For once I don't think it's layoffs because they'd be happy to announce that given any opportunity. I'm not sure what it is instead though.

@dy yup spot on. Any communications at all are subject to later lawsuits. The only thing they want is the day of to have HR read from scripts and send pre baked documents.
Absolutely also if layoffs actually announced in advance, no work will happen until the date. That's largely what's happening anyway but would probably even be worse. Smart management would cut hard deep and as fast as possible, so don't need another round for years. But that would require significant competence
It's a defensive legal topic. They are avoiding any possible lawsuits to prevent the actions and come up with reasons.
They never announce layoffs. It’s for the benefit of those impacted and as one person said, cuts never stop at PepsiCo. There is still so much cutting to be done with duplicative work and facilities serving the same markets. The circle of leaders has been kept small this go around so less leaks and it means more layoffs than usual.
Layoffs will never be announced verbally. They will also never say that layoffs are “finished” because there will always be another round… maybe the next week, next February, next year. At most, the terms “restructuring” or “productivity” will be used. HR is purposely cryptic. But that is their job. If people around you are impacted and you are not, but you hear nothing until later, then HR was successful. However, the chatter is so loud these days, I don’t know how anyone doesn’t know the current rumors! Good luck everyone!
I think they are keeping it under wraps, if it’s announced early then employees have the incentive to do nothing and converse with each other about it. It’s a toxic method, but unfortunately they will wait until the very last minute to drop the ball on us. PEP (HR and the LTs) are covering their own a$$ from a PR nightmare if they explicitly said that jobs were going to be mass offshored.
Same reason why there was no RTO policy sent out and it was verbally passed down the line. Anything concrete could be leaked to news sources, it only takes one whistleblower
