$900M Charge = 20K laid off

At the typical IBM burden rate of $180k average per FTE (at least when I was still at IBM), this equates to 5,000 US employees if the charge for reductions is $900M for the year. Since this is a $900M charge for the quarter, multiply that by 4 to get... — read more

This makes no sense

From where I sit, I see no coherent strategy at all. Due to the loss of skilled teams in this last RA move, we are paying over 37 million in penalties to drop 42 signed contracts (over 190 million in rev) that we no longer have the personnel to... — read more

I guess layoffs are good for stock

As many now former IBM employees are trying to find a way to provide for themselves and their families because they have lost their livelihoods, shareholders are jumping for joy because layoffs have bumped the stock up. Sad and infuriating... — read more

Did any country avoid layoffs?

From what I can see here, this truly was a worldwide cut. Is there any place around the globe where IBM didn't end up laying at least some people off?

IBM is discriminating older employees

IBM is a discriminating company. At the same time they RA older employees they are hiring summits. I think is great they are hiring people who just graduated college, they are the future. However, they should not RA amazing employees. This is... — read more

Laptop restricted?

Anyone else on the list notice their laptop get locked down via an update 2 days before the notification?

"Severance Pay" verses "Legal Settlement"

IBM is very clever. Most people on this site think they are receiving "severance pay". IBM never ever uses that term, for good reason. If you are RA'd and elect to file for unemployment, be very careful when asked if you received severance pay... — read more

Only 1 Month Severance?

Is it true that IBM only provides 1 month severance in this latest round of layoffs? If it is, then this is a new level of low.

Estimate: RA Size 5/2020

What's your estimate as it relates to the size of this RA? Felt like the biggest one so far (14 years with IBM)...

Did Canadian RA target 55+?

Not sure about other countries, but any Canadian who was RA'd, do you know if 55+ age group was targetted, as through personal conversations, that's what it sounds like.

IBM org/dept chart?

My team has changed names/departments/groups so many times, I don't know what's what. I'm trying to determine where my team is... (GTS/GBS???) does anyone have a chart/link somewhere? As far as I know, we weren't hit with RAs this round, but many... — read more

IBM Latest RAs are nothing new...2015 I was hit

I was RA'd in 2015 (ie let go not for performance but because my group was sinking 35% YOY)....it was about a 25k layoff then mostly US citizens. IBM US worked head count was 120k then i was told so this is a huge drop and quite stunning to be at... — read more

So done

I am one of the latest survivors. Am I happy? Am I ashamed? A little happy because I have some medical issues to resolve. I ashamed that others with greater skills than I will now be gone. I will get the medical out of the way. I will better my... — read more

Some things will never change

Now that we know who's gone and who's here to stay - at least for this round - it's obvious once again that nepotism runs rampant at IBM. When people say nobody is safe from layoffs, I always have to laugh at how naive they sound. Maybe you and I... — read more

Time for a shareholder referendum?

Current IBMer here, the RA was originally planned for Q1 longer before the pandemic started. After Arvind was announced and Q1 outlook worsened , I heard from pretty high up that he made the decision to hold off on the announcements at end of Q1... — read more

Inside IBM’s Purge of Thousands of Workers Who Have One Thing in Common “Age discrimination is an open secret like s-xual harassment was".

https://www.motherjones.com/crime-justice/2018/03/ibm-propublica-gray-hairs-old-heads/ I am surprised how time and again this company gets away with laying off older workers. Please read the article in Full to understand the magnitude of the sham... — read more

Who moved my cheese?

When I was laid off many years ago, my manager gave me the book, 'Who moved my cheese?' Her father gave it to her on her graduation day. He told her, "Read this every night, for 30 days, before you go to sleep." I did, and it changed my life. I... — read more

Open Power Management deserves blame

It starts from the top. Executives made presentations about what the company needed to do to compete and then never followed through. Open Power was one big rats nest of a strategy. The teams developing IBM branded products were always at odds... — read more

IBM OWBPA / RA May 2020

Has anyone asked for demographic info “required” under OWBPA (older workers benefit protection act)? https://blog.careerminds.com/the-older-workers-benefit-protection-act

Areas that's been hit won't get hit again.

There's a rumor going around that area's that have been hit in the U.S. won't be hit again. For example California, NY, etc. So it seems like IBM won't hit the same states twice. Best of luck friends.

How will they do business?

Not my problem (RA’d) but I am trying to understand what if any logic was applied. To use a plane analogy- low on fuel and over weight, they cut out the seats and c—pit and tossed it all out. No pilot or controls Left to run things... but hey... — read more

My Experience after RA

I got RAed on 02/2018, Band 8 senior software developer, 5 years in IBM (20 years total if you count the time I worked at the company IBM acquired). 54 years old. Sole income for the family, first time unemployment. A couple of months before... — read more
