Thread regarding PNC layoffs

12/3 Tech Fireside RTO announcement.

Question was posed at this quarters fireside chat where Demchak essentially "hinted" that 5 day return to office will be required following a flowery rant about how while WFH "benefits employees" it "harms the company" and that he is trying to imagine a world where "he is asking you to do your job".

Good luck everyone in Pittsburgh, I would not plan on a cost of living adjustment or a commute benefit coming down the pipeline while Ol' Bill claims his 2026 stock award of the tens of millions.

@57g when I see all the downvote bombardment on a rumor that will be validated in a week. It speaks to me that it's attempted suppression by bad actors. So it's probably true.

@1ww you can get ten paid days off a year to care for a parent (in addition to occasional absences). It isn’t a well known benefit.

The most frustrating thing is know that Bill is surrounded by Boomer minded yes men telling him that all his remote workers Must be stealing time from him. If they have evidence, FIRE THOSE EMPLOYEES. But the thing is they don't have evidence of mass time theft. I have worked remote at multiple companies, and while I may run to a doctor's appointment over a long lunch (discussed with the boss) I give back that time in other ways. For example, a major issue just happened and I was easily willing to skip lunch and stay late ALONG WITH logging in early the next day because being remote makes the extra time not a big deal. If I was in office I would be out on time, every time.
Bill wants to have his cake and eat it too, goaded on by late 20th century fools that think daycare past 6pm costs a nickel, parking is a dollar a day, and the bus is full of businessmen in suits.
I believe this is a soft layoff attempt as Bill is also mad stock price growth was ONLY 2.5%. He wants venture capital growth coupled with the gilded parachute of an established brand when he finally leaves PNC.

It is important to note that IF this bad publicity get them to rescind or delay this announcement we SHOULD NOT take that as winning. The ball has started to unionize and we need to take this opportunity to ensure that we are treated fairly now and into the future. While this notice may be the catalyst, years of low wages and raises increasingly lower then the cost of inflation is the fuel to this fire.

Giving up because they rescind the RTO announcement due to bad publicity doesn't stop them from waiting for a more opportune time to pull the same tactic. The only consistent protection for us is to unionize and take power of our labor.

There are a lot of people talking on another site about closing all their PNC accounts the day the memo comes out. Bill only cares about money, so hit him where it hurts. Tell all your family and friends to close their accounts too. He is being so petty now...I have worked for PNC for almost 30 years (the first 15 for a company that was acquired) and this is the first time ever we are not allowed to leave early on Christmas Eve. That says a lot about how he feels about his employees.

@28e Agreed. No union == Being at the mercy of executives who only care about their bonuses and bottom line. Even if we make a big deal about it now and they change their mind, what guarantees they won't just wait a few months or a year and try it again? Do we have the energy and resources to raise he-l about this every few weeks/months with only bad PR effecting their decisions if at all? We have to look out for each other collectively and union is the only way we know we have a fairer seat at the table.

The union route is the way to go in this case.

@24n I think that remains to be seen but in my opinion, I would consider it as having to come in. Don’t wait to make some decisions, for example, look into transportation needs for yourself or even updating your resume as MANY that I know have decided to do. There are an abundance of remote jobs out there as I’ve looked myself. More companies than not, are implementing hybrid permanently which has proven to keep employees happier.

Does anyone know how this applies to remote workers not close to a tech designated office. Will they get exemptions or be forced to relocate/find a new role

@218 these are “stories” of real people’s lives and their families, some of which are ill. It’s extremely difficult as a caregiver when you see a loved one declining. I hope you never have anyone in your family decline while you’re working five days a week in the office. Try having a little bit of compassion for humanity.

If cheaply trimming some fat from this bloated org is BD's real goal here, how can you blame him reading all the ridiculous s-b stories in this thread?

by

Post ID: @218+1kbjhrba6

I understand BD’s desire/pressure to push RTO, but to insult your employees and still pay them below market salaries is comical.

Post ID: @217+1kbjhrba6

BD, you have always stated your philosophy was to stay grounded and remember who you serve. Who do you serve?

We, your employees, serve our customers. If the employee that posted below is serving her customers, why would you take flexibility away from her?

If she was not able to serve her customers, you would have let her go a long time ago through the performance review process, correct? So she must be doing her job well.

You also stated you wanted to surround yourself with people that challenge you. Please ask yourself if you are doing that now. Are your directs able to speak openly? If they are not able to speak openly about this, what else are they holding back on telling you. Intimidation as a management style can only go so far.

Please step back and take another look at your approach to this topic. Changing your mind, is not a sign of weakness. Great leaders often adjust their approaches as new information comes to light.

@1ww There are two benefits you can look into. First is the federal Family amd Medical Leave Act, or FMLA. You can apply for intermittent FMLA for you to care for a relative. Another option is PNC's Family Leave policy, which is a PNC specific benefit that works in a similar way. Talk with your manager or your HR Business partner to learn more.

Since this announcement, I can hardly sleep. My anxiety is through the roof and I can’t stop crying. This decision of a five day work week is going to affect my life in so many ways. I’m a primary caregiver for my mom and I’m dealing with my own health problems as I’ve gotten older.

I take her to just the “important” doctor’s appointments which are all relatively close to my home and hers. I won’t let a stranger take her because I need to communicate effectively with her doctor. I’m all she has. This means I’m now going to use the majority of my sick days in the first few months (not only for her, but myself also) and then I will have to take 4 hour increments or even a full vacation day because I’ll have to commute from downtown. The bus I’d take only runs at peak times morning & after 3:30pm) which isn’t gonna work if I take a half day. I’m going to have to drive in and it will cost me $25 a day to park. I can’t park in the northside because the shuttle doesn’t run all day. I’m going to have to be absent from work much more when this is implemented. Had I known about this, maybe I could’ve purchased additional vacation time.

Because of the cost of everything going up, I also do food delivery on the weekends, trying to make ends meet and help with my mom’s bills.

I’m trying hard to not to get myself worked up, at least not in front of her, because I don’t wanna cause myself to have a heart attack or stroke from this situation. She needs me here to care for her. I have a feeling 2026 is going to be a very bad year for me.

@1q6 big bill needs his incentive that is 6 times his base salary. Cant afford to pay employees when you're posting billions each quarter.

Post ID: @1qw+1kbjhrba6

@1q6 Exactly. I am so happy working from home that I go above and beyond every day for PNC. I would be miserable in the office. For me personally, I would rather take a pay cut and work from home than get a raise and be in the office.

It’s so sad to work for a company that openly doesn’t care about their employees. Also, it would be one thing to send people back to the office and increase salaries to reflect the additional expenses. But we will continue to be one of the lowest paying banks with sh-t raises. Also does Billy not realize high morale= higher incentive to go above and beyond, whereas low morale=people not giving a sh-t and doing the bare minimum to keep their job? What a joke.

How much do yinz want to bet they're sending the legal and the cyber security teams out to do damage reduction on this post ever since it got news attention.

I've heard about the security teams workload, PNC treats them like dogs.

For that team, if you see something, say NOTHING. A pat on the back before you get a 2% yearly pay raise is not worth betraying people locked into the same struggle as you. If you strike the entire company falls. Solidarity from a Developer, keep up the struggle.

@1g0 daycare is expensive these days. It's more than a mortgage in some cases. So it's not always an option or a cheaper one isn't convenient when you have to be downtown. Don't be an a--hole. I also doubt ol billy boy is gonna go help pickup someone's kids when they can't make to get them in time because they are stuck downtown. Not everyone who works from home watches their kids either.

My irony in how this guy "hates contractors" and "thinks contractors are the worst" (I swear he was about to say something racist and stopped himself) -- while shooting off this soft layoff so they can replace more PNC employees with offshore contractors. Even his racism is beat by his greed.

Wonder if they are going to bring back all of the remote jobs they sent to India in 2024? Demchak doesn't care about his employees, if they did they wouldn't notify people that are on vacation that their jobs are be terminated. Worst company to ever work for.

As a working parent, when I had two young children, I had full-time coverage from my mother. But I was able to help my mother make lunch for the kids and help her get the kids down for a nap. I rarely took more than two 15 minute breaks a day. In return for the flexibility, I worked a ton of unpaid overtime. I never complained about the hours as I appreciated the flexibility. I was also considered a top performer on my team.

How can we say we support early childhood development, when take away any flexibility parents?

Addressing the question asked to a working mom about whether her children are in day care while she’s working….

A child of daycare age (say under around the age of 5) can’t be taken care of well by a person who is working at home full time. And such a person is not doing their job effectively, taking advantage of the system, etc. The hands on care of young children does not allow for being effective that way. This is obvious. Would venture to guess PNC parents aren’t doing this….

That said, only a person who is truly ignorant would not see the vast list of benefits to remote work for parents. When you work from home, you have zero commute time - saving you potentially hours in your day. When you are tethered to your home instead of a cubicle, you can work effectively, and react to random days your children are sick, snow days, tending to minor tasks around the house (it takes less than 5 minutes to throw a load of laundry in.) Your children are likely 10-15 minutes away. You need to pick them up from school - you can do so while taking a conference call in the car. All this technology does have its benefits after all! Children who are school age can do their homework while mom or dad finish their workday. Vs getting after school care, paying for it, etc. Children benefit when mom or dad are physically in the house, even if they are in another room working. After school activities?? No one is rushing to get home in rush hour traffic. Less pressure. Less stress.

Even if you are able to do this 2 days / week, it’s huge. But zero days going forward? That’s a big quality of life impact. And if you’re a single parent?? I can only imagine…

People have built their lives around the current model they have today. It is highly disruptive to take it away. If you are a mom or dad, you know exactly what I’m talking about! Only a person without children or without any responsibility for them day-to-day doesn’t get that.

Hi PNC workers. We received a request for the contact of a union organizer at our Committee for Better Banks email staff@betterbanks.org

My name is Nick Weiner and I'm a union organizer with CWA. Text me at 202-352-7944 or nweiner@cwa-union.org and we can schedule a meeting. Feel free to google me, you'll find my name in many news article regarding Wells Fargo workers organizing a union.

Forming a union is a lot of work but if you work together, you can do it. I look forward to hearing from you.

Did anyone see how this Website’s traction led to a story today in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette acknowledging the rumors. They referenced Bills Town Hall and comments. PNC had “no comment but will have an announcement in the new year”. So, There is no ability to pivot the communication strategy since Bill got in front of it, so they’ll allow everyone to just be twisting in the wind. In December. Two weeks before Christmas. Good job guys!

Go ahead and down rate my comment but I’m not wrong.
