Fewer middle managers with small teams

🔗 Read more: https://on.wsj.com/3UvDBja

The most-endangered species in corporate America today might be the manager overseeing a tiny team.

The latest broadside against small-team bosses comes from Uber. The ride-sharing giant said it would reduce the number of “micro-teams”—those with only one or two direct reports—by nearly half.

The move is part of a broader plan to cut 10% of its staff, about 3,300 people. Ultimately, the company will have 20% fewer managers, a spokesman said.

The cuts highlight a larger shift afoot: CEOs want managers overseeing bigger groups, with fewer layers between individual workers and executives at the top of companies. Many employers now expect managers to do less coordinating between departments, and to spend more time in the trenches building products or generating revenue themselves.

For the supervisors still standing, that often means doing a job that is bigger, and more complicated, than ever. Workers, meanwhile, say it can often be tough to get time with bosses overseeing evermore people.

Watching the burdens on bosses grow, many junior employees say they have no interest in pursuing the management track.

VATC AI failure

VATC is such a joke, my prediction is Visa will rollback on their layoffs and try to hire back alot of people next year after they realize the tool is a complete failure and waste of time and money and literally has caused incidents to shoot up.

VATC is a such a failure, work that took minutes to do now takes hour or even days because they are shoving this failed tool down peoples throats.

I haven’t spoken to a single person that thought this was going to be a success.

Layoffs have started!

There have been small groups of layoffs trying to run “under the radar” that have begun at USI. I don’t really see the point of letting people with meager salaries go and keeping execs who literally do nothing and cutting them could actually result in substantial savings. Just giving everyone a warning!

IBM annual sales growth for last 10 years

Only at IBM would such horrible and incompetent sales growth results be awarded with $38,000,000 pay plans and hundreds of thousands of IBM shares be given for free as grants.

Meanwhile at NVIDIA:
Revenue: About $44,546,759 per hour.
Net Profit : About $27,633,333 per hour.
Per Second: This equates to roughly $10,484 in revenue and about $6,500 in net profit every single second.

Put your money in a Goldman Sachs CD and get 4.35% vs the pathetic IBM results here.

2025: +7.62% ($67.54 billion total revenue)
2024: +1.44% ($62.75 billion total revenue)
2023: +2.20% ($61.86 billion total revenue)
2022: +5.54% ($60.53 billion total revenue)
2021: +3.94% ($57.35 billion total revenue)
2020: -4.39% ($55.18 billion total revenue)
2019: -27.49% ($57.71 billion total revenue — heavily impacted by portfolio reshaping and divestitures)
2018: +0.57% ($79.59 billion total revenue)
2017: -0.98% ($79.14 billion total revenue)
2016: -2.23% ($79.92 billion total revenue) [1] (https://stockanalysis.com/stocks/ibm/revenue/)

Flock

Judges regularly turn dangerous men loose, but we have to have a nationwide surveillance system and countless data centers? Nah.
So let’s discuss the possibility/ likelihood of Flock layoffs (as the home page of this site says this site is for).
How soon until the ax starts falling?

Job Cuts Hit Four-Year Low

Layoffs across the United States reached their lowest point in four years during August. Employers announced 52,881 job cuts, a significant decrease from the previous year. This trend indicates a resilient job market despite a slowdown in hiring. Consumer products, food, and technology sectors saw the most significant reductions. Restructuring and economic conditions were the primary reasons for these workforce adjustments.

IT Layoffs

When is the next round of IT layoffs? A lot of my team was affected in the last round I have a feeling my turn is coming up. Will it be before the end of the year? In this market most of us are in big trouble if we lose our jobs. It is rough out there

VSP Severance Details for 9/4 separation

For those that have received the Separation Agreement for the VSP with separation date of today, 9/4: It seems like they will not produce an updated severance benefit document ahead of us needing to sign within 45 days. We’ll only have the estimate they produced originally. Does this seem accurate to others?

US adds 162K in August, smashing forecasts yet Dell canning left and right

Obviously things are good in the US with this many hires last month yet Dell is in another major canning spree...

We continue to do great numbers too quarter after quarter. Makes no sense other than MD getting bad advice from JC to cut cut cut.

I highly doubt either of them know whats actually happening in the trenches.

H1 FY 2028

If, globally, most sales reps fail to hit their quota, will Dell still increase targets again in H1 FY28?

If the majority of us are missing targets because expectations are unrealistic, what justification is there for increasing them further?

Could this “manufactured failure” ultimately be used as justification to reduce the workforce?

And with severance potentially being lower than in previous years when calculated against the new payout structure, it feels like we’re all being played here.

MI soon will crash into wall

Did you heard that company is very surprised by token cost due cursor usage ?
Now they will cut it off, while leaving lots of “engineers” incapable of writing code sitting on their as--s because they can’t do anything meaningful by themselves.
People who are capable already left or leaving, it will be hilarious seeing MI crashing in few next months.
Good luck Emma, you gonna needed it :-)

Inside scoop thought of sharing: Greed has no bound

Inside scoop: Heard some concrete info from a very solid internal source about the roadmap for backfills. If you're a manager in the US, Canada, Germany, India, or France, you already know how brutal it is to replace departures right now. Managers are being forced to provide double and triple justifications just to get a basic backfill approved, and even then, finance is pushing to have them relocated. The funniest part? Management has officially panicked themselves into believing India is "too expensive" now. Yes, you read that right. The old corporate golden child is suddenly a margin liability because of high Bangalore wage inflation which now makes it not a low cost hub anymore. So while the West and even get starved out through natural attrition, Egypt is the new favorite child. They have about 450 people in Cairo now, completely insulated from the layoffs, and corporate is quietly funneling the core software and EDA tooling work over there because the currency devaluation makes it a fraction of the cash burn. If you're waiting on a local backfill approval in the US, Germany, Canada, France, anymore in Western Europe or even India—don't hold your breath.

California WARN notice

251 permanent layoffs at PayPal’s San Jose headquarters, filed with California employment regulators this week.
The WARN notice is advance notice: the 251 San Jose layoffs are scheduled to take effect Oct. 30, 2026, per the filing made this week. California’s WARN law requires 60 days’ notice before separation, so those employees are still on payroll until then.

Re orgs mean cuts

I have said this before, watch for reorgs they are the precursor to RIFs. If you end up moving to OCI your time is short. They will cut reshuffle and bleed. Sorry to the OAL org today. Other orgs moving under the grim reaper watch out!!!

Stay strong time to organize, embrace unions! The white collar is the new blue!

WF doesn't give AF if you work hard

My friend got laid-off on Tuesday. Worked 12 hour days, managed her team in several parts of the country, always got an exceeds. Rarely took time off. Single mom with 3 little girls in school. Don't waste your time climbing corporate the ladder, spend time with your family, take your PTO.

Is Chris Koster cashing out… or just cashing in?

According to Centene’s public filings, Secretary and General Counsel Christopher Koster sold:

• Aug. 18: 47,603 shares — ~$3.11M
• Aug. 26: 56,500 shares — ~$3.78M

That’s roughly $6.89 million in eight days.

Source: https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/CNC/insider-transactions/

And nope, not a duplicate. Second trip to the serving line. This guy is hungry.

Centene’s 2026 proxy also reports roughly $16.4 million in total compensation from 2023–2025.

Does this mean Koster is leaving? No idea. There’s no public filing saying that. Maybe it’s routine diversification. Maybe he wants a yacht. Maybe his financial adviser just discovered the SELL button.

But after layoffs, outsourcing, leadership changes, and Mission Simplify Mission Sellify, the timing is at least worth noticing.

The filings are public. The transactions are real. The motive is unknown.

Chris, if there’s a third plate, NoCenteam will be watching the buffet.

Don't worry so much

I was let go roughly six months ago. I thought it would be devastating, but instead, I felt like I could finally breathe again. Now I have a new job that's, if nothing else, ten times less stressful. It turned out okay for me, it will for you as well.

The main culprit

As a long standing employee, I pinpointed the exact time and reason why we started going down hill and the main culprit was Dan Schulmann. Rather than using the post Covid high to become a fully fledged online bank competing with likes of JP Morgan Chase and Citi , he chased mirage acquisitions like Honey and Pinterest. Alex Chriss came and realized the mistake a bit late. Now it's too late. We would most likely be acquired by a bank we could have been.

China Qingdao Site: We Found Out After the Paper Towels (and Plants) Were Already Gone

Check out this message from Nokia employee in China Qingdao on "All Company" Engage posted on Tuesday (September 1 2026).

"This morning the paper towels were still there. By late morning they were already gone - and not just the paper. The dispensers / paper boxes were taken down as well. Around the same time, people also noticed that the indoor green plants had been removed."

"... Only after that were we told the official story: due to Global cost control, from September 1 paper towels would be cancelled in restrooms and lounge areas, ..."
