I think that we do not abuse #H1B visas like some other companies

From an IT/Operations perspective I think it is mostly offshoring. This is cheaper than outsourcing or abusing the H1-B visa. They are hiring a lot of employees in Brno, Bratislava and Bangalore (lots of Bs) for 10-30 cents on the dollar what they'd pay a domestic IT worker. I haven't heard of any H-1B abuse. It is mostly a domestic team absorbing a bunch of new team members overseas. Hiring freezes domestically and hiring increases for international workers. So, eventually, much of the domestic IT staff is offshored through attrition. Without the bad press of mass layoffs.

Most of the outsourcing occurs on software development related projects. We pay Accenture or TechM for their code monkeys in India. Those companies do abuse the H1-B system for their imported workers. That is their business model, they do the illegal stuff so their customers don't have to.

I don't think AT&T is doing anything illegal with the outsourcing and offshoring. It is just unsavory.

The real scandal is targeted layoffs for older domestic workers to minimize future pension obligations. My org, under Mike Hargrove, had only about a 2% layoff this summer, but everyone I knew that got laid off was a long tenured employee over 40. From what I hear, supervisors had no say in who got the axe. It was completely up to HR, which tells you that job performance was not part of the equation.

I bet if laid off folks start posting their age and tenure, you will see a pattern.

MSFT will bring on another 1500 #H1B folks on board this year - mark my words, they will say that there is a shortage of domestic workers and will hire Indians, happens every year. At the same time they will let go thousands of American workers. 2016 layoffs will likely be bigger than the round we saw in 2015, there is a several warning signs there (and the economy is slowing down too)

This game has been unraveling for a couple of decades now, the worker is simply f---ed. We bought into the narrative that has been sold to our parents - go to school, work hard, all will be fine. F--- it. It's over.

This finished in 1990 and things are getting worse and worse for workers. Look at what's happening with the elections now, you have Trump scooping up votes of all pissed republican workers and you have Sanders doing the thing with pissed Dems.

I am not going to preach here as each of you will realize at some points (if you haven't already) - I am 100% for Capitalism, competition, etc. But structural changes have occurred over last 2 to 3 decades and the whole 'shareholder focus' thing is f---ing workers majorly. You can make an argument that they are putting in the money so an enterprise can function, but keep in mind that if you rape workers way too much (just like they are doing now) there will be no middle class to buy whatever that enterprise is selling.

And our middle class is melting at a rapid pace, it will hit under 50% of the workers pool in 2 years, and it will continue to shed 0.75% to 1% every year after. Real, inflation adjusted wages are in a constant fall, that f---ing does not help too.

So, OK, do the layoffs and channel more money for the Executives and Shareholders - but keep in mind that once you lose that middle class through #layoffs, #wagestagnation and all #H1B schemes designed to extract even more money from US workers, EVERYONE WILL BE WORSE OFF.

Economic history is bountiful with stories where pissed 'folk' took things in their hands once that have been f---ed for a bit too long - we are on that path for the first time in our history, so next decade will be very interesting...

H1B and layoff paradox

An observation about H1B & layoff paradox

So #H1B engineers were brought in with the assumption that there is a lack of local #engineers. Right? Now, when the company starts to layoff, it means they have extra resources that it is needed. So the original reason that they came, doesn't exist anymore. Thus, naturally and logically they should be the first to let go (without any insult or disrespect) However, I don't think it is the case. Am I missing something or it works differently?

i think #h1b game will end soon

Looking at all the complaints from this board about corruption in hiring/firing process, phony PIPs, excessive top executive compensation,

H-1bs hiring practice when so many Americans are out of jobs, etc... one has to wonder why there is no class action in the work?

Plug in an #H1B resource and all troubles are gone - if it were only that simple bro

Intel desperately needs more H1B visas

After the layoff that happened a few months ago, there are too many positions lying vacant. The best option for intel in this scenario is to have folks travel to the US on H1B. Such contract staff do not complain unnecessarily, are willing to work round the clock, don't sneak away from the office during work hours and above all, cost just a fraction of the old farts that were let go. All other companies are going the H1B route.. Intel should follow suit.

If it only were this simple, plug in an #H1B and you are done.... It'll all be milk and honey from that point on...

Need feedback - US Citizens laid off and replaced by H-1B contractors

Replacing citizens (or recent green card recipients) with #H1B raises serious #discrimination issues, as you see here: http://www.ieeeusa.org/policy/policy/2015/OSC-TALrequest.pdf

This is true even if the replacement is done through a contractor. If you are in these circumstances, please email me? All confidentiality assured. pauldonnelly@medialever.com

More #H1B visas will be hired next year

TOWNHALL: In some cases the department will ask managers input to help mislead or distract employees from the truth. They will reword or drop in some type of threat to shut people up (Such as look around these are not your friends but part of the engine driving us). We all must concentrate on the big picture to move our bank forward. (Manipulation to reduce group participation). Speeches on who we are going hate next and what is expected of you. One town hall fell just short of using the "n" word when talking about the government and Obama and then told everyone it was the governments fault you are not making more money. The hand trick implied who you will vote for since BA owns you. Then said we need your help to bring us into the future. The speaker said it is you who are the sharpest and finest and we could not do it without everyone in this room. Followed by the speech of next few months will be harder on everyone but we expect the best out of everyone (meaning slandering reviews). Followed by appreciation of who has been here the longest projected on the stage screen. Ironic each town hall names disappear from this list because they were purposely fired because of age.

If you have ever watched a TV rerun of the third Reich hate speech assemblies.

You would have tingles down your spine in fear when sitting through this garbage.

One person called in and said I have been passed up for promotions for five years and is performing all of his manager's duties. In the assembly room HR started scrambling like a terrorist had entered the building. Up front on stage HR was attempting to mute the line. Moynihan's cheeks turned red in anger and whispered to HR at bottom of the stage to get his name (pause)I want him fired. HR jumped up on stage with a jittery voice and said we do not have the facts and perhaps we can discuss later. The caller went on telling about the injustice and said HR had refused to discuss his complaints. Click disconnect went the speaker line. Needless to say they axed this person un-ethically. Common the guy just wanted to work hard and make more money with a promotion and HR ignored him. He sounded sincere and honest. Fired....

So true on #h1b

Due to the massive layoffs every several years, the numbers of employees aged 40+ is dramatically dropping as well as the company is wiping out the experienced workforce who will be replaced with young H1B visa engineers from India as the cycle picks back up

@1wfz+EUk8rsP is partially right, it has to do how things are accounted for to some extent. Also, a 100k IT worker here costs us 170K when all is calculated in (loaded costs, vacations, bonuses, etc.) - if they plug in a services IT person, it's likely it'll be less than that. Add to that some #H1B visa flavor, you'll likely get an Indian, onshore here in the States, on #IBM payroll for 50% of the cost that you'd be paying a Chevron employee. Also, you can let them go at any point, so there is no need to worry how to get rid of staff when needed, it makes you more nimble and you can scale up and down, get skills, get rid of skills as it's needed. It's he-l to manage though and it majorly fu--s up domestic workers as good paying jobs are disappearing because of the game I described above. Everyone is playing, you pick any Fortune 500 company and you'll find a fairly similar play taking place in any given IT group... It's sad...

#BACUNION would work great for everyone, right now they (execs) can do whatever they want to do to us. need more #H1B - OK, no problem, bring in 1000 new folks from offshore, send work #OFFSHORE - OK, no problem, close a department or two, send them to India. Lay off 100 people here - OK, let's do it. They are doing whatever they want to do

There's a good chance you will see an increase in local hiring

While Citrix was late to the outsourcing game (thanks to strong engineering leadership that resisted it for so long until the H-1Bs staged a coup in Fort Lauderdale and threw them out), the rest of the industry has realized outsourcing is a failure. This is why you see tech companies and organizations like FWD.us pushing so hard for increased H-1B caps and a 600% extension to the OPT program. They want the same cheap #H1B labor they can get overseas but within their own walls, where they can protect their IP better and not have to deal with annoying international labor issues. Elliott's strategy may cause a short-term increase in Citrix offshore headcount, but if the crony capitalists win in 2016, there's a good chance you will see an increase in local hiring that is dominated by visa holders.

#h1b trap has been well documented on the internet, our management has been doing this

Verizon should just rip the band-aid and move all the jobs to India, more people will move away from Verizon services and their stocks will take a plunge. Verizon employees are their customers as well, existing customers will not tolerate third world customer service regardless of how "Superior" the network is. A product is useless without good customer service. At the end the day its not the end of the world, plenty of opportunity outside of Verizon, put that education to use. If the government cared whether American jobs were being outsourced, they could easily ban it, but that will never happen. If there are no jobs available for American Citizens, no one will pay taxes or pay for services it's as simple as that. People need to remember these services are a luxury not a necessity, if more people either boycott or discontinue services, these companies as well as the economy will crumble.. Which is a good thing, stop feeding the snake that keeps biting your head off. #h1b #offshoring

I am thankful today because...

I am thankful for my new job and the opportunity to work on challenging projects again. I am thankful I have a boss who actually is trained in what I do and can offer input into what I do. I am thankful for an #H1B free environment. I am thankful for no more lies, distorted performance reviews, and the need to find at least one or two things wrong with how I work. I am thankful for no more HR bull. I am thankful for this beautiful San Diego weather. I am thankful for parking 10 yards from my office. I am thankful for no more project meetings with half the team missing it so the can go to their employee group meetings. I am thankful for getting out of a cubicle and back into an office. Most of all, I am thankful for the check I am going to get in two weeks.

Boycot their products, theme parks, etc. It's kind of hard to stop watching #ABCTV or #ESPN - Disney's have had a ton of troubles with their IT folks due to #H1B down in Orlando
