Visibility substitutes for evaluation

2/ Casual hallway trust becomes career currency
→ Quick chats build familiarity fast
→ Familiarity gets mistaken for competence
→ Remote work simply can't produce as many of them

3/ Managers forget who isn't in the room
→ Nearly half admit forgetting remote workers exist
→ Not maliciously, just by default
→ Out of sight quietly becomes out of the plan

4/ Layoffs cut the people they know least
→ Decisions get easier without a face attached
→ Remote workers are 35 percent more likely to be cut
→ Distance makes the hard call feel less personal

5/ Executives openly reward showing up
→ Favorable assignments go to in-office effort
→ Raises and promotions follow the same pattern
→ Location becomes a hidden line item in the decision

6/ Mentorship happens where the mentor already is
→ Advice flows to whoever's easiest to reach
→ Remote workers get less of it by default
→ Growth compounds unevenly for reasons unrelated to skill

7/ Calibration meetings run on memory, not data
→ The names people can picture get discussed first
→ The ones they can't, get discussed last, if at all
→ Memory favors whoever occupies physical space

8/ Hybrid workers dodge the penalty entirely
→ Same flexibility, none of the promotion gap
→ The problem isn't remote work itself
→ It's being fully absent from the room where it counts

9/ Visibility becomes something you have to engineer
→ Waiting for fairness doesn't close the gap
→ Documenting wins and showing up where decisions happen does
→ The bias doesn't disappear, but it can be out-worked

Proximity bias doesn't ask if your work was good. It just asks if anyone happened to see it.

Why do I feel like this is

Just the beginning of Groundhog Day for us all?! This is the daily grind personified.
I just think after 6 years of ft wfh and then hybrid this is going to be a really difficult slope to scale after a couple of months with no let us except an errant holiday or vacation day?
What were they thinking?!!
I’m exhausted just thinking about how tedious this gets and how arduous it is after a long day.
It doesn’t help and it’s not political because gas dollar for dollar was higher under Carter obamma and even joe much higher but it’s painful at the pump. The average on today’s dollar would be between $5-6 on average.

What happened to quality of life?

I was watching TV, and saw a workplace where people showed up to an office where they had their own desk, in some cases an office, where they interacted with their team in the physical world, where in person meetings were the norm, and where the job was tactile and real. What happened to that? Is what we get paid enough to give up basic expectations for work? Is the standard now just showing up for work at a stand up/sit down hot desk just to jump on meetings on teams with no real human interaction? When did something mundane on TV like "the Office" become a fantasy? I realize the traders at Helios might not care, but since my bonus isn't in the high six figures I want something more.

Why does CFS get away with only two days in office?

Does Sammy Sun not believe that CFS needs to “collaborate” as much as CUSA?

What happened to “One Canon”, “Transform as One”, “Lead as One”, “Grow as One”, etc….Whatever regurgitated slogans they come up with the word one in it.

This company is filled with hypocrisy and incompetency. They should make CFS come in to Burlington on Thursdays & Fridays. Simple fix.

But oh no, boo hoo, they don’t want to make them come in on Fridays. Or maybe, Wednesdays are to be designated as the big pow wow day for CFS & CUSA to get together to sing “Kumbaya, My Lord” around the campfire and do the Limbo Rock?

Whether it’s Google, office consolidations, pricing…this company botches everything.

Hybrid work

Hybrid work should be evaluated on outcomes and deliverables, not solely on days in office or commute distance. If managers are meeting their commitments and supporting their teams effectively, a 2-day in-office cadence can be reasonable under current policy. Where concerns exist, they’re best addressed through documented feedback via HR or leadership channels, rather than informal assumptions. Let’s keep the focus on accountability and results for everyone, at every level.

Management chain all lives 2.5 hours away from office?

Anyone else on a “hybrid” team where their entire management chains lives 2.5 hours or more from the office? my management chain is cheating the company- they dont like commuting so they show up around 10am, leave at 2pm, and barely do anything. how is this allowed? when will HR fire people like this? my director joins meetings from recreational events and encourages us all to cheat Verizon. basically if we dont tell on him- he wont tell on us. somewhat new to the company and the behavior of leaders here is atrocious. my AD is similar. he always takes off friday

walk out

What would happen if everyone just walked out on the day they started the return to the office and refused to go back till they put things back to hybrid or remote? I mean, if everyone left, they would have to negotiate with us... Cause I don't think they can fire everyone. Like, even if some of the other offices walked out in solidarity?

I know this is a fever dream, but they would be so sc--wed if everyone organized and pushed back on this.

How many offices are still open

Besides basking ridge and hidden ridge, how many people still have offices to report to for GNT? So sub markets still have hub offices? I think it’s ridiculous those that live near office have to go in 3 days week and some people are fully remote (same teams//same roles)

What's larger: -23% or +76%

Need a bit of math help here - What's larger: -23% or +76%?

For example, if one company grew in value about 76% and the other grew negative 23% in value, who grew more? To make it a bit easier, you chose some fixed time fame and let's keep it in the industry, so let's make tmobile be 76 and att be -23...

Finally, once I understand what's larger, I'd like to see which factors cause numbers to differ. For example, if tmobile has a hybrid WFH system, and att is having all employees come be in the office all the time, would someone analyzing the numbers difference, be able to establish some kind of correlation here.

thank you!

Oh this is going to be very bad for the Fidelity brand.

Nothing and I mean nothing scares ppl investing with any bank more than turmoil and unrest.
They are really pushing for massive layoffs done by silent workers being threatened long insane hours and excessive workloads.
They WANT this to happen. Jump ship get the he-l out let them sink like State Street did.
They deserve their misery gaslighting employees. Reneging on five years of hybrid.
Abby is cooked she’s lost her way they’re going for the big sell out why taking about 25% in the wake.
She wants insane type A hyped up employees or the massively linear Indian and African workers willing to do this workload for Pennie’s on the dollar to escape genocide or sepsis in the streets.
This is tectonic.

Two Faced EJ LinkedIn Post

Amidst the firm forcing HO associates back in 4x per week and removing flexibility for hours in-office, I’m seeing a new LinkedIn marketing push today from those at Edward Jones, targeting FAs. It includes a picture saying “Flexibility + work/life balance”, and the content says the following:

“High-intensity sales roles often demand relentless travel, long hours, and constant availability. It's no surprise that many top performers are seeking more flexibility-without losing meaningful work.
Advisors transitioning from sales value having control over their schedule, fewer reactive cycles, and more time to focus on client relationships-not constant hustle.
If you're looking for a career that gives you space to breathe while still challenging you, this might be the right move.”

I get what they’re going for, but it feels like salt in the wound as a HO associate. But hey, I guess according to DC we should be grateful to have our jobs, right?

Latest WPE Rumors

I hear from multiple sources an announcement will be made end of May, effective after Labor Day. Four days a week in the office if you have an assigned seat. You will have to attest to compliance with the policy. Three non-consecutive days in the office if you reserve your space. True? I guess time will tell. Just passing along some rumors hoping to compare notes with what others are hearing.

Farney is full of Blarney

Many of us who have been around for a minute remember how universally Tipsord wasn’t liked. Dude had the bedside manner of Dr House.

But many us held out hope that Farney would take us back to the old State Farm. The one Ed led. Farney is trying to make some legacy of AI and bad faith. With RICO charges pending in Oklahoma, a Congressional DOJ investigation led by Senator Hawley, and the botched California handling - how is our company worth what it is? You can’t get promoted unless you drink the kool-aid and now they expect if you live within 180 miles of the HUBs you can commute. The new hybrid is trash but dang imagine living in Tucson AZ and having to commute to Phoenix

Benefit Changes next year

Hope everyone is ready. VP here from LEGACY (not Heritage) TSYS... benefits will be changing next year. Expect changes with time off packages, 401K match, hybrid work (full RTO), and substantial increase in Healthcare costs. You heard it here first.

This company is a total mess. Precisely why I am included in the next RIF in July.

Personally they kind of waived this mandate to FT RTO

By being 6 years into this.
Some were hired as hybrid, and yes I know a company can change their business model whenever they want, but it also breeds bad faith and discontent. Many people were hired as hybrid or having spent 6 yrs wfh have built up an at home office. This maneuver shows zero respect for employees this late in the game.
And I think if/when another situation arises it may not work so well by the powers that be making these life altering decisions.
I sure hope they are sympathetic to employees if they need to be working from home if their kids are sick, on school vacation, doctor appts that don’t lend themselves to driving in and back twice there MUST be some flexibility. Seems to me all “US” companies like the visa payroll better and we’re about to see the ugliest side of globalization we’ve ever experienced coupled with the AI job ki-ling revolution

Good times. 🥵

Burned out and done pretending this makes sense

I’m exhausted. The commute, the cost, five days in a seat for work that still happens on a laptop and on calls with people who aren’t even here.

Let’s stop pretending this is improving anything. It’s not driving better results, it’s just draining people. Then leadership turns around and wonders why effort drops.

People aren’t checking out for no reason. They’re burned out from a system that makes zero sense.

This isn’t better for employees, and it’s not better for the company.

Roll it back to hybrid and start measuring output instead of presence.
