B4 tech mgr here, during a recent internal audit, HR department discovered widespread misuse of vacation time across multiple departments, including associates taking unapproved extended leaves, extra days not reporting to workday, overlapping PTO with sick days without documentation, or logging vacation while working remotely on company tasks.
Leadership has officially warned all managers to tighten oversight, and HR is now actively reviewing records with potential disciplinary action (up to termination) for violators. Going forward, every vacation request will be scrutinized, and any past discrepancies could trigger immediate corrective discussions , double-check your own records now and reach out to your manager if anything looks off before they come knocking. Better safe than sorry.

Like may here I was impacted today.
I see the severance calculation which makes sense based on salary and years of service, but I see no mention of my vacation time.
I have a large vacation balance and wanted to know if we see that payment figure anywhere in the portal?
Looking at my severance amount and it looks like they did not include my vacation time?

In Massachusetts, if an employer fails to pay your accrued vacation time when your employment ends, you are entitled to treble damages on the unpaid amount, not just the interest on the late payment. This penalty, known as a treble damages award, is a powerful remedy under the Massachusetts Wage Act. If the employer eventually pays the vacation time late, the employer may have to pay trebled interest on that late payment, but this is separate from the treble damages for the unpaid wages.
What is the Massachusetts Wage Act?
Under the Massachusetts Wage Act, MGL c. 149, § 148, earned and unused vacation time is considered wages.
When an employee is terminated, all final wages, including vacation pay, must be paid on the day of termination.
If an employee resigns, the payment is due by the next regular payday.
I do not believe our crack 1-800 HR people team are following this law for MA employees…
DXC Annual Holiday Shutdown Policy
Are these people having a laugh or what. They wait to tell you, on 1st October, about a new policy that supposedly applies this year to use up your vacation days at Christmas... ...and... even if client commitments mean that you can't do that, you'll be expected to do the equivalent of that within 60 days. All of this is supposedly for your well-being. I'm depressed already.
This'll be on top of the 0% pay rise. Luckily, short term illnesses have been shown to last as long as the number of days they need from you...
On Vacation when notified of layoff
Per policy I submitted my vacation hours prior to starting vacation and also to ensure I wouldn’t have a missing time card (and not get paid).
We couldn’t work from Sep 2 to Sep 22 due to loss of access. But they sure as heck still docked my vacation accrual for the days I pre-entered for post layoff days Arghh.
Kicking myself in the butt.

The Cat's Out of the Bag
During a town hall El Jefe let the cat out of the bag – NCRV is making less money than it is spending so the reduction last week was necessary. He did say he was looking forward with excitement – most likely because he knows there are thousands more that can be cut if necessary!!
Something else that he said was important, he encouraged everyone to go to your doctor appointments and take care of your sick children.
It is what he did not say that is really important here – the fact that they are tracking the number of days in the office and amount of time that you are in the office – so he should have also added that since they are tracking everyone’s time - make sure you are in the office the required number of hours or you will be placed on the next CUT list…
Some friendly advice - to be careful you might want to take a sick day or vacation day when you have to take care of yourself and your family!!
Something else they don’t advertise – you can also take time off without pay. This is useful if you have run out of vacation or sick days and it is obviously not the most desired path but it may just help you keep your job….especially next year when the 5 days / week…8 hours per day requirement kicks in.
My advice is to take your vacation without pay and then save your vacation days for when life happens…I am being sarcastic of course..
To paraphrase El Jefe – if you don’t want to be here 5 days a week 8 hours per day then they don’t want you!! In my opinion that includes just about everyone..

Oracle has unlimited vacation policy on manager discretion. But I noticed managers ensure employee doesn’t take vacations often beyond 2-3 weeks per year. So what happens to those unused vacations on your layoff? Is it wise to take vacations before expected announcements?

I’m on your boat 100%. I’ve gotten exceeds expectation multiple times and finally got BE. My dream here the past year is to get laid off. #vacation The BE served me a benefit in two ways: you either have to lay me off or I’m going to do my job (the bear minimum, never more) and give you a reason and show you what BE is to put me on that last. aka I’m going to do this what are going to do, fire me....
