Got me thinkin'

Just saw one of the fastest thread takedowns I think I've ever seen. It may have been there a minute or two before I saw it but I was in the middle of responding to it when it disappeared. 😂

I guess it was one of the trolls at T bragging about their new AI something or another that was in the news today.

But it got me to thinking.

What are we doing with our wireless network right now?

I have no idea what we've done recently to improve it.

All I hear about is dark fiber, data centers and free AI training for the nation.

And with T getting two big announcements in two days for their 5G improvements, is Dan's plan to actually let the wireless side kind of fizzle out?

Wireless does seem to be the focus of a lot of the layoffs lately unless I am mistaken.

Fiber Cut by construction crew leads to ground stop and delays at several major airports

A Federal Aviation Administration equipment outage is causing significant flight delays at five major Northeast airports after construction contractors dug up and cut a Verizon cable, the company said in a statement to CNN.

The impacted airports are Newark Liberty International, Teterboro, Philadelphia International, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International.

The Verizon statement said, specifying the telecommunications company was not responsible for the damage.

The outage comes as hundreds of diplomats and world leaders are meeting at the United Nations New York headquarters for the General Assembly beginning Tuesday.

AT&T Internet down in all of Texas - Nice Job Guys

Texas appears to be the hardest-hit state, with a significant number of reports coming from the Dallas area, including Frisco and Grand Prairie. Some users also reported disruptions to AT&T's cellular internet services.

AI tracking IP connectivity?

I’ve heard rumors that they are starting or have started to track how long you are connected to the internal corporate network. Has anyone heard about this? I know they can see badge swipes and internal network connection but is it true they are now monitoring how long you are connected to the internal network?

So many lost hours because our IT dept is not run well

I can't tell you how many hours are lost every day because of faulty network or connection issues. I won't report them anymore because they go into a bottomless pit.
I just sit and stew about it. and if I'm doing that and everyone else is doing the same, think of the thousands of hours down the drain .
Such a waste. But then again, what do you expect from S running the group.

Gov. Josh Shapiro signs executive order placing guardrails on Pa. data centers

This could give Vz a huge leg up in PA.
AI/data center gets built ...needs connectivity ... Verizon sells connectivity ... Verizon has to build/maintain the network ...employees do the work.

For Verizon, potential work includes:

Fiber construction — new fiber routes into data centers.
Dark-fiber connections — lighting existing unused fiber or leasing strands.
Optical transport — installing/maintaining DWDM, ROADM and high-capacity equipment.
Central-office work — installing racks, shelves, power equipment, fiber panels and transport equipment.
Circuit provisioning — turning up high-capacity connections.
Testing — OTDR testing, fiber certification and optical testing.
Maintenance — troubleshooting fiber, optics, power and transmission equipment.
Network upgrades — increasing capacity as data-center traffic grows.
Data-center interconnects — connecting one data center to another over Verizon's network.
Enterprise services — businesses located at or around those facilities need dedicated connectivity.
Verizon has a lot of existing dark fiber in Pennsylvania, that's potentially a huge advantage. Verizon also has existing facilities .

N & T

If Verizon actually rebadges this group, that would be a wild decision 😂

How are you going to hand the keys to your network over to a vendor and expect that to end well?

Dan or any Verizon executives lurking in here might want to take a few notes from what happened to Sprint when Ericsson was running their network. We all saw how that story played out. 😂

But hey… I’m sure outsourcing the people who actually know and maintain the network will really help with that whole “delighting the customer” thing. 🤡📶

Verizon outage caused by vandalism

"Verizon customers across Southern California faced widespread service outages Sunday after vandals targeted and cut multiple fiber lines, leaving residents and emergency networks disconnected across the region."

MORE VZ outage issues TODAY - Aug 10, 2026

https://downdetector.com/status/verizon/

See the rise in the graph starting about 5:30 AM and rising to steady state about 1:30 PM. Not as large as yesterday (approaching 800 reports, so we know it is much larger than that). From the comments at the bottom of the page the areas affected appear to be in CA and CO.

Hmmm. I wonder if this could have been predicted.......

Spectrum and layoffs

To those that understand, please help me understand the spectrum auctions from June.

Verizon Communications: Won 82 licenses for $3.16 billion
T-Mobile: Won 102 licenses for $277.8 million
AT&T: Won 10 licenses for $120.8 million
SpaceX: Won licenses for $8.5 million

If we have to trim $5 billion from the operational budget by the end of 2026 through layoffs, offshoring, AI, etc, what is the purpose of spending $3 billion on 82 licenses when everyone else spent less than a fraction of that?

Did we get better spectrum? Were the others bidding just a few dollars behind us or could we have gotten them for 300 or 400 million?

With everything else is being trimmed down to bare bones, was an investment like this solely to make the company more valuable to a potential buyer because we would have something they would need if they wanted to build out or expand a mobile network?

Telstra using AI to restart equipment to hide faults.

The post below the line of === recently appeared on a Telstra executive's LinkedIn account. It was also covered by the Australian Financial Review in an article by Media, marketing and telecommunications reporter Sam Buckingham Jones.

As a former Telstra Principal Technical Officer with 4 decades of experience in the network maintenance and implementation field, I find this 'restart' approach extremely disturbing. It fixes nothing and may have the potential to interrupt traffic to triple-zero 'emergency' calls. (That is - calls to police, fire & ambulance).

Such interruptions have previously been linked to the death of people.

How many times will Telstra merely restart equipment before actually fixing the real fault ?

If equipment requires repeated restart to clear faults, then the network owner should really be placing more scrutiny on their vendors and demanding a real fix.

Network operators should focus on quality of service, rather than just 'clearing' equipment alarms to improve KPIs. Network alarms are raised for a reason. - To notify of problems.

Fix the faults. - Don't just clear alarms to improve your statistics.

Post from the exec's LinkedIn account:

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?”
Turns out, our network already has🤖🔁🔧

Telstra's SmartFix 🤖 is one of those AI capabilities that’s quietly been working in the background for years to make things better for our customers.

SmartFix uses smart telemetry from across the network 📡 to spot common issues early and, where it can, fix them automatically - sometimes by restarting equipment before a customer even realises there’s a problem.
✅ Fewer faults
⚡ Faster fixes
🙂 Less friction

This is AI doing real work, not demos or hype. And it’s a great example of our Network as a Product strategy in action - using data, software and automation to make the network itself smarter, more adaptive and more valuable 🔧📈.

We’ve been applying AI like this for a long time, embedded deep in how the network operates, with a simple goal:
👉 more reliable connectivity
👉 better experiences
👉 every day

You should not have to worry about the deployment of satellites taking away terrestrial cell site jobs. But.....

Much of management has proven they are clueless, sociopathic and pretty much stupid when it comes to real analysis of what will and will not work when it comes to the network. And for those few that know better, they are spineless and will not speak up to stop the insanity. It would not surprise me for there to be mass layoffs if/when a handful of Elon's satellites get deployed and VZ jumps the g-n firing people with the thinking they will move customers to the satellite system. The facts are that the satellite systems will help the rural areas, and probably have some [more] governmental applications (more spying on our citizens), but high traffic areas will still need ground based cell sites. See the question asked on Google, and the response (bottom line - the pipe is not big enough to serve lots of people at the same time, and too many satellites would be needed to make it work).

Here is the question posted on Google (if you want to ask variations yourself):
How many simultaneous users can be served with 5 mbps download speeds on a single satellite (all beams) using the latest satellite and mobile technology and 100Mhz of bandwidth?

And here is the answer (NOTE the last section):

AI Overview
With 100 MHz} of bandwidth of bandwidth, a single satellite system with the latest 5G and mobile technology can serve between 4,000 and 12,000 active, simultaneous users (depending on the use of spatial beam multiplexing) at a guaranteed 5 Mbps download speed.
The Breakdown
To calculate how many simultaneous connections can be maintained, we must look at the mathematical throughput and spatial reuse of modern Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN).
Spectral Efficiency: The latest 5G New Radio (NR) standards have a high spectral efficiency, delivering roughly (3) to (6\text{ bits}) per second per Hertz.
Total Per-Beam Throughput: For a (100\text{ MHz}) channel (the maximum standard carrier component), a single spot beam yields a peak capacity between (300\text{ Mbps}) and (600\text{ Mbps}).
Active User Allocation: If every user is actively streaming or downloading at exactly (5\text{ Mbps}) without sharing, a single beam can support (60) to (120) continuous, simultaneous users ((300\text{ Mbps} \div 5\text{ Mbps} = 60) users).

Scaling to the Whole Satellite:
Satellites multiply their capacity by reusing the same (100\text{ MHz}) bandwidth across tens or hundreds of spot beams directed at different geographic areas simultaneously (frequency reuse). If a high-throughput Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite utilizes 100 simultaneous beams, it can support between (6,000) and (12,000) simultaneous active users across the globe.

Predict Size & Date of the Next Layoff Round.

Chime in below. Also, I would not be surprised if someone was to set up a prediction market on Kalshi or PolyMarket for things like this. But then, HR or Management would have an upper hand and would always win (just like they do in the real life but that's a separate topic). So, this thread is my prediction market.

Mismanagement

I know exactly what is going on with Cisco? I follow networking companies earnings report and Gartner report. I know exactly where Cisco and other networking companies stand in each networking technology.

Greed is everywhere at top level and hiring is broken with favoring friends and family members in most of the groups.

Many know how to play the corporate game! 60-70% of Directors, managers and VPs do not know how to motivate team and no good vision in their tech domain. There are 20-30% good managers, rest are useless !!

I left the group of old networking technology in my group at Cisco and nepotism. Got a better opportunity to learn a different technology and better pay. I don't have to deal with the incompetent Indian manager any more from my group at Cisco.

My Verizon wireless service is terrible

Can someone give me some idea or insight to how few years ago my service was pretty good in most areas .Now my service it terrible and spotty all over the place .Some areas I used to have no issue now have no or slow service.I mean it’s all over the place all over the country. Is this have anything to do with which unlimited plan I have or is it just our network has taken a total dump. This is no joke a serious question please
