How many people laid off by Optum last year have had a health crisis while no longer insured?

UnitedHealth Group’s slogan is: “Helping people live healthier lives.”

I lost my job at Optum in 2025 and remain unemployed. As a result, I also lost my health insurance. I cannot afford COBRA, and I have a serious health condition that is currently going untreated. Each month I am forced to choose between paying rent or paying for heathcare coverage.

Without treatment, my condition will eventually become terminal.

THANK YOU OPTUM FOR NOT CARING!

December Layoff Separation Letter

I know there’s a good bit of you on here that were let go in early December and were sent that BS separation letter to sign. My question is: if we agreed to sign it, that meant we stayed “employed” until March 31st and that would be our last day of employment and can sign up for unemployment on April 1st.

My question is: Since March 31st is our last day of employment, we would receive a final paycheck on April 15th, correct?

  • Goldman Sachs warns that accelerating AI adoption could raise US unemployment, estimating AI caused 5,000 to 10,000 monthly net job losses in highly exposed industries last year and accounted for 7% of planned layoffs in January.

  • Companies across sectors including technology, finance, manufacturing, telecoms, and consumer goods are restructuring to prioritize AI, automation, and digital transformation.

  • Workforce reductions range from hundreds to several thousand roles, with some companies cutting up to one third of staff as they redirect investment toward AI systems, cloud platforms, and efficiency programs.

  • The trend signals a broader shift in corporate strategy, as businesses reallocate capital toward AI driven productivity gains, raising concerns among investors and economists about structural labor market disruption.

Would you prefer to be laid off?

I see some people mention they'd love to be laid off, but I'm certainly not among them. Not when jobs are this hard to come by. I'd rather suffer through a bad workplace than unemployment. But apparently, some feel the opposite. And I'm just wondering, how many of you are there?

Project Crane Continues

As project Crane continues to sla-ghter headcount and increase exec compensation the job market becomes even more unfavorable leaving employees unable to pay their WF mortgages, car payments, personal loans and more. Severance pay is only for people with tenure. So many people we new to wells fargo just a couple of years ago which means at best they might see 2 weeks or so of severance. Pay your bills on that, good luck because its not possible. Unemployment in many states is around $200 a week. What can someone really do with that, NOTHING!!!!

British Retailers Cut Staff Due to High Costs

UK unemployment reached 5.2%, a five-year high. The retail sector lost 74,000 jobs year-on-year. Businesses attribute these job losses to higher labor costs. Increased National Insurance contributions and minimum wage hikes impacted hiring. Younger workers and consumer-facing businesses are most affected.

Am back on unemployment line for 12 weeks(earlier was 36 weeks - Thanks Rick Scott for sc--wing that) and last week 60K workers were laid off across the US so will be joining them in searching for next job.

Unemployment in MA is stuck

They are waiting for employer verification info. Haven't been issued a single payment and don't see any VZ contact info in the package regarding a contact for this specific issue. I've emailed VZ HR several times without response. Anybody else running into this or have a different contact? Monday I'll start making calls. Not desperate here but it would be nice to be getting the $$$ back from the system I've paid into for decades.

How Layoffs Increase a Company’s State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) Tax Rate

Many are wondering why the company layoffs are being done incrementally and not all at once or in large batch mode. The answer lies in the incentives the bank receives to operate this way. Let me explain.

What Is SUI?
State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) is a tax employers pay to fund unemployment benefits for workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. Every employer pays it — but not at the same rate.

Why the Rate Changes
States use an experience rating system.
This means your employer’s tax rate goes up or down based on how many former employees file unemployment claims.

  • More layoffs → more unemployment claims → higher SUI tax rate.
  • Fewer layoffs → fewer claims → lower SUI tax rate.

The rate can vary dramatically. In some states, employers with few layoffs pay almost nothing, while employers with heavy layoffs pay 10x or more.

How Layoffs Trigger Higher Costs

When a company lays off employees:

  • Those employees file for unemployment.
  • The state attributes those claims to the employer.
  • The employer’s SUI tax rate increases for the next year (or several years).
  • The company pays more per employee going forward.

For large employers, this can mean millions of dollars in additional annual taxes.

Why Companies Try to Avoid “Layoffs”

Because layoffs increase their tax rate, companies have a financial incentive to avoid anything that triggers an unemployment claim. This is why employees often see:

  • Sudden performance downgrades
  • “Voluntary resignation” pressure
  • PIPs used as exit ramps
  • RTO mandates that force attrition
  • Location changes employees can’t meet
  • “Resign or be terminated” conversations
  • Severance tied to waiving unemployment claims

These tactics shift the separation from employer‑initiated to employee‑initiated, which avoids unemployment claims and keeps the SUI tax rate low.

Why This Matters
Understanding this system helps employees recognize:

  • Why companies push resignations over layoffs
  • Why performance ratings suddenly change
  • Why severance may be tied to waiving unemployment
  • Why “restructuring” is framed as “performance management”
  • Why attrition‑by‑policy is cheaper than layoffs

This isn’t about conspiracy — it’s about incentives.
And incentives shape behavior that drives our illustrious culture.
