Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

VSP are not very clear or informative (not unlike every other thing at Centene)

Now let's figure out how this is ok.
I looked over the VSP, not in detail so I might have missed some things, however, these are my questions:

what happens to your sick/accrued PTO? Did not notice any mention of this.

lets say that you do not "apply" for VSP, why arent they mentioning what the severance will be if they pick you to be layed off in August or perhaps the second round of layoffs which i suspect will be later on once they get their bearings after the first layoff.

Now lets say you "apply" for VSP, but they decline, only to later lay you off in August (as their numbers haven't been met). Doesnt seem very ethical as now they dont have to give you the additional benefit of VSP and terminate you with just the basic severance. That seems a bit shady, as this could be one of the methods to let people go and have less cost as they will not provide the additional benefit that you originally applied for.

I know that all states are different, however I think it would be nice if they looked into it and included into individualized offers the information on our ability/inability to file for unemployment.

Seems to me that this entire situation and the way it is handled is only to benefit Centene with absolutely no regard for thousands of people who have gone above and beyond in their jobs. I know that this is the state of the current corporate world, but there must be something that can be done to stand up to these bullies. I wonder if the legal department has anyone who also got the VSP and might have some ideas :)

@ak from my understanding they are counting this year as an "extra" year...even if it is not a full year yet. Which accounts for the extra two years you are seeing in severance.

@ak After speaking with my PL, that is exactly how it was explained to me, people that take the VSP will receive an additional 4 weeks where as severance would only have been 8 weeks total for an actual layoff, I have also been here 3yrs and received the same 12 week offer.

In Nevada they are not required to pay out sick time of PTO. It falls to state law.

The documentation in the FAQ states that you will lose any PTO/SL other than where law requires it be paid. So the suggestion would be to burn it all before your leave if taking VSP.

PTO is only paid out where laws require it. This includes Ohio, Illinois, California, and others. This is VSP, RIF or just regular leaving the org.

@a5 I have been with a company 3 years. By your logic I would only be offered 6 weeks. However I noticed in the offer I received I was offered a minimum of eight weeks plus the additional four weeks. What does that mean? Was I offered an additional two weeks on top just because it is a voluntary offer or would that eight weeks be my offer should I be laid off?

So, what happens to your Vacation/Sick time, if you accept the offer? This isn’t my first rodeo, and most likely you will lose it. However, I was wondering, in the event you take the VSP, couldn’t you then take your vacation, or get sick on a weekly basis, between now and 9/2, or are they deliberately not saying, because like most corporations, when you give your notice, your vacation/sick, are locked down? Which means, either way, you forfeit your additional monies! Therefore, I would be taking vacation and getting sick A LOT, prior to submitting my application to take the VSP. Also, great job to the Leadership team, on making the entire organization as unproductive as possible! 🤣

Centene does not pay out sick/accrued PTO regardless of a voluntary or involuntary RIF or normal resignation. Use it or lose it.

Historically, severance has been 2 weeks for every full year of service based on your position which is typical for the average individual contributor (ex: vp, exec, directors, c-suite may have different package) The only difference with the voluntary severance package is that may get an additional 4 weeks of severance and additional extended time of cobra subsidy (same employee rate vs actual cobra rate with is insane).

Just remember that if you need insurance post employment, look at the rates of 2026 cobra under benefits out on CNET because its extremely expensive so if Centene is contributing to that, it is $$ that you are receiving just not in case its in another form.

Do whats best for you
