This CEO laid off nearly 80% of his staff because they refused to adopt AI fast enough

Eric Vaughan, CEO of enterprise-software powerhouse IgniteTech, was unwavering as he reflected on the most radical decision of his decades-long career. In early 2023, convinced generative AI was an “existential” transformation, Vaughan looked at his team and saw a workforce not fully on board. His ultimate response: He ripped the company down to the studs, replacing nearly 80% of staff within a year, according to headcount figures reviewed by Fortune.

Vote on layoffs at D202 tomorrow

Assuming the school board says yes, a dozen employees of Evanston Township High School will be let go at the end of the current school year, as District 202 copes with rising costs in areas such as health insurance and transportation.

What's the point of going the extra mile?

Look, I'm over fifty and I've seen the cycles here. You bust your gut for years, hit your targets, and then watch rounds of layoffs target the highest pay brackets anyway. It really makes you question why you should pour extra energy into a place that seems to value your cost over your contribution. Frankly, most of us at this stage are protecting our energy and just meeting expectations while we plan. It’s hard to stay motivated with that hanging over you.

GameStop closing hundreds of stores

GameStop is closing hundreds of U.S. stores in early 2026 as part of a cost-cutting strategy to pivot from physical retail to digital and collectibles amid declining sales. CEO Ryan Cohen's $35 billion incentive fuels criticism, with employees facing abrupt layoffs. This reflects broader gaming industry shifts toward online dominance.

Is being a newer hire a layoff risk at Fido?

I’ve been with the company for about nine months and I'm starting to hear a lot of chatter about more upcoming changes. From what I see on here, it seems like the cuts can really depend on your specific business unit or project. I’m trying to figure out if newer team members like me should be more concerned, or if the focus is usually on other roles.

Just an FYI

Raises don’t save you from layoffs. I got a raise a few months before getting laid off and I was certain I was safe because of it. I mean, they gave me a nice raise, that must mean they value me as an employee and will make sure to keep me, right? Wrong. In the end, it didn’t change a thing. Just so you know.

Agencies cut the most by Trump

More than a third of the Agriculture Department’s food inspectors left government last year. Over a quarter of Social Security’s IT management is gone. The Treasury Department is down about 4,000 tax examiners, or about 26 percent.

Don't wait to maybe be laid off

This is the moment to get resumes cleaned up and profiles refreshed. The job market is already crowded, and it is only going to get tougher once more cuts hit. I have started reaching out to old contacts because waiting is risky. It's much better to be prepared now than scramble later.

Ouch

Rockstar Games adopted strict internal measures by firing dozens of employees involved in sharing information about Grand Theft Auto VI. Essas actions occurred after discussions on external channels considered insecure, which included unauthorized people.

New job and severance

I was laid off recently and might be starting a new job pretty soon. I’m worried about whether taking another role so soon could affect my severance. It wasn't much but I still don’t want to accidentally mess something up. I'm just trying to figure out how careful I need to be.

AI-related layoffs at Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs begins laying off staff on Jan. 11 in a broad restructuring that targets investment banking and global markets roles and aims to cut $1.3 billion in operating expenses over three years. The moves reflect a strategic push to redeploy capital into priority businesses and technology, but the scale and timing remain unclear and could reshape hiring, compensation and offshore staffing across the industry.

Anybody else having a cr-ppy weekend?

I can't relax, I can't watch my favorite shows, I can't even play with my kids without getting agitated. We're supposed to be able to rest and recharge our batteries over the weekend, not worry about the layoffs all the time and whether we're about to be jobless. I really hate this place.

Location strategy status 2026

What's the latest on location strategy? They forced hundreds of people to uproot their lives and move to a hub in 2025. Has anyone heard of anyone being let go after they moved? I'm still seeing many people shown as being in non hub locations in workday. Are they scheduled to relocate this year or somehow they got an exception to stay where they are?

Goldman Sachs starts big layoffs, with AI pushing costs higher

Goldman Sachs is set to begin layoffs on January 11 as part of a wider shake-up centered on its investment banking and global markets teams. The cuts are aimed at saving $1.3 billion in operating costs over the next three years, as the bank shifts capital toward its top businesses and technology.

Toxic and selfish leadership in Verizon India

After cutting 20+% FTEs and 50-75% contractors the work remains the same. Management is ok to do the resources cut but no spine in negotiating the deliveries.

On one side we hear reorg and new priorities are not out. On the other side selfish, gutless leaders are just pushing deliveries to save themselves with less resources

Layoffs and Trust

It’s hard to understand how a company with HPE’s scale and portfolio continues to struggle to create momentum, and from the inside it feels less market driven and more internal. Constant restructuring, added complexity from acquisitions, and unclear accountability have worn people down. The recent layoffs were especially difficult because they didn’t feel strictly performance based, many capable, respected employees were impacted while leadership structures stayed largely unchanged, which made the process feel political rather than strategic. That disconnect has hurt morale and trust, and at this point the challenges feel structural, even a strong, proven leader like Rami stepping in as CEO wouldn’t be able to fix this without deeper changes in how decisions are made at the top.

We are paying Abacus to take our jobs!

Gainwell responsibilities are shifting to Abacus and that means Gainwell staff will be reduced to account for the shift is the staffing model change. There was a townhall Thursday where Pinky pretty much told us that some of us will be moving on because the current staffing model will reduce the number of people in the new Abacus model. I mean, if people don't get the clue by that then they deserve to stay and suffer.

VBG Jobs Being Backfilled

The cuts in VBG definitely had to be performance based. I’ve been looking up VBG jobs that have been posted in Jan in various states on Verizon careers website and there are several openings for client executives, senior account manager/account executive roles and the retail smb positions. Some of the cities I selected recently had people riffed in that area/territory last month and now the job is open and there was NOT additional headcount last quarter so the q4 hiring freeze is not the reason the job is open now. essentially they just axed some people to get rid of them and hopefully bring on better talent in Q1. At least that’s how it appears to me, what do you folks think? 🤷‍♂️

I just can't be bothered anymore

Reorgs, layoffs, shuffling people around, ignoring bad management but punishing talent, directionlessness, maintenance/decay mode - all of it has made me completely uninterested in the future of Nike, and definitely in my job. I just can't care anymore. If someone had told me eight years ago when I came on board that this would turn into a "just collect a paycheck" thing, I wouldn't have believed them. It's actually sad.
