Thread regarding Lenovo layoffs

Layoffs sometime soon

Too many rumors going around to just ignore them outright. Does anybody here know anything about potential layoffs in the next month or two?

@2yn Ever been to the real HQ in Beijing? 90%+ East Asian mostly under 30. Not to mention sites in Europe and South America...

Sounds like you just don't like Americans to me.

@39a 100% accurate. I see my old manager living the life on Lenovo's dime. Flying around and dining steak with the "team" abroad. He posts it on linkedin for everyone to see. He writes cr-p like people connections are important blah blah, but when I traveled to deliver real work for customers he nit picked every expense.

@2vy yes- ageism is very much a factor. And Lenovo very cleverly includes just enough younger employees to even it out so the percentages by age don’t raise too big a red flag.

Then they fill the experienced ( older, performing , and now laid off employees) roles with younger, less expensive workers…. Tale as old as time.
And—— the workload for the remaining employees typically increases or things get dropped because there’s only so many hours in a day. All the while, the mid- level and Director level folks are flying around, having expensive team dinners (vendor partners going bill) and posting on LinkedIn about it. All the while contributing very little value. Same old Lenovo

@19H As the majority of the demographic hired at Lenovo are white males, this would also be reflected the same in the layoff numbers.

@1dv 19H here checking back in. I was laid off and I got one of the documents that is required. It shows the position title of everyone laid off along with the ages of the same title employees who didn’t get laid off. You sign an NDA so you can’t share it, but in my round, it was very heavily skewed towards white men in their 50s. After you’re given the news, they herd you into a huge teams meeting and you can see the profile photos of everyone else in your group. This was my experience. Not speaking for everyone else but I’ve been told by others it’s pretty consistent. The company handles the layoff smoothly for the most part and the packages are what I’d say is the very low end of fair. It’s sad, but the layoff process is the one good thing Lenovo is good at. Probably because they have so much practice.

@19h did you get laid off? I'm kind of confused on this post. Just checking. Did you get laid off or you're just seeing paperwork on who gets laid off what is this document and when is everybody getting laid off

@1b7 The reality is, if you don't fall into a DEI bucket, you are at much higher risk.

@r9 - anyone over 50 (male or female) is a potential target. Especially if you’re not part of the IBM clique - if your esteemed mgr has that background…. Toxic environment and unfortunately, top performers and talented team members are targets if your group or division is headed by one of the old IBMers. They seem to always take care of their own- even if their “own” is low performing. Crazy.

@11b I got one too and ran it through ChatGPT. It was hundreds of people and for my round, white males over 50 were by far the largest group. Directors and above were basically zero....of course.

@w0 as a 50 year old male I was given the OWBPA liat showing all the ages and groups affected. I can’t publish it here but I assure you it was all over the place. Not just one division.

@r9 can anyone share real details? Groups, ish, wtvr... I find it to be a pretty tight lipped company. People say there's layoffs I haven't seen much this year. But hopefully all y'all are wrong unless you got good information share it

There will be a layoff around thanksgiving because there always is. No clue how many and what areas but it will happen. One pro tip, if you’re a male over 50, you should absolutely have your resume ready and your network working for you now.

@jn it was my Thanksgiving present last year. Very scary at first but I got through it and I couldn’t be happier.

Layoffs have shown a pattern of being in June and November. So you can count on another round this year around Thanksgiving. Instead of asking when it will happen, make an exit plan and save. I did and have no regrets.

@an pathetic response. This board provides way more and accurate information than the company ever has. You know when people find out what they “need to know” through official channels? When they suddenly have a 15 minute meeting hit their calendar from their manager on a Tuesday night for the following morning.
