The difference after leaving is unbelievable

My biggest regret is how long I stayed somewhere that made me feel like I was constantly doing something wrong. My new job pays better and I have actual freedom to do my work without someone picking apart my every expression or move. The constant intimidation is gone, and I didn't realize how much it was affecting me until I got away from it. Sometimes leaving really is the answer.

Excited to commute 2 hrs on Monday

I have a 2 hour round trip to Dallas HQ that I do everyday. I am looking forward to my commute on Monday morning. In the morning it gives me a chance to plan my day. And in the evening I get the opportunity to reflect on my day while driving home. I am too tired to do anything once I am home so I have no trouble falling asleep on time. I love working here. Thank you JS and RTO.

America's Best Employers for Tech Workers (2026) - Forbes

https://www.forbes.com/lists/best-employers-for-tech-workers/

SAS (#1 and #2 in the Great Place to Work survey a few years ago) didn't make the top 300 this year. Maybe the layoffs and uncertainty about the company's future are dragging it down.

This place feels completely different

I don't know exactly when things changed, but IBM feels nothing like it used to. People are exhausted, nobody has much enthusiasm anymore, nobody seems interested in anything, and the old sense that everyone was in it together is gone. We used to actually enjoy seeing each other and working together. Now everyone's just trying to get through the day. I miss the old IBM.

I’m actually kind of ticked off.

I don’t get this ft rto for some but not for all its arbitrary and unfair
So bc our area has the space we get to slog into Boston with our costly commute while other areas that likely cost less to commute get to wfh?!?
How does that build collaboration knowing some of your colleagues sets up a phone meeting just as you would like to leave for your commute all the while they’re sitting on their 🫏 at home with NO COMMUTE?!!!
How is THAT not a hostile work environment?!?
Yea I’m po’d

Rockefeller would have been proud

They (executives) truly believe you can run an oil refinery from the other side of the world using third rate talent.

Apparently the billions in profit were just not quite enough.

We no longer promote employees because they are hard working or knowledgeable in their fields. We only want compliant employees who will parrot whatever the latest acronym of the day.

Rockefeller would have been proud.

Well said, @az+1m29w550n

Benefits are Gone

Xerox used to be a desirable place to work, decent pay, and great benefits. However, after decades of stale salaries they are basically paying minimum wage. If you take a look at the benefits, health insurance used to be worth something, but not it's just too expensive to use if you can even afford the premiums at all. They took our guaranteed vacation days away so now they are only as good as your manager that approves them. And now I hear that the tuition reimbursement program is suspended. Is there really any reason to stay?

My wife is leaving me...

She says it's because I don't give her enough attention but she doesn't understand core Cisco principles, and that contributing to increased collaboration in the office & increasing shareholder value is my life's purpose.

I asked Circuit if it can help me but produced no helpful results.

I have too much responsibility in the company, I cannot afford to start any later than 8am and finish any later than 6:30pm, that and being on call every weekend, which I cannot miss out on as the company depends on me.

What is the solution to this P1 incident?

What I learned as a Christian person in Cummins

Cummins keeps pushing this whole diversity-and-mental-health thing, the "let's all sit around the hot tub, hold hands and make sure everyone's feeling good" vibe.

But is that actually true? Is the culture really as "inclusive" as they claim? Every manager ending every meeting with the company's favorite buzzword—"Cummins values"—sure makes it sound that way.

The reality is a different story. As a white, Christian, straight guy, I get the short end of the stick constantly. Go ahead and apply for internal openings all you want—nobody's listening. They'll pass you over for someone with way less experience, sometimes none at all.

In any technical discussion, no matter how much evidence I bring to the table, management sides with the women in the room every time. My director actually told me, "You're right 99% of the time, but you're going to hurt her feelings and she'll get emotional." So the company shelled out $500k to a law firm just to confirm what I'd already proven for free.

Working here is flat-out he-l for me. The problem is I can't afford to walk away, and job-hunting in this economy is brutal.

As a God-fearing Christian, I used to dread the day I'd have to face my Maker. But four years at this company taught me something—and it's honestly the one good thing I've gotten out of it: I'm not scared of that day anymore. Turns out he-l on earth is real, and Judgment Day will feel like a relief by comparison. Funny enough, I heard Elon Musk say almost the same thing recently. Didn't realize he worked at Cummins too.

Some orgs under John Saw are also instructing employees to do 5 days RTO with WFH option only when necessary

Abdul's (now Joh Saw's) org was 5 days RTO for managers/directors as soon as the place was reopened with WFH as an exception (e.g., we've got a 3am install occurring...) and you had to have the mandated jab.
Funny that JUST NOW the rest of the org is being mandated RTO.

@ay, leadership know that some people are just badge swiping. There will be surveillance enhancements to know who is leaving the office building and when. Facial recognition, transition from using the badge to device for building access, who knows what's coming. But what is clear is their stance on WFH has changed.

It's about time. There are way too many employees taking advantage of "Working" from Home....aka Costco runs, babysitting, mowing the lawn, playing golf, watching TV, sleeping, and who knows what else!
Time to get back to the office where the above activities will be harder to pull off. This company needs every employee fully engaged and doing the work they are being paid to do. The stock is way off and shareholders deserve better. The Covid era party has lasted way too long, and is finally coming to an end.

@qt I guess you’re more productive while talking around a break room drinking coffee instead, or physically attending pointless weekly meetings about updates that you already put in 2 or 3 slide presentations the previous day. You must really have no life if you prefer to be trapped in an office 5 days a week for this nonsense.

Sounds like what you are really wanting is freedom and the ability to call your own shots. That's called financial independence or retirement. Until then...you are an employee where they pay you to do, what they tell you to do. Save your money my friend and invest well. Cheers!

@1yd Sadly, I’m probably closer to your age than you think but I’ve evolved to recognize work life balance and not be a sheep. I’m not talking about hard work, I’m talking about office politics. By all means do your job well. That said; We’re all entitled to some level of freedom. The days of shutting down from work off hours is over for most people with technology. In the very least, you should be allowed to work remotely a good portion of your time.
Ironic that you signed off with “cheers.” Perhaps you should consider the European philosophy to work instead of being pretentious.

@20w It's so fun to hear you business types moan about working after hours. Try being on an engineering or tech team where you routinely are up from Midnight to 3am doing an install that may or may not go well, due to dependence on developers in Mumbai or Hyderabad.

It’s not just about a badge swipe. It’s going to be hourly laptop pings confirming connection to the LAN to see how long you stay in the office, along with geofencing your phone. This is truly insidious work. Trust me. I’m the one creating the report.

@265 they are not geofencing phones. I pay for my phone and service. Nowhere in the T&Cs does it state this for employees. If this was proven to be occurring, the company could get majorly fined. Company issued laptops are a different story. Your personal phones and service that you pay for - not happening.

I have been retired a couple years. All I know is Costco, pickleball courts, coffee shops, Home Depot and everything else you can imagine have a lot more under 60 people at them, during normal weekday working hours. Before Covid, when I would take a vacation day during the week....most places were a ghost town. Not the case anymore. Either everyone is retired all a sudden, or something else is going on. I think you can do the math from here. This isn't just a T-Mobile thing either. Publicly traded companies that answer to shareholders are course correcting. And....AI is more than happy to do your job too.

Return-to-office (RTO) trends in 2026 are defined by tighter enforcement of hybrid models and a shift away from flexible, ad-hoc schedules toward mandatory 3-to-5 day in-office requirements. Despite worker reluctance, many major employers are utilizing badge-swipe tracking and expanding disciplinary action to ensure compliance.
Key RTO Trends Rise of the 4-to-5 Day Mandate: The standard 2-3 day hybrid model is evolving. Around 30% of organizations now require a full 5-day in-office week, while four-day requirements are steadily increasing.
The Era of "The Great Compliance": Unlike the past few years where return mandates led to massive pushback, a tightening job market has caused the percentage of workers willing to quit over RTO to drop to roughly 7%.
Stricter Badge-Swipe Tracking: Companies are actively using digital surveillance—such as badge-swipe data and location logins—rather than relying on trust to enforce required minimum office days.
Sector-Specific Stringency: The push is particularly aggressive in finance and tech. For example, prominent institutions like UBS have restricted remaining junior banker flexibilities, demanding 5-day attendance.
Disconnection & Morale Issues: Although compliance is up, continuous enforcement alongside organizational layoffs has contributed to a growing disconnect between executives prioritizing physical presence and employees valuing flexibility.

@2bp okay. Be honest. If TMO really wants to implement back to office. They better make sure f..ing people scanning and going back. These Directors and VP knows who they are and not taking any action. This is 2 sets of standards. Get this f.. fix first and then ask other to RTO.

@2pn Pull what report. Person who comes, scan the badge and go will be always 3 days in the report. So what is the rule? scan and go or be in the office. My manager is next to me and I can’t scan and go. But, I see other team member does that.

@2r2 No longer just about badge scans. Time actually in the office will be captured to show how long the computer is active and on the office network each day. I'm sure some people will try to just park there computer on campus and leave. That behavior be sniffed out quickly.

@2rw I hope you are right, but I have not seen that in reality. Every month we are told by our manager that how many days each are in the office. NOT how long they are there. This is very frustrating for people who is actually in the office and other they CHEAT the system all the time. This needs to STOP now or other be flexible.

The internal fighting that T-Mobile has created over who when and how long coworkers are in the office is lovely. They don’t need surveillance tools, just jealous tattletales or generally pi---d off peers. Great culture. [hash] we won’t stop

@2tg Rules for thee and not me...has never worked long term. It creates an environment that no one likes and pits people against each other. Eventually either the rules change, or "everyone" is held to the same standard. Time will tell.

Bring it on. I want the lazy a$$es who have been milking the system for way too long, to at least have to pretend to be working 8 hours a day. At the end of the day, this is a management issue. People rise or fall based on what is expected from them.

No regrets on this side

I walked away from Verizon two years ago. The internal dynamics were exhausting, and I couldn't see a path to grow there. From what I read today, those same patterns are still around. My own career took off in a much better direction after I left, so I have no second thoughts.

I've lost all motivation

I don't care about the comapmy
I don't care about kpi's
I don't care about Q2 Q4 goals
I don't care about projects
I don't care about putting in any effort
I've truely given up and skating by

This company has su-ked out my humanity & left me underpaid & overworked
When all you get is a 'thank you'
All I can say is fu-k you

The RTO mandate has created a toxic environment

Being forced into offices that are noisy, inefficient, and uncomfortable has made everybody nervous and short-tempered. Even a small ask can get an over-the-top reaction - and I don't even blame people for being like that. Those who are calling it the "great leap backward" are right.

Working from office, less productive

Anybody noticed that their productivity has gone down since the return to office mandate has been in place?

Me for instance, I have noticed my productivity has gone down while the hours worked and in office have increased. It's quite unmotivating being monitored for being in office for 8 hours, as well as all my activity being monitored. Needless to say I am miserable.

Study finds People who want to work remotely are unsurprisingly actually more productive and happier

  • Study finds remote workers are far happier and more productive
  • Remote workers reported much higher well-being, but were also less likely to leave their role
  • Study also dispels myth that remote workers might feel alienated from co-workers

A survey of 7,704 employees at a large US healthcare organization by researchers at the Leeds School of Business found fully remote workers reported the highest levels of well-being, with those entirely office-based reporting the lowest level.

The findings, published in Frontiers in Psychology, also noted that it was unable to discover significant evidence that remote workers felt any less connected to colleagues or workplace culture, once again disproving the myth against flexible working.

Stay flexible
"This suggests you let people work remotely if they want to work remotely," said Stefanie Johnson, professor of organizational leadership and information analytics at the Leeds School of Business and co-author of the study. "Taking away people's choice of how they work is probably not going to help them in terms of their well-being."

What was the moment you realized the workplace was the problem?

Source: K. Box

Harvard Business Review found that 58% of employees trust a complete stranger more than their own boss.

That sounds wild until you’ve worked for the wrong person.

Then you understand it immediately. A bad boss doesn’t always yell.

Sometimes it’s vague expectations.
Feedback that changes depending on the day.
Credit that disappears before it reaches your name.
Meetings you stop getting invited to.
A paper trail that somehow only includes your mistakes, not the context around them.

Then your behavior starts to change.

You over-explain.
You reread every message.
You stop asking direct questions.
You start keeping receipts because you don’t trust what will be said later.

That’s what broken trust at work does. It doesn’t just make the job harder. It makes you second-guess your own judgment.

And most people don’t leave after one big blowup.

They leave after one more meeting where the story changes.
One more rule that only seems to apply to them.
One more moment where they realize they’re documenting reality instead of doing their job.

At some point, it clicks:

You didn’t fail in that environment.

You were trying to survive it.

Stay away

This place has constant layoffs and poor management. Coworkers are friendly but that's about the only positive thing. Leadership has no accountability, pay is low, raises are ridiculous no matter how long you stay, and work-life balance is non-existent. A cr-ppy company all around.

We are not friends or family.

the minute you stop putting expectations on our one side relationships with a company and realize this is nothing but a transaction. The growth and model and T shaped people and family talk that comes from the C suite is a way for them to get extra work for free. The other thing to watch out for is expanding your role. This is a transaction for time and labor for dollars. That's it at the end of the day we are all expendable numbers on a spreadsheet they use to extract as much value as they can from us as a resource. Protect yourself and your health. Do not stand by and middle is good enough. The threats and fear only work if you give them power and these people hiding in their corporate towers are just that nothing without their perceived power. Presence over performance will bite them on the ar-e.

Start looking for next and remember nothing is permanent.

Godspeed to everyone I hope you have a whats next or an exit planned.
