How may weeks of Cobra?

@ka No mention of them paying the first month in the paperwork I have received so far. I haven't reached the termination date yet though (when the Cobra paperwork arrives)
@av By law COBRA is 18 months. O pays for the first month. You pay for the rest.
@a6 Yes, I was shocked to learn about the COBRA dead zone. I'm older and see doctors and physical therapists a couple times a month, and refill an expensive diabetes dr-g every 4 weeks, and so that 20 day dead zone is really going to su-k, especially if I have a dr-g refill during that time. I can't believe they do that. I'm also worried that COBRA won't really be precisely the same as what we had, even though it is supposed to. I hope the decision making process for dr-gs is the identical (rather liberal) since my dr-g is pretty expensive and our medical plan was pretty generous with the approvals.
are they capping weeks 4+years of service to a max number?
how long is cobra? 1 year?
@ak Cobra may be expensive if you have a PPO, so plan better for next year.
If you're over 65, remember that ACA is not Medicare compliant. Don't ding your future Medicare premiums for not enrolling there.
@ae Especially if you are older. I priced ACA vs COBRA and COBRA was cheaper and better. Perhaps if you are young, ACA might be cheaper.
Cobra HSA is cheaper than ACA. You won't get qualify for subsidies because you're "too rich". Bring next year's income below the very low threshold to get cheap coverage.
Was RIF'd in this round. The insurance situation is bleak. No COBRA is included and it's much worse than that. The insurance is cancelled on your last day at 11:59 PM. You don't get the COBRA paperwork to elect in until 7-10 business days later (electonically it might be avaialble in 3-5 days) and then after you pay the expensive premimum it takes up to another 10 business days before it gets activated. So for up to 20 business days (basically a month) you can pay for COBRA, but if you go to a provider during that time they will see the policy as cancelled when they look it up.
Canada is 2-3 weeks per year based on tenure, just above above minimums by law. It is quite pathetic compared to other tech companies. Can't complain better than US. Better times lie ahead, think of the layoff as a lifeboat leaving the Titanic. Oracle is heading to icebergs full speed.
You cant afford Cobra after a layoff without job.
