Use this time wisely

I understand people are stressed, but it is still better to have a few weeks to prepare for layoffs than to be completely surprised when you least expect it. Update your resume, start networking, and get a feel for the job market. Do not get stuck in a waiting pattern when there are things you can do to help yourself, even if only a little bit.

I got my sanity back after being laid off

They cut me in November. I admit, at the time, it felt personal. Looking back several months later, it was the best thing that could have happened. For the last at least five years there, the environment was toxic. The peer group I started with was gone, replaced by contractors and offshore teams. Every re-org meant new faces and new anxieties. I was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. Now that I am out, I can see clearly how much it was affecting my sleep and my mood. My advice to any American applicant is to proceed with extreme caution. The culture is broken.

New Avaya story

Hi all, I ran a second story on the lawsuit and arbitration process. Information is still very scant, but a source at Avaya alleges that it discovered a C1 document called “The Great Migration.”

If you have any insights, email me at janderson@industrydive.com

Advice

If you're likely to get laid off, just cut back to the minimum that you have to do. No need to put in the effort!

Exit plan bonus secured advice needed

Planning for exit: bonus secured. I have been secretly building business on side that has me financially where I want it to be. Now the planning which items should I take care of or be sure I take advantage of before I leave. Insurance wise I will take care of any benefits since I will be getting my own insurance such as annuals , dental work( not much) using my rewards I think I have some gift cards I can cash with points, wrap up any Ed Assist dues for the certification I am getting , help a friend here add to the list

Transformation and CO - Get out ASAP

Trim Ryan posted about it. Others have mentioned it. If your role is even remotely tagged to Transformation and/or CO - find a new job asap. You WILL get Rif'd. It's not a question of if but a question of when. Save yourselves the mental agony of getting access cut off in a matter of less than an hour. The ignominy....get out. LIterally...to anywhere else.

Best piece of advice that I can give. Do yourself and your mental health a favor - don't wait till the last minute.

2025 STI 401k contribution

I had set up a 6% 401k contribution on my bonus payout to get the full company match. However, the 2025 STI payout paycheck doesn't have any 401k deduction. Therefore, I am guessing there won't be a company match. Anyone else seeing this? I have reached out to HR via email for clarification.

Strategy and Trust - Advice for new hires

The real issue isn’t just layoffs, it’s trust.

When cuts happen and communication feels vague, people lose confidence fast. Add tighter return-to-office rules on top of that, and it can feel like control is going up while security is going down.

WFH flexibility isn’t just a perk. It’s a signal. It says: “We trust you to deliver.” Being super prescriptive with attendance dashboards and badge monitoring sends the opposite message.

If leadership wants to retain the best talent, they must listen actively to the needs of the incoming generations who are screaming to balance their life needs better then previous generations. It comes down to a few basics:

  • Be clear about what’s happening and why
  • Be consistent between words and actions
  • Trust people to do their jobs
  • Push the flexibility policy more and stand behind it

Layoffs test culture. Culture eats all strategy (even the best ones designed by DW). Flexibility and transparency are how this company will succeed or fail. It’s too late for me because I made my decision so I leave this for the new hires coming in to witness.

Your move, DW

I'm back one year later from March 2025 layoff

I was the author of the maybe layoffs thread last year where everyone mentioned that I was trolling. https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1jmakfz6x

I was impacted, but in good spirits now since it took me a couple of months to find another role. I am giving my perspective and guidance to those who maybe affected next month.

If something feels off start applying immediately to other jobs, that is what help me achieve a faster turnaround in this job market. Those who got poor performance reviews out of nowhere with little to no warning helped me understand that except for family, no one is to be trusted.

When you are in the call with HR remain calm say that you will look over the severance package and leave. You'll have a few days to sign it with a clear head. Always have your keys, wallet, phone, and other with you at all time.

If applicable look at your state unemployment laws for additional income, but do watch how much taxes are withheld.

If you get a job offer, take it then keep applying for other roles or better yet apply internally once in so you get a job that matches your skill set. I REPEAT TAKE IT!

Get your medical checkups now! FSA used it.

You will get a message from old teammates about your status, but this is not a checkup. It is a check to see where you end up and some will be jealous to hear where you end up.

Trust your gut.

SM time off guidance!

"Discretionary Time Off Guidance" by SM confirms the 200 hour cap on "time off" aka combined sick and vacation time. Unfortunately, this cap is in direct violation of the unlimited vacation and sick time policies of L3H and the US federal employment laws regarding compensation for time off. Any attorneys reading this who are interested in a class action lawsuit against L3H for current and former employees?

Let's celebrate the lawsuit in the spirit of EWeek - Transform Your Future

Unsolicited Advice...To Elevance Health

If this company truly wants to grow its market, it must take a hard look at the people directors leading its teams. These leaders have a direct and measurable impact on team performance. Ignoring this level of leadership has not produced meaningful gains so far, and it will not do so in the future. You have leaders that do not show up for work or for their teams. Why would any company pay leaders not to show up? It would serve the company well to undertake the necessary, perhaps uncomfortable, work to address this now, unless the intention is to continue falling short with full awareness of the cause.

And to be clear, this post is not intended to solicit responses from people directors who may feel personally offended by this perspective. The focus should remain on results, accountability, and the long-term success of the organization, not on individual sensitivities.

PSA - PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT from someone who has "been there, done that" recently:

Change your 401k automatic payroll deduction to 0 ASAP!

If you got laid off, cash is king, don't worry about retirement at this moment - changing to 0 will increase your paychecks for the non-working notice period. If you think you might be laid off or know you are going to be in next round, keep this tip in mind. FYI - if you lose access, you can still get this info via Total Comp Online.

Benefits - Make all medical, dental, eye doctor appointments and refill all prescriptions ASAP. I called my doctor to tell them I was laid off and they called in extra refills for me. Anything you have been putting off, get done now. I had a couple procedures I'd been postponing due to work.

If you have the Vision insurance, it starts fresh every January - it does not matter if you got new glasses in December. I got new sunglasses I desperately needed and my kid got a new pair of regular glasses.

There are a lot of emotions that come with this, so stay strong and I believe we will all end up better off from this down the road. Peace.

If you’re laid off, start your own company!

I’m sorry to hear about all the layoffs people are experiencing. My advice is that because your experience is valuable, especially you folks who have been working here for 10, 20, 30 years, you should either A) Start your own company (for behavioral health, etc) or B) Do consulting on your own terms.

It’s obvious people with incredible resumes are being let go. It’s time we take our careers back and invest into something we’re truly passionate about.

Wishing you all the best!

Best space for FIS Breaking News is here

So many have been generous in sharing what is happening for them and on their teams in real time. It's gut wrenching to watch. Please take good care of yourselves. If still in the office, get contact info or create text chains for your workgroup to stay in touch. If laid off, don't sign anything until you have a chance to review it. Check your local laws regarding length of time to do so. If appropriate, have an attorney review it. Resist any pressure to sign without those options. If you are impacted, as mentioned elsewhere, it's not your fault, you did not fail. Everyone was failed, right from the top.

Layoff Advice

Was picked and off payroll in 2 weeks. I didn’t find the PDF they sent very informative. Can anyone who’s been thru the process advise on best practices? What should I look to sign first, what should I handle first? What are some big don'ts ? Thanks in advance for positive assistance.
