I’ve been hearing about people being let go here and there, but the frequency has definitely increased lately. Is it just my perception, or are quiet layoffs actually happening more often now?

It won’t matter when your number is up. The less effort you put in, the less you’ll regret it when they kick you to the curb regardless of how good you were at your job, or how skilled or experienced you are.
