Unlike many now jobless, I’m close enough to retirement that this isn’t as bad. I do feel for everyone else and hope the bad times won’t last long, and that more jobs will soon be out there. We all knew IBM was doomed to fail sooner or later, and that they’d be coming for us in large numbers. I wish there had been more strategic thinking and stronger leadership, but it is what it is. To those who remain - stay alert and work on your future outside IBM.

There’s been talk, from a source I trust, that leadership has been exploring workforce reductions. The numbers being floated include cuts of 15% up to roughly a quarter (25%) of staff under each director across most departments. The focus appears to be aggressive cost savings, and part of that includes looking at compensation levels and where employees are in their career timelines. Officially, they can’t say that’s a factor, but it’s being quietly discussed.
What’s even more concerning is that some highly skilled employees are being targeted not because of performance, but because they don’t fit in with their immediate manager’s preferences, push back against the status quo, or are seen as difficult simply for having a different perspective. If someone isn’t aligned with their leader or is viewed as inconvenient when numbers need to be met, they become an easy choice.
It’s incredibly hard on the people who consistently show up, do exceptional work, and still go unrecognized especially when they’re not being supported or advocated for by leadership. This year feels different. The impact will be left on the shoulders of the people that are left behind, overwhelmed, burning out, and losing their sense of pride in the workplace. But with cost cutting being seen as 'essential' to the business, this is the direction things seem to be heading.

International Business Machines is cutting thousands of jobs this quarter, the latest company to shed workers as it seeks to reposition its business in the age of artificial intelligence.
The tech company said the layoffs will affect a low single-digit percentage of its total workforce. IBM employed about 270,000 globally as of the end of 2024. The company didn’t further clarify how many people it would cut.
“IBM’s workforce strategy is driven by having the right people with the right skills to do the work our clients need,” a spokesman said. “We routinely review our workforce through this lens and at times rebalance accordingly.”
IBM joins a growing list of companies shedding workers, propelled by a shift in C-suite offices toward using AI tools and pushing for efficiency among rank-and-file employees.
Amazon.com announced layoffs last week that affected roughly 14,000 roles. United Parcel Service recently said it had reduced its management workforce by about 14,000 positions over the past 22 months, and Target recently shed 1,800 corporate roles.
Large employers have been making deep cuts to white-collar jobs, with many executives preaching a leaner approach to their businesses.
At Big Tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft, cuts have come at the same time the companies have poured billions into building out data centers and other AI infrastructure. Many companies are embracing AI, hoping that it can handle more of the work that some well-compensated white-collar workers have been doing while making others more productive.
Investors have also pushed chief executives to operate more efficiently with fewer employees.
Based in Armonk, N.Y., IBM is trying to position itself as a leader in building the world’s first viable quantum computer. It is competing with Google, Microsoft and a number of startups to build computers that exceed the abilities of the best conventional ones. It is working on larger clusters of quantum chips that it expects will enable large-scale computing in the next five years.
Chief Executive Arvind Krishna recently said IBM has used AI, specifically AI agents, to replace the work of a couple of hundred human-resources workers. That has enabled it to hire more programmers and salespeople, he added.
In October, IBM posted higher revenue in the third quarter, boosted by higher-than-expected growth in its consulting business. IBM has had other cuts since 2024 that affected marketing, communications and other teams.

American Airlines is cutting a small number of management and support jobs, mostly at its Fort Worth headquarters. AA says it's adjusting its workforce to match current needs.
Job cuts in October hit 153,074 - up 183% from September and 175% from last year. Highest October since 2003.
Tech sector cut 33,281 jobs, nearly 6 times September's number, due to AI changes.
Total for 2025: 1.1 million cuts, up 65% from 2024. Worst year since 2009.

If you are looking for people to lay off, look at representatives with higher than normal charge backs. They obviously don't sell with integrity or to a customers need. These are the people pushing customers to leave in droves because of useless overselling. Just costs the company money and dilutes customer happiness in all.

It’s pretty clear that there is a direct correlation between the company turning its self around and the non viable employees being thrown over the rails.
That there is a direct correlation between the stock price and the continued turning of the ships heading.

Worse October for layoffs since 2003. Layoff levels reaching 2008 levels. It's time we start recognizing the fact that AI is impacting jobs. You may think AI can't take your job, but it doesn't matter if you are right, because c-suite thinks it can. Perception is reality, and this is our new reality.
Maybe they eat crow in a year or two, but right now, it's hard to ignore the cold hard truth: AI is leading to job loss.

Saks Off 5th, the off-price retailer within Saks Global, will close nine of its 79 locations beginning in January, WWD has learned.
Saks Off 5th is also vacating its 57th Street location in Manhattan, located in an office tower at 125 East 57th Street near Lexington Avenue, as previously reported. The property was sold to a new owner, who plans to create residences on the site, meaning there will be construction disrupting business at the store. One source said that due to the impending construction, which is seen occurring over at least two years, Saks Off 5th decided to vacate the space. It’s not clear whether other factors were involved in the decision. However, the store will continue to be open for business through the holiday season.
Asked if there will be more Saks Off 5th closings beyond the 10, the company indicated in a statement, “Through the regular course of business, we continually evaluate store performance and, from time to time, may determine it necessary to reformat or close a store.”
However, while closing certain Off 5th stores, Saks Global said that it is making some investments in better-performing Off 5th stores. “We have been piloting new initiatives, including initiating capital enhancements in certain stores, elevating our selling model and enhancing our in-store assortment. We look forward to extending our learnings across our top locations,” the company indicated in its statement.
The nine Saks Off 5th closing next year are on State Street in Chicago, and in Austin; East Hanover, N.J.; Philadelphia Mills, Pa.; Niagara Falls, N.Y.; Pittsburgh North, Pa.; Plymouth Meeting, Pa.; Washington, DC, and West Hartford, Conn.
Saks Off 5th is providing for those impacted by the closings with transfer opportunities to nearby Saks Off 5th locations where possible, and eligible full-time colleagues will be offered separation packages consistent with the company’s severance plan.
As part of a management shakeup at Saks Global disclosed last month, Kim Miller, who was president of Saks Off 5th, shifted to chief customer officer, a new corporate position. Genny Siller, who was vice president of merchandise planning at Saks Off 5th, became senior vice president and general manager of Saks Off 5th, reporting to Marc Metrick, chief executive officer of Saks Global. These and other management changes at Saks Global were triggered by the departure of Emily Essner, who was president and chief commercial officer.

Curious….has anyone who received an ISP found a job yet? This market is brutal and I feel like I’ve been blacklisted. Since early September I’ve only had one real interview and three “networking” calls. I actually had a recruiter say ‘they (Edward Jones) doesn’t do product development like everyone else’. I’m beginning to freak out with November 14th being next week.
