Has anybody done it? Are there any risks to approaching my boss about it?

It depends if you are in a critical position and needed. I requested vl and since I was involved in the Fremont fab earthquake retrofit project, they did not grant it until 13 months later after the completion of the seismic project. 2 prior rifs had occurred before then. We had already relocated to New Mexico to be near family by then. I did receive the severance package. After taxes it wasn't much.
It's too late for November as the book is closed and legal review is completed.
You would be volunteering for the next one.
I have seen ex coworkers ask for the same.
