https://www.edhat.com/beyond-local/news/california-toy-giant-mattel-inc-to-lay-off-65-employees-at-headquarters/#
Toy giant Mattel, the maker of Barbie and Hot Wheels, is laying off employees from its El Segundo headquarters, according to a notice to state authorities.
The company is expected to permanently lay off 65 employees from its headquarters located at 333 Continental Blvd in El Segundo, Los Angeles County, according to its official WARN notice.
Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) Act, employers are legally mandated to provide a minimum of 60 days’ notice prior to plant closures, mass layoffs, or major relocations. The notice gives local agencies and staff time to prepare, according to WARN.
Mattel submitted the documentation on March 23, 2025, and it was processed the following day. The layoffs will be effective from May 22, 2026, the WARN filing showed.
This is the second time Mattel has laid off employees from its headquarters within a few months. In January 2026, the company laid off 89 employees, according to WARN filings.
Citing a Mattel spokesperson, a news report by Los Angeles Business Journal said that the layoffs in January were part of its effort to restructure its global brands team.
Most of the impacted employees held senior or executive positions, including significant roles on Barbie, action figures, and games teams, the report added.
In March 2025, Mattel laid off 120 workers from its headquarters, most of whom held positions like manager, director, and vice president, according to a Los Angeles Times report. The job losses were part of the cost-cutting effort as the company focused on maximizing its profits.
Citing Mattel spokesperson Catherine Frymark, the news report said that the company was targeting $200 million in cost savings by 2026.
Earlier layoff notices showed that Mattel reduced 439 employees from its El Segundo headquarters since 2020, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal.

Has anyone heard if this lockout is going to have a negative impact for the company? It seems the topic has been quiet. I’m just wondering if anyone has heard any information on why they locked them out or what their plan moving forward is. It seems to be a lot of employees to replace.

Epic Games is laying off over 1,000 employees. This decision follows a downturn in Fortnite engagement since 2025. The company is spending significantly more than it is making. 04/30 Layoff Cycle Question
Will Optum Advisory be impacted by the 04/30 layoff cycle? Seems like we have dodged many cycles with minimal impact as we are most of the time pure profit, except people who are on the bench, so they are typically the ones cut if OA does have impact. Any insight for 04/30 cycle?

Tech Reorg Thoughts
Thinking the tech reorg will mainly impact global. There’s no tech team in EMEA as all those jobs were transferred to ITC and PTC. GC is running their own tech stack which means they’ll have little to no impact. Converse business was impacted which likely means, their tech will go. That only leaves us with the guys in the global where the bulk of tech sits and APLA.

Are layoffs negatively impacting NKE? Don’t think so.
I know there’s a lot of frustration about the layoffs at Nike Corporate, EHQ Tech, and recently Converse, and I’m hearing there may be another one coming in Tech. Layoffs are always tough on people.
But an honest question after 3000+ roles were eliminated, what major capability actually stopped working or broke? It feels like most operations have continued as before which suggests there was significant organizational bloat that likely needed to be addressed.
Ultimately, growth will only return when the product lineup improves. Not by avoiding layoffs.
Scope of recent layoffs?
I'm hearing of another large wave of layoffs that were announced this week (also confirmed by LinkedIn posts). It looks like it might be hitting BID and maybe the Carlsbad site in particular. Can anyone provide more detail on who was impacted?

Workload
Curious how everyone's workload has been since the cuts. It's been long enough to know the real impact. My team lost just one person, so it's been manageable so far. But I wonder how teams that got cut in half are doing. How bad is it?

AI Innovations, and Consequences; to the U.S. Economy.
Consequences of AI -
AI has (some) innovations, but.
AI will replace (most, not all) computer dependent jobs (that can be) in the future, (easily) in the Millions over time; through automation efficiencies.
AI will take away Tax revenues (from those employees that were replaced) who contribute to consumer spending which will (not if) have a very Negative impact on the U.S. economy.
AI will create (some) high paying jobs, but unless Taxes are Increased on Corporations; and the wealthy; there will (not if) be a Major shortfall in Tax revenue.
The U.S. National debt is (currently) $38.7 Trillion (and rising) per usdebtclock, with $990.0 Billion a year in Interest paid by U.S. taxpayers to outside Investors (U.S. based, Japan; China; etc.) that finance it over time.
Wars are (Always) costly over time (but sometimes necessary to defend U.S. National security), and the U.S. National debt will spike because of it.
These are the facts.
