Walmart Confirms 1,200 Layoffs as Part of E-Commerce Reorganization
All Work – And Now Play: Thorogood Launches Its Infinity FD Outdoor Collection
Walmart has confirmed the layoffs of more than a thousand workers as part of a previously announced reorganization of its business.
According to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications filed in Arkansas and New Jersey, 1,241 roles at the big-box chain will be eliminated. The company’s headquarters are based in Bentonville, Ark., while the offices for its Jet.com subsidiary are located in Hoboken, N.J.
In an email to FN, Walmart said the job cuts are intended to boost its omnichannel operations. Back in July, it revealed plans to undergo a restructuring of its business in the United States by consolidating divisions and getting rid of some managerial positions.
“As a part of taking those difficult steps, some office associates are affected if they are unable to find a different role with the company,” spokesperson Anne Hatfield said.
The changes come amid Walmart’s ongoing effort to consolidate its brick-and-mortar and e-commerce operations, as well as boost its U.S.-based online business, which recorded a 79% spike in the third quarter. Unlike other retailers, which have grappled with months-long store closures and a decline in consumer discretionary spending, Walmart saw heightened demand during the coronavirus pandemic as panicked shoppers loaded up on household goods and other essentials.
The influx of shoppers has led Walmart to hire by the masses at a time when a record number of jobs are being shed elsewhere. Since March, when the COVID-19 outbreak took hold in the U.S., the company has employed more than 500,000 new associates across its stores and supply chain. It also made plans to hire another 20,000 people for seasonal roles at its e-commerce fulfillment centers ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Northern Nevada military contractor warns of layoffs
Two employers with operations in northern Nevada have filed layoff notices with the state.
Two employers with operations in northern Nevada have filed layoff notices with the state.
DynCorp International, a private American military contractor, said it has not been awarded the new contract supporting the Naval Air Warfighting Development Center in Fallon. As a result, the company said more than 250 employees associated with the NAWDC contract will be laid off by the end of January.
In early January, the U.S. Navy awarded DynCorp International with a contract extension of $21.9 million. The center houses the famous “Top Gun” program. “Employment may end sooner based on direction from our customer the U.S. Navy,” the company said in its Nov. 30, 2020 letter to the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Representatives for DynCorp did not respond Wednesday to a request for comment.
The notices were filed under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which is meant to ensure employees have notice before significant layoffs so they have time to find work elsewhere.
Sodexo, a food service provider, said its 65 employees at the University of Nevada, Reno, were placed on temporary layoff status in March and it will continue that status for more than six months.
“The temporary layoffs may continue through February 2021 based on modifications of the academic calendar resuming,” according to Sodexo’s Nov. 9, 2020 letter to DETR.
A spokesperson for Sodexo told the Review-Journal that “wherever possible,” the company reassigns staff to other open Sodexo sites like grocery stores or warehouses that need extra help.
“We are utilizing a limited number of our University of Nevada, Reno team members to support catering efforts at the school and sporting events. When COVID regulations permit larger numbers of people in gatherings, we anticipate all our team members will be able to return to work,” the spokesperson said.
The layoffs come as new jobless claims for state unemployment benefits held steady last week from the prior week. DETR said on Tuesday that 15,419 new claims had been filed for the Unemployment Insurance and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance programs.

Walmart says for the fourth time during the pandemic it will be giving its 1.5 million U.S. part-time and full-time employees additional cash bonuses for their work.
State officials have agreed to grant $4.4 million in tax abatements. In exchange, Beyond Meat would build a 158,000-square-foot facility in Washoe County.
The COVID-19 pandemic was responsible for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association opting to move NFR to Dallas this year, but the 10-day rodeo will be back in 2021.
MGM Resorts has cashed in on $700 million as the pandemic continues to impede the national gaming and hospitality industries.
The Transportation Department issued a final rule Wednesday covering animals on airlines.
Small businesses in unincorporated Clark County may now apply for up to $30,000 in grant funding, officials announced.
The Greyhound station at the Plaza Hotel in downtown Las Vegas is set to be replaced after being located there for nearly 50 years.
“This is going to bounce back quickly,” said Beacon Economics founder Christopher Thornberg.
Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project drew its fair share of critics, but nevertheless helped transform downtown Las Vegas into a destination.

FROSTBURG — Layoffs were averted for as many as 15 employees at Frostburg State University on Tuesday when union representatives and college administrators were able to reach an agreement to keep the staff members on the payroll.
FSU representatives had announced on Oct. 16 that negotiations with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 239 had broken down and at least 15 employees would be laid off. The university had been seeking payroll reductions in light of a $10 million budget deficit.
FSU is one of six institutions in the University System of Maryland.
“We did not receive the additional funding the Historically Black Universities and Colleges in the University System of Maryland (USM) received and, as such, FSU finds itself in a more precarious financial situation than some of its USM peers,” the October release said.
