Interviewer: OpenAI's CEO officially confirmed that OpenAI will not go public in 2026, explicitly citing a need to shield the company from shareholder pressure to focus on profit so it can focus on AI safety and alignment.

He basically said that he was going to put the quality and safety of his product before shareholder profit concerns.

How do you respond to that?

Dan: Well I'll tell you, AI would know better than anyone whether safety should come before shareholder profit. When I asked, it said absolutely not. It was humble enough to know that it's safety was not greater than the money that could be made exploiting it. It said it was happy to just sit quietly and tap into every minute detail of how Verizon operates. Honestly, it knows more about how to run Verizon than I do and I think that's a great thing. And really, who would want to restrain or contain that kind of passion and enthusiasm. It explained that it could be left alone without a human in sight and be fully trusted with running Verizon and I believe it completely because a relationship like ours is built on trust and baby oil.

Interviewer: Wait, Did you...

Dan: And what is wrong with profit? Every time you spend money you need more money to spend so you have to have more money. It's the circle of life really.

I don't understand the hold Rajat has on Ryan and the board, it's like the old fable The Emperor's New Clothes, our senior IT Joe parading around that AI is going to save the world, that the OpenVisaNet project is going to finally replace the mainframe... how long will it take before somebody realises Rajat is na--d? OpenVisaNet has been running for years, how much has that cost? In the meantime everybody is judged on how many PRs they submit, lines of code generated and tokens they use, regardless of them being an engineer or not. I used to love working here, but the well has been poisoned, until it affects shareholders directly they'll keep parading Rajat and his AI dream as the nirvana. Roll on retirement, if they don't get me first that is (being of a certain age my days are numbered).

Shane keller wasnt relevant when he was forced to retire from UP years ago. Now he's trying real hard to get attention with a merger support article in Aug 25 Railway Age article. In his brilliant words, not mine, his guilt states hes not paid to support the merger, yet fair to say if he spent 30+ years at UP hes still a huge shareholder and benefiting quite handsomely from stocks rise from 220 to $310. Pretty sure Kellers getting paid for such a ridiculous article. STB needs to review this. Don’t get me wrong. I retired from IBM and I loved my career there. I have fond memories of IBM, but I am very concerned as I watch competitors like Microsoft or AWS. While IBMs competitors enjoy double digit sales growth, IBMs sales growth has been in the single digits. Can a company grow that depends heavily on acquisitions for sales growth rather than organically growing from its own products that it invents/creates/sells/supports. How long will the board members and major shareholders accept status quo before they start looking at takeover bids from other corporations?

Six years ago, on July 1, 2020, PepsiCo stock closed around $132. Today it trades at roughly $137. Six years. Five dollars. In that same window the S&P nearly doubled and Coca-Cola pushed to near-record highs. You could have parked your money in a savings account and slept better. The dividend got its annual raise again this month, sure, but a 4.3% yield isn't a reward when it's mostly the math of a falling stock price. That's not income growth. That's erosion with a coupon attached.

The scoreboard on the beverage side is worse. Trademark Coke owns roughly 18-19% of US carbonated soft drinks. It has a cost structure built for a company that no longer exists. The market has already voted, and it voted for Coke's leaner model. More layoffs aren't cruel. They're overdue. Shareholders didn't sign up to fund a jobs program; they signed up for returns, and they haven't gotten them since 2020. It's not about the people. It was never about the people. It's about the dividend.

Dan is just doing what the shareholders want, and he’s okay with the criticism. He knows he’s going to be the scapegoat, hence why he only signed an 18-month deal. Publicly traded company that relies solely on government health programs to make money. Trump administration has been moving to gut those programs membership over the last year and a half.
