Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Innovation Theater

Innovation doesn’t die because people run out of ideas.

It dies when meetings replace making.

When every experiment needs five approvals.

When PowerPoint or Keynote become more valuable than prototypes.

When politics outrank curiosity.

When protecting careers matters more than questioning assumptions.

When “alignment” becomes code for “don’t rock the boat.”

The irony is that the companies famous for disrupting industries often become experts at preserving the status quo.

You can hire the world’s best designers, engineers, and creatives, but if they’re rewarded for managing risk instead of creating value, don’t be surprised when innovation turns into theater.

Real innovation is messy. It creates tension. It challenges leaders. It makes some people uncomfortable.

If everyone in the room agrees, you’re probably not innovating—you’re just documenting consensus.

The biggest threat to innovation isn’t a lack of talent.

It’s bureaucracy wearing an innovation badge.

@rw There're handful of them but I know who you're talking about. That guy is arrogant and lives in his own bubble. Completely out of touch and it's pathetic to see that many people still believe his is a legend. That dude should be axed 5 years ago, everything came out from his team just trash.

@e7 The funny part is that people think Nike has this massive, thriving innovation ecosystem. In practice, it's more like a tiny royal court where the same handful of people have crowned themselves the guardians of innovation for years.

Never mind that the market, consumers, and technology have evolved, they're still convinced they're the smartest people in the room. One even said, completely seriously, that he couldn't retire because Nike simply couldn't survive without him at this moment. That level of delusion was almost inspirational. No names necessary, anyone who's spent enough time at LBJ can probably identify the speaker without much effort.

@e7 I love blended teams. It’s where expertise goes into a blender and accountability gets poured down the drain.

For whatever reason Nike’s stage of innovation theater is still too democratic and way too crowded. Cross functional doesn’t mean that marketing designs footwear and footwear doesn’t design a mobile app.

Please….make a shoe put it on the table. You don’t have time to make… draw it and give it to one of the concepts makers at Nike. Everyone is too comfy. Once you leave you will see how hungry companies with no resources work and simply get after it.

@am the ones left there are part of a cult and they all believe they are making the world better one shoe at the time. I’ve actually heard this from a “leader” and I felt I had to ba-f after that.

@ag Bro that’s not AI, you know that.
NXT has been like that for YEARS. The pace is so f*cking slow and everyone is backstabbing each other.

If you don’t agree. That’s fine, just prove it. I am more than happy to see what you guys have to show the world. Btw I am still waiting…
