Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

7 levels really

How can a company be financially viable when every level of management, which I looked up from a lowly tech to the ceo is 7 levels, which even my 1st level has only 8 employees. Industry standard is 18-25 (even at other industries) it’s the same, and above that 2-7 have 1-3 employees under them! The company cannot be financially responsible with so few reports under each layer, it is irresponsible to allow such a financial travesty to continue! Each layer should have 8-10 reports as a minimum! Go look at other industries including ATT or Frito Lay! Look it up it’s insane, this good ole boy days of butt kissing to get a made up position to check off one box are over, they expect the techs in the field to be super universal techs, then also should all levels of management. Let me clean house and pretend I am Elon Musk!

@fe hence the part where you said alot of locals. They are all different numb skull verizon and fritolay are one company each. So by comparing all the locals from Virginia to Maine you would would have to count all the phone companies from Virginia to Maine and all the managers in each company frontiers bosses ,att's bosses, Comcasts bosses

Fritolay? I’m picturing your cousin Joey Cheesdoodles telling people that even though he drives the Dipsydoodles delivery van, he’s only 3 levels from the Top. You are Fake news!! You want to count levels and titles- open up the CWA and IBEW contract books and you’ll find 200+ from Va to Maine. Not to mention the other levels - Steward, Chief Steward, Local VP, Local Treasurer, Local Pres…then it goes to Buss Agent, National VP(s), National Treasurer, National Pres. and oh- theres lots of locals that feed up to the Nationals. Frito-Lay!!!

@OP Verizon has so many levels because the ultimate strategy is to market it as a real world platform game. Think Squid Games for executives. Alfonso just leveled up.

There should be only 3 levels at any company.

It's so much debt.

Too many people too look good to competitors. New standard is the less people you have the more productive you are and more $$$$$$ saved.

@cw it is common for second and third levels to have very few direct reports, especially outside of operations in things like engineering. If you poke around the org chart you’ll see.

@aw VzT field techs don’t work from home. VzW cell site engineers are hybrid. They are in the field when they need to be. I’m pretty sure you’re talking about wireless. Either way this is a wildly misinformed statement.

AT&T has just about the same exact structure, as does cablevision/optimum/altice/comcast. No idea about frito-lay so I’ll take your word for it but I have no idea how that’s relevant lol.
I have also been here over 26 years and have never been in a gang with only 8 techs. Over 26 years, 7 garages and three lines of business and the gang size has averaged in the mid to high 20’s

@aw what on earth are you even talking about? Lol. Field techs can’t open tickets first of all , and secondly they have GPS on their vehicles so going home would instantly trigger on a report. And what department are you in they YOU are calling a field tech directly to report an issue is fixed?
Someone clearly doesn’t know their job here and it sounds like you lol

@aw field techs, Venders, opening tickets ?? What are are you even talking about ? I've been working here for 30 years outside in the "field" and never heard of any of this stuff. We don't open tickets we close them. We have no interaction with vendors whatsoever and no one calls us field techs. Maybe you are talking about wireless or something

In response to 7 layers- AT&T has almost an identical management structure to Vz and nearly the same language in their CWA agreements as us! Sounds like someone is a level (or inch counter). It’s not about how many levels. It should be about the incompetence in the levels. I know 10x more than my foreman but that’s a pretty doesn’t mean there should be a first liner. Frito Lays- what are you babbling about. Are you kidding me???

@OP Verizon field techs are super universal??? Give me a break! 80% of Verizon field techs don't know first thing about their jobs and all they do just keep opening tickets with vendors on every issue! They act like pretty expensive secretaries with their 120k wages. Verizon field techs rip the company off by doing their personal stuff while on the clock and by charging fake overtime! I call Verizon field techs to report that an issue is fixed and I hear their family life in the background meaning they are at home when they should be out in the field working! Verizon could save so much money if they got rid of 80% of their dead weight field techs who are just untrainable and have the remaining 20% of field techs who are reasonably good manage tickets and vendors!

Make up your mind. Do you want opportunities or z steep pyramid structure that makes it more impossible to move up? You’re also making the case for layoffs and why they’re necessary.

It’s not just the vertical layers—there are horizontal layers too. There are thousands of cross-functional stakeholders, with everyone bringing their own priorities and egos to the table. Things that should take two days can easily take six months just to get alignment. I’m not exaggerating.

Verizon has more layers than lasagna. Adding friction at each layer.
