Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Severance pay timeline

First, I asked my supervisor and HR and no clear answer so I am asking here as many of you got severance. Does the payment come on normal pay cycle (6th, 21st), I was surplused in November and no check yet, I got denied unemployment because Company listed I got severance but nothing yet, bad time of year to have no pay, severance would help, job searching tough. Appreciate any input

@OP 45 days from the time you sign the waiver agreement. I purposely waited until the end of this month to sign mine so I wouldn't be taxed this year. I have money saved to wait the 45 days, I am sure you will be paid soon if you signed in November, hang in there.

“ Correct, your severance makes you ineligible for unemployment benefits for the number of weeks you received severance for even if it is in lump sum“

Completely dependent on state law, this is not the same in every state.

Correct, your severance makes you ineligible for unemployment benefits for the number of weeks you received severance for even if it is in lump sum.
You can claim after the period for which your severance covers, for example after 20, 32, or 40 weeks.

There is unfortunately a claus in the fine print of the memo you apparently didn't get stating that a portion of your severance pay shall be withheld to cover administrative costs for your dismissal.

All of this talk and concern about being able to “sue” the company…

You’re not suing the company. It sounds cute, but they are a giant corporation with unlimited resources , and you’re a dimwit with zero savings who doesn’t have the time or money to prevail in that situation. Sorry if that sounds harsh but that’s the facts.

I cashed out my pension to buy me time, then I had my attorney do their magic. In the end I came out ahead. If you don't have a pension, sign the waiver.

After you sign the waiver, you will receive the severance in 4-6 weeks on one of the two pay days. In California, severance has nothing to do with unemployment. Not sure about other states though.

go to a lawyer first before waiving your right to sue

Accepting severance = waving your right to sue. Check what you signed.

"Why don’t people actually plan for 3-5 months of expenses in the event of a job loss??"
What an azoooo...

Yeah, people should do that.

Some have eldercare, special needs kids, or they live in high cost states.

But you be you!

Why don’t people actually plan for 3-5 months of expenses in the event of a job loss?? Oh that’s right, you just had to go on that vacation and buy that car so you looked richer than you are.

Sorry, don’t feel bad for you. Save, don’t spend.

The month I was surplussed it was on the 12th. Received unused vacation pay the 21st of that month and the severance payment the 6th of the following month. I was surprised how quickly everything came through. Best of luck.

Treatment of severance for unemployment payment varies from state to state
New Jersey probably pays unemployment irrespective of AT&T severance

Standard feedback is 30 -45 days. Hang in there.

And stop talking to your supervisor, they couldn't give a flying flip about you.

You are in bad shape financially speaking if you are that dependent on severance pay. UNREAL!
