The best we can do is show up for one another

About a decade ago I was cut together with may dear coleagues - us who were affected found real help from the industry... from networking to resume sharing to landing great next roles... Because there were many good people who stayed inside Target, many of those teammates eventually came back... If you are cut, use your network and move on... If you are not cut, be that network and help... The best we can do is show up for one another.

Laid off and, strangely enough, relieved

It’s a bad feeling, and it definitely shakes you up. Yet I mostly just feel relieved. I didn’t like the job, and I certainly didn’t like the company or its ways. I’d already started looking into other options a while ago, hoping something better might come along. Now there’s an opportunity on the table. Nothing certain yet, but it looks promising. It may or may not work out, so wish me luck. Maybe this layoff will actually turn into something good.

SO… LAYOFFS hit Tuesday. HR says my final day is HALLOWEEN. 🎃 That’s right — my job literally ghosted me.

Now I need a COSTUME that fits the VIBE: something between “Corporate Casual” and “Emotional Damage.” Otherwise, I need a costume that says “spooky, broke, and still pretending to care.” 👻🎯

Ideas so far:
• 404: Job Not Found
• Spirit Halloween Employee
• A Target logo bleeding out
• “Ghost of Corporate Past”
• Red shirt + name tag: “Ex-Targeted Employee”
• A walking Clearance Tag

It’s Friday, I’m still here, but mentally I’ve clocked out! 🧠💀 Hit me with your best ideas before I show up in a box labeled SEVERANCE PACKAGE.

Anxious

This is my first time going through a potential layoff, and I’m really struggling with the uncertainty. Ever since we heard the news , I’ve been anxious nonstop — it’s hard to , join calls, or think about much else.

How are you coping or distracting yourself ?

How many of each level 4-9 are there at HQ?

Just curious if anyone has rough numbers on how many people are in each level from 4 to 9 at headquarters. I imagine some pyramids are heavier in 4s than others and so on.

If sources are saying 1000 actual people will be cut plus roughly 800 open roles, and levels 6-8 will be most impacted, how many 6 to 8s are there to even be cut in the first place?

How Many Clinton (Annandale), New Jersey Workers Have Relocated to Houston?

ExxonMobil to close huge N.J. facility as part of consolidation plan

By Sarah F. Griffin | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
ExxonMobil will close a large research facility in Hunterdon County as part of a plan to consolidate its corporate research operations at its Houston headquarters.

Most of the employees at the Exxon Mobil Research and Engineering division will be offered jobs at the new facility in Texas. The Clinton Township campus, along with a research facility in Ontario, Canada, will close as part of the consolidation, which will be done in phases that will continue until 2028, according to a report by Bloomberg.

“We are incredibly disappointed to learn that ExxonMobil has chosen to close this facility over the next few years,” Clinton Township Mayor Brian Mullay said in a statement. “We will work closely with our partners at Hunterdon County Economic Development & Tourism, the NJ Highlands Council and ExxonMobil to ensure that the developable portion of the property continues to contribute to our area’s economic success and that the ecologically critical areas are preserved to protect our environment.”

In October 2022, ExxonMobil informed the township it had partnered with Prologis do a feasibility study that looked at redeveloping a portion of the property as a warehousing complex. The idea met was met with opposition from the community, according to Clinton Township Council meeting minutes.

In September of last year, Joe Wong, a commercial portfolio manager for ExxonMobil, told the township council that the company was not going to expand beyond the 150 acres that make up its current campus. It last underwent an expansion there in 2017.

The facility employs between 500-600 and pays $3.5 million a year in property taxes, Wong said during a presentation before the council.

Don Carpenter, president of Independent Laboratory Employees’ Union - United Steel Workers Local 09009, said the union the decision impacts over 100 of its members who work at the facility.

“As of right now, none of the unionized workers at the site have been offered relocation or continued employment within the company, however the union will be entering into bargaining with ExxonMobil over the effects of this unfortunate decision,” Carpenter said.

ExxonMobil told NJ Advance Media it is “committed to meeting our obligations under the collective bargaining agreement” and expects “to have further dialogue with them on this announcement.”

Sad thing is, we do have people who should be laid off

But we all know none of them will be affected. You all know who I'm talking about. People who barely do anything but are really good at a-s kissing and yes manning. I'm sure every team has at least one of them, and they've been here forever despite contributing the bare minimum. And they'll still be here after this round is done, while some great employees will be gone. Sad but true.

Being Laid Off

I was laid off within the last 2 years. My experience thus far, has been one of immense relief. If you're lucky to have a good cultural pocket at Nike, I envy you. I was unfortunate enough to be in a toxic one for several years, and it weighed on me heavily. Very glad to be out for that reason alone. The job market is sh-t, and I don't have a ton of leads but I have been trying like he-l. And it's really baffling, because everyone on the inside was so friendly with the "we all have each other's back" sport team analogy vibes....except we really didn't.

The lack of any outward communication from 99% of people I used to work with has been validating, disappointing, and consistent with what everyone's saying on this site.

Nike's culture is so phoney baloney in this regard. It's not a good sign for your company's culture when you rave on and on about people's performance on the job (e.g., "this person's a rock star!", "they're so great", etc.), spend time over countless lunch outings, barbecues, and happy hours outside work, have spent years of hearing about each other's personal lives, families, and weekends, only to completely ghost the ones at work you supposedly "care" about now you don't see them anymore.

If you read the above, and scoff at it for being too "naive", or "soft"....you're part of the problem. We all gave/are giving the company so much of our time and mental energy. For what? To treat each other like Nike treats us all? Aren't we better than that? Despite what Mitt Romney once said, corporations aren't people. We can do better than treating each other the way Nike treats us.

To people who reach out - please continue to do so. Your words have been so helpful. To those who don't / haven't reached out....consider your team members who are now in isolation. They could use a familiar face or a check in from time to time.

My Layoff Story…twice

The first time back in Feb of ‘22…the Thursday before Super Bowl weekend. A 15 min invite dropped in my calendar at 7:30 am that Thursday…invite was sent from the Director to meet at 9 am. Was given notice of my Rif and given 30 days to find a new role or leave. Thankfully I found a new role and stayed.

The second time in July of ‘24…had moved to a different role a yr prior at the invitation of a sly director. Same sly director who asked me to join his team the year prior laid me off a year later. “Business update” dropped in my calendar around 9 am for a fifteen minute meeting at 11 am same day. I knew what it was.

But, the second time came with VSP since our group wasn’t eligible to volunteer. So, the second layoff more than doubled the severance offer given on the first layoff.

Found a role to stay, but decided it was time to get of the VZ train. Glad to have found my exit with such a nice payout and was fully employed again within six weeks.

Good luck all. If your number is up, you WILL bounce back! For everyone else, keep riding the gravy train as long as you can, but always have a backup plan.

We trained foreigners to take our jobs!!!

I was laid off a recently despite many years of service.

I know of one other co-worker, also long term employee, that was laid off the same day, but there may have been more.

We have been instructed not to talk to our co-workers.

There are lay offs last year and the year before.

But that may have been because of the 175 million dollar SEC lawsuit.

Basically they have us train a foreign workforce to do our jobs and once they are trained, they get rid of us.

So if you are training people from overseas to "be part of your team", start looking for work.

If you are over 50 read this

I was laid off in Greenwood Village, CO. We did not get the heads up notice, they walked us out like we stole something... no chance was given to look for other internal roles... almost veryone laid off was over 50 so pay attention to this. i heard rumors that other groups affected followed the same pattern. the mgmt told us that they were not looking at age when they were selecting people but i do not buy this statement. anyhow, if you are over 50 be careful and plan for the worse and hope for the best.

Suncor keeps laying people off here and there, no longer makes business sense

Did anyone pay attention to the lay offs recently that have been occurring here and there that has been occurring in Fort McMurray at Syncrude/Suncor site recently?

Like it’s literally gotten business STUPID! To the point where it no longer benefits Suncor’s bottom line to lay someone off. Basically just gonna say it straight up as a true anonymous story… no names or positions identified. But basically people who are clearly planning to retire and have made it known in 3-6 months who worked for 25-30+ years who have disagreements with their higher ups and get an awesome package. (Even though they are retiring in 6 months). Even though Suncor could have had these peoples work and experience and only have to pay for 3-6 months, they would rather immediately lay them off for 2+ years pay. This is how stupid Rich Kruger’s System has become.

Basically my advice to anyone who is retirement eligible? Don’t even retire, never retire, just wait for the package. The recent incentive is instead of retiring with pride, a retirement party, instead just sit back and wait until your higher up gives you a package because basically you get more money. Suncor is incentivizing not retiring. Suncor is incentivizing laying people off. So the way suncor has been doing the layoffs recently is they are incentivizing being laid off.

PS TRUE STORY This happened and IS the route Suncor has gone, pure stupid where the lay off is just a disagreement with your higher up when your boss wants you to fudge numbers . (Again this happened boss wants you to fudge numbers and if you say ethically no I’m not doing it then your higher up lays you off). The higher up has an option to lay you off. (And give you a 2 year package if you were certain years service)

PRO TIP***. So basically my advice to anyone who is retirement age, just wait for the package. Tell your boss off if they ask you to fudge numbers and get a package. If they demand something . Thays where we’re at right now with our Canadian company, our pride in Alberta company… Suncor’s method that has gotten stupid where it no longer makes business sense to lay people off and just costs money.

Also Pro-tip if your boss wants you to fudge numbers, and you don’t want to be laid off, then you basically have to fudge numbers to prevent being laid off so make sure you are ready when you don’t want your boss to lie and fudge information.

ExxonMobil CEO issues stern warning to employees

The energy giant is undergoing a major change.

ExxonMobil has had a problem over the past few months. The oil and gas giant has seen a drastic downturn in energy prices, which has wiped hundreds of millions of dollars off its bottom line.

Year-to-date returns for crude oil:
West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil: -10%.
Brent Crude Oil: -12.4%.

The declines have put ExxonMobil under Wall Street’s microscope, prompting management to make significant changes affecting workers.

The company is restructuring and will lay off 3% to 4% of its employees. While it doesn’t have a return-to-office policy, it plans to close smaller offices to consolidate its footprint, affecting where many remaining employees do their work.

“The changes we’ve announced today will further strengthen our advantages and grow the gap with our competition, helping to keep us in the lead for decades to come,” said CEO Darren Woods in a memo to employees.

ExxonMobil makes drastic changes amid downturn
Woods has been at the helm of ExxonMobil (XOM) since 2017, so he’s seen some tough periods, including the oil-price collapse during Covid.

The company is far from dealing with a Covid-era hit to sales and profit. Still, regulatory shifts provide the perfect rationale for its restructuring, particularly in the European Union.

The passage of the EU’s corporate sustainability due diligence directive last year has drawn sharp criticism from Woods. The law mandates that companies address environmental and human rights problems lurking within supply chains or risk a 5% fine on global sales.

Regulations in the EU are more burdensome than in other parts of the world and drive up costs, making it more difficult to compete.

“The business and regulatory environment in Europe is challenging and this transformation will help us compete into the future,” said ExxonMobil Europe President Philippe Ducom in a statement regarding the changes.

Woods told Reuters in mid-September that Europe’s law could lead U.S. companies to exit the EU. The company had already paused a planned investment of 100 million euros ($117.4 million) before announcing its restructuring.

In Europe, ExxonMobil will close smaller offices and consolidate workers within a new office at its Antwerp refinery in Belgium.

We plan to bring the majority of our office and home-based employees together at or closer to our manufacturing sites in the region (including, for example, in Germany and Italy) and we intend to close a number of smaller offices in the region.

ExxonMobil says 1,200 workers “across the EU and Norway” will be let go by the end of 2027. It labeled 600 of those jobs redundant; a common problem in sprawling multinational companies like ExxonMobil.

The company is also making changes in Canada at Imperial Oil Ltd.

ExxonMobil owns nearly 70% of Imperial Oil, and on Sept. 29 it said it would eliminate 20% of its workers and consolidate many remaining employees outside of Calgary.

Imperial Oil employed roughly 5,100 workers at the end of 2024, and management estimates the move will save more than $150 million annually.

“The changes are designed to fully leverage globally available expertise to maximize the benefits of current technology and accelerate the cost-effective deployment of new technologies,” said Imperial Oil.

Hardly the first change at ExxonMobil under its CEO
The changes will eliminate about 2,000 jobs, representing more than 3% of ExxonMobil’s workforce.

ExxonMobil facts at a glance:
Q2 Sales and Operating Revenue: $79.5 billion, down 12% from nearly $90 billion a year earlier
Q2 Earnings: $7.08 billion, down 23% from $9.24 billion
Q2 Earnings Per Share: $1.64, down 23% from $2.14
Employees: 61,000

These are hardly the first layoffs made by the company or CEO Woods. The workforce was 84,000 in 2010, so the latest changes will mean that about 23,000 jobs have been cut over the past 15 years.

ExxonMobil noted the savings from its most recent actions in its second-quarter earnings release:

Since 2019, the company has delivered $13.5 billion of cumulative Structural Cost Savings, more than all cost savings reported by other [international oil companies] combined. The company expects to deliver $18 billion of cumulative savings through the end of 2030 versus 2019, also exceeding the total targets disclosed by other IOCs.

Those are significant savings, and ExxonMobil isn’t alone. Major international rivals have also announced workforce reductions.

Chevron in February announced plans to lay off as much as 20% of its workforce, while ConocoPhillips in September said it planned to cut 20% to 25% of its workers.

Layoffs are here.

Charlotte and stlouis have had massive layoffs today. at least 20 that i know off. managers, supervisors, directors, associates and analysts. i was laid off and i was an engineer.

for those still employed prepare and try to find something. hopefully the nest egg holds you all through. good luck.

Please post your age and years of service when you were forced out.

I am just curious to see the ages exxon has targeted in the past. I know employees from their 30's to 60's that were piped and forced out. I know several ages 35, 42, 47, 55, 57,58, 62, 64 and 67 years olds. I know none aged 52 to 54 so no NREs. I want to know to expect as I have more than ten years to go.
