The moment you make more than your coworkers, you're on the radar. Seniority doesn't protect you, it does the opposite, it makes you more expensive and more vulnerable. I've seen it happen to people who dedicated years to this company. They were paid for their experience, and that's exactly what made them a target.

@OP That's why the jobs are sent to India, Philippines, Costa Rica. Everywhere it's cheaper. My last account all system administrators were RA'd no US support all from India

There is another reason, after a reorg or a layoff, clueless bosses will parachute into a team. Instead of learning, they will start pushing for nonsense. The senior ppl that know the product and the customers, will try to educate them, as as result , they will be labeled as negative, bad team players, legacy thinking , etc. So they will be pushed out (often by ostracize them, making them to quit). Besides money , the only thing that IBM appreciates greatly are yes men.
If you work at IBM, you're a fly in a urinal.
@OP, in Albany there’s a pretty obvious inner circle that seems to get most of the promotions and leadership opportunities. Everyone knows who they are, and somehow they always seem to be protected no matter what happens.
IBM is where mediocrity prevails. Alvind is the leader.
