On February 15, ExxonMobil announced that the company's Huizhou Daya Bay R&D Center officially started construction in the Huizhou Daya Bay Petrochemical Park.
The Daya Bay R&D Center is ExxonMobil's second R&D center in China after the Shanghai R&D Center. The new Daya Bay R&D Center will focus on R&D activities in the fields of novel chemistry, process development and process scale-up. The center is ExxonMobil's first comprehensive R&D center equipped with pilot equipment outside the North American headquarters. It integrates product R&D and process development. It is planned to be constructed in two phases, and the first phase is scheduled to be opened in 2025.
"The construction of the Daya Bay R&D Center will further meet the growing market and technology needs in the Asia-Pacific region," said Wan Lifan, chairman of ExxonMobil (China) Investment Co., Ltd., and the R&D center will bring dozens of high-level R&D jobs , to introduce high-level chemical talents for the local area, and further strengthen international technical exchanges and cooperation. ExxonMobil has established a good strategic partnership with Guangdong Province, which will provide strong support for Guangdong to build a world-class green petrochemical industrial cluster.
ExxonMobil stated that the company has safely completed the hoisting of large heavy equipment for the Huizhou ethylene project. At present, the construction of the main factory area of the first phase project is progressing smoothly, and the supporting projects and the main factory area are advancing as planned. The start of the Daya Bay R&D Center is another important milestone since the start of construction in 2020.
The ExxonMobil Huizhou Ethylene Project is the first major petrochemical project wholly-owned by an American company in China, with a total investment of over US$10 billion, and will be constructed in two phases. The first phase of the project will build a 1.6 million tons/year ethylene cracking unit, as well as mid-downstream high-end polyethylene, polypropylene and other production equipment and supporting facilities. The production of various high-end chemical products will help reduce the import of high-performance polymers in the Chinese market rely.
ExxonMobil said the Huizhou project will produce chemicals used in packaging, automotive, industrial and consumer goods, and hygiene and personal care products. The project adopts industry-leading technology to improve energy efficiency, which is in line with the development direction of China's national petrochemical industry and will help reduce the Chinese market's dependence on imports of high-performance polymers.

Anyone here if Regional Construction are going to be laying off specialists? Just heard today that starting in September, CMO will be doing all Admin tasks (Construction Activation, As-Built, FIR, Etc.) on all Residential jobs (SDU/MDU) and Specialist will be doing all admin tasks for Commercial jobs. Concerning as we have many people that are 100% Resi and now if they do 0 admin work what are they going to be doing or needed for?
When is phase 2? More lay offs? More desks?

Why do I see contractors doing osp and construction work that should be going to inhouse
Financing for build-to-rent projects has halted nationwide. This is due to a federal housing bill moving through Congress. Hancock Builders, a Phoenix developer, has seven projects under construction. Founder Greg Hancock stated the entire industry is shut down. Hancock Builders may lay off workers if new projects cannot secure financing.

The Tendit Group LLC, a Denver construction company, will shut down. This closure will result in 143 employee layoffs. The company cited financial struggles and an inability to turn a profit. It’s a valid point that when/if construction begins that we lose more spots.
It’s starting to feel like the garage is not happening. Like they’ll just keep the status quo. Dark thought, but if enough people are let go, then it’ll just go back to 2023 where parking is tight but mostly manageable.
I don’t mean to be a Speculating Steve, but it’s now been almost a full year since the initial announcement. And with each passing date, it feels more and more like the garage is never actually happening.
Oil is going up again, and that hits way more than gas. It drives up the cost of literally everything tied to construction. Steel, concrete, transportation, labor, all of it gets more expensive fast. It’s not crazy to see 25-50% increases when energy spikes.
And we’re in the middle of committing billions at peak pricing to a new HQ… right as commercial real estate is weakening and companies everywhere are cutting office space.
That’s the part that’s hard to ignore. This isn’t just a bad look, it’s bad timing. You’re locking into a massive, fixed-cost project while the market is moving the other way and the cost to build it is actively rising. (Again)
We could easily be talking about hundreds of millions more than originally expected just because of where energy and inflation are heading.
We’ve seen this pattern before. Big bets. Late timing. Expensive outcomes. Yet another blunder… It’s beyond being bad luck. This is an ongoing pattern of failure.
The London Home Builders’ Association warns of significant job losses. Over 60 percent of its members laid off staff last year. Further layoffs are expected in the next six months. The London construction sector lost approximately 5,800 jobs since September. The association urges government action to prevent further economic damage.

Seven Wisconsin companies filed layoff notices in January, affecting 366 workers. The state's unemployment rate remained low at 3.1%. Economists observed a general slowdown in hiring activity. Retirements are a major factor contributing to the labor force decline. Manufacturing jobs decreased, but the construction sector saw an increase.

Is it true that construction is the next big hit coming? Heard it was???? Anyone have any news or rumors?
Do y’all realize how many announcements Apple, Google, and gang have made about new campuses then the start date for construction gets pushed for this or that reason? Do you know how many permits it takes to knock down huge existing office buildings and the time it will take to pull up massive parking lots and roadways? Just thinking about the number of dump truck runs needed is mind boggling.
This is just big talk to make the news and try to garnish a stock price “buy” recommendation. A new CEO will be named in the next few years and will squash this whole idea, lease a few buildings and call it a day!
Barely 3 years ago, will history repeat itself for CE1? Hmm

Hoskinson Contracting and Hoskinson Concrete gave walking papers to a combined 123 employees this week, and an official with one firm said the concrete company will close permanently.
The number of workers laid off is significant, according to state officials, and beyond normal seasonal fluctuations in the construction industry.

What is going on for construction over at BAT? Teams are moving there on Monday yet half of the building is still closed. Can someone shed some light on what is ACTUALLY going on?
Not sure why they are cramming everyone into a building that isn’t finished, yet departments at the AUR building were told to WFH for the next 3 weeks.

Is it true due budget cutting?
Just confirmed that this time RIF spreads to Ukraine, Romania, India, Mexico development centers and remote workers. Utilities haven’t had layoffs in engineering for past 10 years. I heard second wave is possible.
