the root cause of Nike's problems

I think one of Nike’s biggest problems is that we’ve been so dominant for so long that we became too self serving. At some point, we stopped listening enough to what’s happening outside of Beaverton. We became too confident that we knew the consumer and that what worked for us before would continue to work.

Meanwhile, a lot of other brands were actually listening. They were closer to consumers, closer to culture, and quicker to understand how the market was changing. Especially with Gen Z and now Gen Alpha, the way people discover brands, connect with products, and decide what to buy has changed dramatically. I don’t think we changed fast enough with them.

And now we’re trying to fix it, but we’re already playing catch-up.

I think that’s partly a Nike problem, but I also think it’s an EH problem. When he came back, there was a real opportunity to challenge how we operate and change the way we think. But a lot of what I’ve seen feels like we’re trying to bring back the same Nike playbook that worked a few years ago. There’s nothing wrong with going back to some of our strengths, but the world we’re operating in today isn’t the same world.

There’s also an irony to Nike being an American company. Being American was a huge part of why Nike became what it became. American sports, athletes, and pop culture had enormous influence around the world. But I think that can also be one of our weaknesses today because we still tend to look at the world through a very US centric lens.

The world doesn’t work that way anymore. People aren’t only looking up to the US to tell them what’s cool or what’s next. Sport, fahsion and culture are coming from everywhere now and sometimes I feel like there is so much happening out there that we’re simply missing because we’re too busy talking to ourselves.

That’s the part that worries me the most. I don’t think the answer is just to get Nike back to what it used to be. We need to keep what made Nike special, but also become much better at listening again. We need to get outside of Beaverton, be closer to what’s actually happening in the world, and let the world influence us as much as we want to influence the world.

But I’m also afraid this isn’t something that will change overnight. And honestly, I’m not even sure it will change at all unless there is enough pain to force real change.

That’s probably the hardest part. Big organizations don’t fundamentally change just because people know they should. They change when the cost of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing.

And when you’ve been successful for this long, there are a lot of people in senior positions who grew up in the existing system and benefited from it. Asking them to think differently isn’t just asking them to change how they work. In some cases, you’re asking them to question the structure, the roles, and even the way their own value has been defined for years.

That’s why I’m not sure the people sitting in those high chairs will naturally want to step outside of their comfort zone. Because real transformation could also mean changing their own role, reducing their influence, or even questioning whether some of those roles need to exist in the same way anymore. That’s a very difficult thing for any leader to voluntarily do.

So maybe Nike needs to feel significantly more pain before we see the level of change that’s actually required. I hope that’s not the case, but I worry that small fixes, reorganizations, and bringing back pieces of the old playbook won’t be enough.

Because the problem isn’t just the playbook. It’s the mindset and the system behind it.

And unless we’re willing to challenge that, we may keep changing things around the edges while protecting the very structure that got us here.

All change, all change in Marketing 👀

Hearing there could be some pretty big changes coming to Marketing. New CMO, consultants looking at the org, and apparently a restructure could be on the table.
Maybe we’ll finally get back to actually doing marketing instead of throwing money at endless brand sponsorships 😂
Buckle up, Marketing folks… this one could get interesting. 🍿

Verizon wireless Internal CS and Tech rebadge?

So there's a solid rumor going around that internal cs and tech will be rebadged to a PSO Vendor. VPs will not confirm or deny this claim, and from a company standpoint this just happened with the stores going to indirect. Seems to me like this can happen as Sprint and AT&T both have done this in the past. This would be wild if it happened.

Why fix what wasn't broken?

There have been so many examples of Nike losing the exact thing that made us good. It always seems to start with decisions that look harmless on their own, then suddenly you're wondering what happened. We have plenty of experience and resources, so watching this happen over and over is pretty frustrating. You'd think we'd eventually learn from it.

Change For The Better

Does anyone else feel like we should bring this 2017 term back again? Previously it was Changing for the Better to emphasize our enhanced risk management and customer service culture. We should now use it to again to say we are keeping those and adding to it an enhanced culture of sales through giving great service advice and guidance.

Thoughts?

"Change is the medium for opportunity."

Today Oracle has released me to meet my future head on with no impediments for this former remote OCI gal. I love a good rollercoaster ride, so here's to looking for, and finding, all the silver linings and rainbows. They shouldn't be too hard to find if I keep my rose colored glasses within reach.

Change is Needed

I have not figured the how as of yet but we really, I mean really, need to figure out some way to convince CMS and our federal government that there is a much better way than to continue using these very large for-profit health insurance conglomerates (e.g., Humana, United, Elevance/Anthem, Cigna, Centene) that are just siphoning off tax payer’s money while providing very little incentive to increase the health of Medicare members but instead just make overly paid executives and shareholders wealthier.

We also need to convince CMS that those same corporations are doing very little to combat fraud, waste, and abuse.

I know that there are some extremely smart people on here that are also not happy with these same corporations as to the way are now doing things. Yes, there may have been a day when you were proud of the work they were doing. But those are days from memory and you will recall those are from half a decade or more since.

I believe the longer things drag out, the ship will not right itself; it will only get worse for the Medicare members and also worse for American citizen employees. Now, is the time to come up with an action plan and begin implementing.

Unfortunately, it would probably be too difficult for us to be able to network and meet up as a large group. So, each person will probably need to smartly come ip with ways to legally and peaceably chip away at these corporations from many different angles to bring them down and/or convince CMS and Federal Government that these large for-profit corporations (e.g., Humana, United, Elevance/Anthem, Cigna, Centene) are NOT the way to go.

New round of Marriott CEC layoffs. Presented as "Growing Forward"

In a series of last minute team meetings members of Marriott Customer Engagement Centers teams , Office of Consumer Affairs, Case Resolution Team, and Social Media were told their entire team is being eliminated. In the openings remarks of the meeting the Sr. Executive leading the meeting referred to Marriott's 2026 "Growing Forward" initiative. A complete insult to the intelligence, dedication, hard work, of the Customer Engagement Centers "best of the best". Options to apply for new roles under the restructured organization were discussed. The job openings will be opened to the public. There will be fewer openings than the positions being eliminated. All roles for these teams will officially end on November 23, 2026.

Remove Geographical Location from Email

Saw on Fuel that geographical information will be removed from Email names. I think this is a precursor to the Town hall coming.

There will be a relaxation of office mandates and more people will be moving back to remote work as previously announced by Takis.

Removing the Geographical location will prevent others from knowing where someone works from just by their email tag.

Exelon Org Changes

Billions in profits but they need more, will likely be significantly cutting regional Op-Co jobs over the next three weeks touting streamlining and AI as the solution. To continue unlimited growth for their shareholders out of their monopoly over customers
