Fewer middle managers with small teams

🔗 Read more: https://on.wsj.com/3UvDBja

The most-endangered species in corporate America today might be the manager overseeing a tiny team.

The latest broadside against small-team bosses comes from Uber. The ride-sharing giant said it would reduce the number of “micro-teams”—those with only one or two direct reports—by nearly half.

The move is part of a broader plan to cut 10% of its staff, about 3,300 people. Ultimately, the company will have 20% fewer managers, a spokesman said.

The cuts highlight a larger shift afoot: CEOs want managers overseeing bigger groups, with fewer layers between individual workers and executives at the top of companies. Many employers now expect managers to do less coordinating between departments, and to spend more time in the trenches building products or generating revenue themselves.

For the supervisors still standing, that often means doing a job that is bigger, and more complicated, than ever. Workers, meanwhile, say it can often be tough to get time with bosses overseeing evermore people.

Watching the burdens on bosses grow, many junior employees say they have no interest in pursuing the management track.

Layoffs have started!

There have been small groups of layoffs trying to run “under the radar” that have begun at USI. I don’t really see the point of letting people with meager salaries go and keeping execs who literally do nothing and cutting them could actually result in substantial savings. Just giving everyone a warning!

Piper Aircraft Achieves Decade of No Layoffs

Piper Aircraft has successfully avoided layoffs for ten years, a significant turnaround from its past. The company now focuses on retaining its 1,500 employees. It offers incentives to ensure staff loyalty. This marks a period of stability for the Florida-based manufacturer. The firm is the largest employer in Indian River County.

Phone Upgrades

I normally like to keep up with the latest phone because I like technology but hesitant to upgrade because I don’t want to be locked into a contract with an employer who wants me to quit or wants to fire me.

My plan is already ridiculously priced even at employee discount. Can’t imagine being locked into paying full price to an organization that just fired me.

I think will be switching to another carrier soon or going to an MVNO. I hate eSIM by the way.

Lawsuit

I honestly find it hilarious when I see and hear coworkers talking about lawsuits and how “someone, somewhere” is going to do it. Basically, someone else, not them. They don’t have the cojones to stand up themselves; they need someone else to step up first.

The problem is, no one will. Dell can blow away any talk of lawsuits with enough coin and a stack of NDAs.

We’re all sc--wed. Nobody seems to have a real set of big, masculine te------s, we’ve all been neutered, myself included. We’ll just keep taking it up the dirt track with no lubrication and pretending it'll get better or we'll get a healthy severance.

Pay peanuts, get peanuts

You can’t continually increase targets to levels that are perceived as unachievable, while putting commission behind a 45% attainment threshold, and expect motivation and performance to remain unchanged. At some point, if the majority of people are effectively working for basic salary, the company shouldn’t be surprised when it gets basic-salary effort.

How many times have you been laid off in your career?

I'm at three now. Each one felt like the end of the world at the time. And each one taught me the same lesson, that you're just a number to them. No matter how hard you work, no matter how much you give, they'll cut you if it fits the spreadsheet. Sad but true.

DXC has a load of cash $2billion

Total mismanagement at the top, they have all this money in the bank and they are doing nothing with it. Total Cash: $1.96 billion = Total Cash Per Share: $12.25
Why aren't they paying employees? Why aren't they repaying $1.5billion of debt? They don't know how to run a business

I don't know what we all did wrong to make the executives hate us so much.

When is the next lockout? As company profits and executive compensation soars the workers just keep getting squeezed

Help!!! When is Saint Louis going away??

I was moved under a new director earlier this year and she acts like a narcissistic bulldog that has had too much coffee. Constantly yelling on calls and on the floor, making people feel stupid, and challenging all sorts of work things that don't impact her group, and just an bad vibe all around. always loud and angry.

I'm looking for jobs elsewhere but its not easy, and I doubt HR would do anything if I Iogged a complaint (other than get me laid off next, trying to avoid that as much as I hate working here).

Hoping that Saint Louis no longer being a hub gets me reporting up to someone else soon but nothing has happened since the announcement last year. Anyone hear anything recently on the folding up of ops in saint louis??

Sr Managers in non-hub still here

I know of a few sr managers who are still here, in non-hub locations, while others have already either received their notices or been displaced. Portland, OR is one of them. Corporate Risk/FCRM. Is it preferential treatment? Exception made? How can someone Sr be spared while others are already gone?

10% of staff to be laid off

Uber Technologies will lay off about 3,300 employees, or 10% of staff, in its largest cuts since the COVID-19 pandemic, to better navigate the ‌rise of robotaxis encroaching on its ride-hailing business.

I'm being pushed out

I can't say I'm being laid off, but I'm definitely being pushed out. The workload is impossible and the support is nonexistent so the stress is suffocating. They're not showing me the door but they're making me want to walk through it myself. And I know I'm not the only one feeling this way.

Employee Perks

As if our benefits in the US aren’t insulting enough, I just learned about the perks given to India.

Samsung discounts
Relocation assistance
Day care
Apartments and hotels
Salary accounts
Percentage of home loans waived
Restaurant discounts
Meal cards
Interest on their direct deposit at 6.60%

Meanwhile, in the US, we get measly discount to a museum.

Garbage company.

DXC's share of healthcare cost

Does anyone know how much DXC contributes towards an employee's health insurance - medical/dental/vision? Just a ballpark number.

It doesn't sound like they contribute 80/20 or 70/30 that some of the better performing companies do. I haven't used DXC's plan bcoz my spouse has a good one but was wondering if I had to use what would my cost vs DXC's be; I'm definitely saving DXC some money there right now.

If you work at IBM, understand this: you are a target

The moment you make more than your coworkers, you're on the radar. Seniority doesn't protect you, it does the opposite, it makes you more expensive and more vulnerable. I've seen it happen to people who dedicated years to this company. They were paid for their experience, and that's exactly what made them a target.

Cornerstone Building Brands to Shut Ohio Plant

Cornerstone Building Brands will close its Walbridge facility in December. This closure will result in the layoff of 104 employees. The company cited evolving market and business conditions for the decision. Alternatives were evaluated, but the closure was deemed unavoidable. Employees have been notified of the impending layoffs.

WPSU Staff Face Job Cuts Amid Ownership Change

Penn State has announced layoffs affecting 31 full-time employees at WPSU as the public broadcasting station transitions to new ownership. Many of these employees are anticipated to transfer to the acquiring entity, with some already receiving job offers. This development follows the Penn State Board of Trustees' approval of the sale of WPSU to WHYY in October 2025. The station's transfer is currently undergoing review by the Federal Communications Commission, which includes a public comment period. University officials anticipate the acquisition to be finalized by mid-September, with contract extensions available if FCC approval is delayed.
