Can we get severance as lump sum so it doesn't affect unemployment?

This varies by state, but in my state (Ohio) severance pay is deductible income that will reduce unemployment benefits 1:1. Does anyone know if it's possible to negotiate having the severance assigned entirely to the week of separation so that we can begin collecting unemployment right away?

Oregon Job Cuts Ease Following Significant Reductions

Oregon saw more than 14,000 jobs eliminated over two years. Major employers like Intel and Nike contributed to this surge. The rate of job cuts has notably decreased recently. Oregon's unemployment rate has stabilized at 5.2% for almost twelve months. Economists now seek increased hiring to further improve the labor market.

I want to be on the next list

I just can't cope with this job or this place anymore. I'm willing to take a lower-paid job elsewhere, even to risk being unemployed for a couple of months. I know it's a sh-tshow out there, and costs have been going up with no end in sight, but I can barely manage coming in every day. Burnout of the first degree.

Advice for someone experiencing being laid off for the 1st time

Hi everyone, I was impacted in this round of layoffs. I'll spare everyone the s-b story but I was with the company for 15 years, which is almost my entire professional career, and it's my first time in this situation. I'd appreciate any advice

How do I know if my severance package is good? Should I get someone to review it even if it is good, just help me understand what the he-l all of the corporate jargon actually means?

When can I file for unemployment? Yesterday was my last day but that isn't my separation date. When I tried entering it, the unemployment site told me the separation date couldn't be in the future.

Confirmed 10k buyout for carman / mechanical

Just got word from union rep appears they are offering a 10k buyout shortly to entice employees to quit instead of collecting whatever garbage unemployment is available. Sounds like another big wave of layoffs is in the future until the shareholders are satisfied. I encourage everyone to start looking for other employment while you can

Laid off? Next Steps…

First, if you were laid off or soon to be laid off, I’m sorry that it happened to you. Unfortunately it’s a sign of the times.

In 2024 the RIF happened to me, I’d like to offer a few few suggested next steps to guide some of you through this process. This is just one person‘s advice, so take it or leave it at your leisure.

1.) Take some time to process your feelings. You will be hurt and angry and a whole bunch of other feelings that you may think would never happen to you.

2.) write down as many projects and details as you can remember in a notebook. You’ll need this for resumes and interviews later. You’ll also be surprised at how much you tend to forget once you no longer are in the day today rat race.

3.) if you’re eligible, get to know about the unemployment insurance process. Note that you’ll have to make a appearance in person and get approved before they start your benefits. Also, this can only happen after your last day at Nike. Learn the process now and prepare accordingly. Know that unemployment payments are really not gonna amount to much, so don’t count on them helping you cover all of your bills.

3.) your severance will only be taxed around 20%. You think you’ll have hit a windfall, only to end up owing a bunch of taxes next year. Don’t spend it all and make sure to save some for taxes. In fact, if you plan to get another job this year, more than likely, you’ll end up owing taxes next year.

4.) brush up your résumé even if you don’t intend to get a job right away. That act of realigning your professional documentation will help you get your ducks in a row.

5.) start leveraging your network now, ensuring that you have a strong support system, as well as ideas of next roles.

6.) don’t get a job right away. Take some time to de-corporatize yourself and spend time with family and friends. Try not to blow your severance as you’ll be relying on this to help pay bills during the time you’re unemployed.

7.) stop reading this job board, it’s only gonna make you more depressed and angry. If you’ve been laid off, there’s nothing you can do about it…accept the situation and move on (somehow).

Good luck!

BREAKING: Verizon CEO Dan Schulman says US unemployment will hit up to 30% in the next two to five years due to AI.

#POLYMARKET: 📰 🔗 ( LinkedIn ).

🚨 BREAKING: #Verizon CEO Dan Schulman says US unemployment will hit up to 30% in the next two to five years due to AI. Here's why:

Dan Schulman, who took over as #Verizon CEO last October, told the Wall Street Journal that #unemployment at that scale is his genuine forecast — not a warning, a projection.

Currently on Polymarket there's an 82% chance tech #layoffs will be up in 2026 in comparison to 2025 (447,000 layoffs).

He said manual laborers will eventually be replaced by humanoid robots and called on other CEOs to stop hedging and tell employees the truth. A month into his tenure, Schulman backed his words with action: a $20M fund to retrain 13,000 workers whose jobs Verizon expects AI to eliminate. He called it the first corporate fund specifically designed to address AI displacement, and said he intends to push other companies and the public sector to build similar programs.

The macro picture behind Schulman's warning is already taking shape. BCG published a report projecting that 50 to 55 percent of all US jobs will be materially impacted by AI in the coming years, with up to 15 percent wiped out entirely. Snap just laid off 16% of its workforce and cited AI as the reason smaller teams can now do the same work. The pattern is the same across industries: fewer people, faster output, AI as the justification. Most CEOs are framing this as efficiency. Schulman is calling it what it is. #ai #verizon #jobs 🔗 🤖

TN AI CUTS (https://www.tennessean.com/story/money/tech/2026/04/20/tech-layoffs-tennessee-workforce-ai/89610365007)

  • Global tech layoffs have topped 80,000 in the last four months, and Tennessee has been affected despite its push to grow as a tech hub.
  • Nashville workers were caught in major cuts, including Oracle’s 25,000 layoffs in March tied to AI infrastructure investment and Amazon’s 16,000 layoffs in January after earlier reductions.
  • Experts say AI is not only driving workforce reductions but could also put downward pressure on pay for some tech roles.

Georgia Labor Force Sets Records, Some Sectors Cool

Georgia's labor force and total employment reached record highs in February. More than 5.4 million people are now working or actively seeking jobs. The state's unemployment rate sits at 3.6%, which is below the national average. However, overall job numbers dipped slightly for the second consecutive month. This indicates a cooling trend in sectors like construction and retail trade.

U.S. Labor Department Reports Fewer New Unemployment Claims

Applications for U.S. unemployment benefits decreased last week. Initial claims fell by 11,000 to 207,000. This marks the biggest one-week drop since February. The data suggests the labor market is stabilizing with limited layoffs. Continuing claims, however, rose to 1.82 million.

US Jobless Applications Fall

Weekly requests for unemployment aid dropped. The number decreased by 11,000 to 207,000. This figure remains consistent with recent years. The labor market shows a "low-hire, low-fire" trend. High inflation and elevated gas prices persist.

Illinois Economy Shows Weak Job Growth, High Unemployment

Illinois experienced only slight job growth last year. Its unemployment rate remained among the highest nationwide. In January, 319,000 Illinoisans sought work without success. The state added 7,900 jobs from January 2025 to January 2026. This 0.13% increase was below the national average.

AI Workforce Disruption (Future) - The U.S. economic-financial system, the Truth.

Fact's -

The Fed under Chairman Jerome Powell since January 2026 has printed an additional $125.0 Billion in currency to prop-up the U.S. economic-financial system.

Fed money printing over time since 2009 does add to the (current) U.S. National debt of $39.1 Trillion (and rising) with a (current) debt-to-GDP ratio of 124.87% (and rising).

Note - The U.S. taxpayer pays the Interest on the U.S. National debt (each year) to other Investors that finance it (U.S. based, Japan; China; etc.).

Interest paid on the U.S. National debt (just surpassed $1.02 Trillion a year per usdebtclock).

To think that the Unemployment rate approaching 15.0% through AI workforce disruption through 2027 (at least) wouldn't cause (Very significant) damage to the U.S. economy is ludicrous.

It (actually) easily could.

These are the facts.

Quesstion on California EDD unemployment application

When I tried to fill in the form online, there's a question:

Have you received, or do you expect to receive, any of the following payments since your last day of work?
There's an item:
Severance pay: Pay you received from your employer when you were fired or laid off.
And you if you click and select it, you need to provide the Total Amount of $, and From-date and End-date.

What should I input here? If I will get a package amounts to 8 weeks of pay, should I input from 04/10 to 06/05? Does it mean I cannot get any money until after 06/05?

A friend told me just don't select it and start getting the money now. Is it leagl?

Canadian Job Market Sees Weak Hiring, Not Layoffs

Canadian employment experienced minor growth in March 2026, marking the best Labour Force Survey of the year. The national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.7%. Statistics Canada data indicates that weak hiring is the primary issue, not widespread layoffs. The layoff rate in March was 0.6%, comparable to pre-pandemic averages. Average hourly wages increased by 4.7%, but this growth is largely due to shifts in employment composition.

Arizona Jobless Figure Tops US Average

Arizona's job market remains under pressure. The state shed 19,400 jobs over the past year. Its unemployment rate reached 4.5% in January. This figure surpassed the national rate of 4.3%. It is the first time Arizona's rate exceeded the national average in 30 months.

Severance and unemployment

I was laid off last month and received severance. I will also apply for unemployment, and I know that unemployment doesn't start to pay until after the severance # weeks passes. Do I have to show that I'm looking for a job during that severance period, or am I able to take a break for a few weeks before starting my job search? I just want to make sure I can still qualify for unemployment in a few months if I don't start looking for a job right away. I'm in Minnesota if that matters.

pour one out for the homies

today's the official separation date for thousands of us since RIF waves started at the beginning of the year. pour one out. 🥂

and to everyone out there suffering at a job they hate - remind yourself that hundreds of thousands of people are actively looking for work and it is statistically, measurably harder to find a job when you don't have one. your misery is temporary. unemployment is also miserable but with added financial anxiety.

refer people when you can. be kind to applicants. and if you know someone who got laid off today, check on them.

we're gonna be fine probably 🫡

AI is taking our jobs - sooo, billionaires are telling us to be grateful. duly noted.

Aravind Srinivas (CEO, Perplexity) just dropped a blunt take on AI layoffs: most people don’t even like their jobs, so getting replaced by AI might actually be the push they need to build something better.

Speaking alongside rising fears from leaders like Bill McDermott (CEO, ServiceNow), who warns unemployment could surge, Srinivas flips the narrative, arguing AI is unlocking a wave of “mini businesses” powered by tools anyone can learn.

Mark Cuban and Sam Altman agree the shift is real: companies are already cutting roles and doing more with smaller teams. Bottom line: AI isn’t just ki-ling jobs, it’s rewriting the rules, and the people who adapt fastest may end up better off than ever.

Goldman Sachs: Oil Prices to Slow US Job Growth

Goldman Sachs forecasts rising oil prices will impact the US labor market. The bank expects a reduction of 10,000 jobs per month through 2026. This could push the unemployment rate to 4.6% by the third quarter of 2026. Slower hiring, rather than increased layoffs, will be the main driver. Consumer-facing industries, like leisure and hospitality, are most vulnerable.

Shutdown Drives Up U.S. Unemployment Filings

Initial claims for U.S. unemployment benefits increased last week. Economists estimate applications rose to 235,000 for the week ending October 4. This increase is linked to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown. Contractors and federal workers are experiencing temporary layoffs. The shutdown has also delayed official economic data releases.

Arkansas Unemployment Filings Increased

Initial unemployment claims in Arkansas rose last week. The U.S. Department of Labor reported this increase. New jobless claims reached 2,057 for the week ending December 6. This was up from 1,319 claims the prior week. U.S. unemployment claims also increased to 236,000 last week.

Any job is better than unemployment

I know many are tempted to quit with cuts and uncertainty but unless you have something lined up, don't. Even a horrible job that pays the bills is better than unemployment at a time when job market is among the worst it's ever been. Don't make the mistake of putting yourself into an even worse position on an impulse.

Louisiana Initial Jobless Claims Continue Decline

Louisiana recorded 1,232 initial unemployment filings. This data covers the week ending March 14. This figure is 0.6% lower than the previous week. Initial claims were also 19% lower than last year. Continued claims fell to 6,260, a 44% decrease from last year.

US Jobless Claims Fall Amid Economic Pressures

Americans are cutting back on spending due to rising gas prices. Gas prices are approaching $4 a gallon after the Iran war. Economists predict sustained price increases could strain household budgets. Despite these pressures, U.S. unemployment benefit applications decreased last week. New jobless claims fell to 205,000, below expert forecasts.

US Labor Market Cools, Workers Remain in Current Roles

Many workers are now choosing to stay in their current jobs. This trend reflects a slowing job market and reduced worker confidence. The expected quit rate dropped to a decade low of 15.9% in February. Employers also cut 92,000 jobs in February, raising labor market concerns. A low quit rate typically signals slower wage growth and fewer opportunities.

Where Layoffs Are Concentrated in New Jersey

New Jersey employers plan to eliminate over 4,100 jobs by March 16, 2026. Economists at Rutgers University forecast a small employment decline for 2026. The state's unemployment rate is expected to continue rising through 2027. Bristol Myers Squibb will eliminate an additional 247 jobs by late 2026. Other sectors like retail and health services also report significant job reductions.
