Sutro Layoffs

Sutro Biopharma, based in South San Francisco, is cutting a third of its workforce in its second round of layoffs this year. The antibody-dr-g conjugate (ADC) biotech had already halved its headcount in March when it deprioritized luveltamab tazevibulin, an experimental treatment for ovarian and lung cancers, as well as a leukemia program.

The latest layoffs follow Ipsen’s decision to exit an $875 million partnership for Sutro’s ROR1-directed ADC, leaving the company to focus on pipeline programs like STRO-004, a Tissue Factor-targeting exatecan ADC expected to enter the clinic later in 2025. Sutro is also advancing two preclinical ADCs, including an integrin beta-6 candidate, with plans to move one into trials by 2027.

CEO Jane Chung, who replaced longtime leader Bill Newell in March, said the restructuring will extend Sutro’s financial runway into mid-2027, supporting early clinical milestones. The company ended June with $205.1 million in cash on hand.

Hazel Health Layoffs

Hazel Health, a San Francisco-based pediatric behavioral health provider, has laid off about 11 percent of its staff. The company partners with schools in nearly 20 states to deliver virtual therapy for students and said the layoffs are part of a restructuring to support long-term growth while integrating AI and automation tools.

The company emphasized that no clinicians were affected by the cuts. Hazel said the move will help it maintain efficient and sustainable care delivery as it continues expanding services for students, families, and schools.

Hazel Health has pursued high-profile partnerships in recent years, including a 2023 deal with Los Angeles County to expand behavioral health services for 1.3 million children and a 2024 partnership with UnitedHealthcare to help cover the cost of school-based mental health programs. The company has also attracted significant investment, raising $51.5 million in 2022 and another $34.5 million earlier in 2025.

Environmental Personnel In San Ramon

We have a few environmental as well as other jobs from our function still here in San Ramon. I know my PDC has already met but I personally have not been given a move date, a new job, a see ya later or anything. My boss left the company a couple of months ago. I am almost afraid to ask the question if they forgot about me. Should I just be silent or say something?

Any Updates On San Ramon

I am on vacation in Barcelona and have not seen anything in my email on the San Ramon update. I keep hearing that we are shutting that office down sooner than later but I cant confirm.

If anyone has an update, I would like to hear it. I am on a special assignment for the next 2 years and have not been given a new job or required reporting date to Houston.

Van Nuys call center downsize happening before end of 3rd quarter?

Van Nuys Office worker reduction happening or is it just a rumor? Commutable employees were relocated at the end of July and now all the other employees are sitting waiting to hear what happens next and be able to move on with their lives. Anyone have news on when this might happen?

More California News

There are a couple of new stories out of California today.

  1. Phillips has settled a wage theft case for ~$12 million. This involves requiring employees to dress out early without being paid, deducting pay for lunches even when the lunches were interrupted or not even started at.
  2. The LA Refinery is “sitting on a lake of oil” from leaks over the years. So who is going to buy this land for redevelopment knowing this? It looks like P66 could have been money ahead by spending the money to make it competitive and continuing to operate it. Now they’re going to be paying for many years to clean it up.

Massive layoff in California upcoming soon?

When a company states that it will expand its footprint in an area with a new facility and consolidate 2 sites (Emeryville and San Diego) into one single research site, then something has to give. It won't be the leadership, but everybody else will be on the chopping block in 18-24 months. It is going to be painful for Novartis folks in California!

LAYOFF DATA BREAKDOWN

For those who have already taken AEOI, EOI, or been laid off, I understand that you receive a list showing some demographic info about those who have left CVX.

I’m curious if that info show the location of the employees. Especially for those who were laid off, I would love to see the breakdown by San Ramon vs. Houston. I am starting to think that San Ramon employees have been unfairly targeted for layoff (so, given similar candidates, the Houston employee is the one selected).
