Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Layoff communications to employees

When a layoff occurs does it come from your direct manager, senior manager, or Human Resources? Is it during a one on one meeting? How do they determine severance depending on band level, if offered at all? What happens to any unused accrued time off after a layoff notification has happened? Do they give a 30 day notice? Lots of questions, thanks.

@tn I don't believe you can enlist a law firm to get you more severance. Not buying it. Cigna has there big team of corporate lawyers to fight any actions. In my honest opinion, do what the previous person said, take the severance offer and move on with your life. Not worth getting nothing. Unless there is a legal reference you (or anyone else) can provide where ex-employees received additional severance by fighting it.

@dc Bands 3-5 will receive 2 YEARS of severance for each full year of service? That is a heck of a typo to make!
It is 2 weeks of severance pay per year of continuous service no matter what Band you are. The Minimum Benefit period depends on your Band and level within that band. The maximum benefit period for EVERYONE is 52 weeks. The PDF is available on HR Central - Enterprise Severance Plan 7.1.2026 Page 7
And for the person saying to take all your PTO now because they no longer pay it out...if you take more than you have accumulated for the year they will take it out as an "overpayment". That is also in there on page 4
As for health insurance you get subsidized COBRA, which is not too much of an increase. After your severance ends it jumps through the roof $$$$! That can be found on HR Central too.

@pw I can assure you i am not HR.

you just don’t know how the game is played.

As soon as someone gets notified of a layoff, get with an attorney - have them negotiate your severance for a one time fee (not a percentage). You basically need the letterhead of the law firm to be taken serious to get more severance.

File an EEOC claim right away - discrimination, the firing of american workers while keeping Indian non citizen workers.

People need to rise up - as others have mentioned you get one chance to stand up.

Anyone encouraging any action in favor of the company is a shill & should be IGNORED!!

FILE AN EEOC CLAIM AGAINST CIGNA!

@es you sound like an HR trap trying to trick people into a lawsuit Cigna has rehearsed against in an attempt to make them forfeit their severance

HR bots still active on this site. They have shifted their focus now. Us vs them and religious context is not appropriate. Bad Hr Bot -- get better! You lucky you aren't real.

Don't just accept your severance -- honestly file an EEOC CLAIM AGAINST CIGNA RIGHT AWAY FOR DISCRIMIATION!!

Back onto the rails…

You’ll typically get a meeting invite for first thing on a non-pay-week Thursday morning. An HR person will join and read a very sanitized script. You’ll have a couple of days to read terms and sign.
Don’t be d-mb here. Sign it and move on with your life.

Your notification date will be the day of the layoff call with a termination date 30-60ish days later. The last few big rounds have been 60 days of notification.

The vast majority of terminated employees are not expected to work through their notification period with most losing systems access immediately.

Bands 3-5 will receive 2 years of severance for each full year of service. If your salary is over $100K, you will automatically get a minimum of 22 weeks. I’m unsure of lower bands.
Read the severance policy to double check me.

Severance is paid on the normal biweekly schedule.

You will receive full benefits through the notification period with the option of COBRA thereafter.

If the termination date is after Sept 30 you will receive at least your prorated bonus if eligible.

Bands 5 and below no longer get paid for unused PTO. The tradeoff is that they front load 56 hours of PTO in January which you do not owe back if terminated.

@OP

  • Usually notification will come from your direct manager during a 1x1 meeting on a Thursday.
  • Band determines the minimum number of weeks to be paid out. So does salary. Search "severance" on HR central for details.
  • You lose your unused PTO, but your termination date is (usually) a month after your notification date, and you are not (typically) expected to work during that time.

@d9 how about you shut the front door & stay on topic. stop bringing up religion to distract. you are doing a poor job and need to be terminated.

and don’t forget FILE AN EEOC CLAIM AGAINST CIGNA!

@OP The severance policy is on IRIS, just search "severance."

As far as unused PTO, as of last year they don't pay it out - which is basically a pay cut. Take PTO now.

@at

Not sure what a "ceramic" culture is but I'm a live-and-let-live type. Believe as you wish, fine, but keep it all away from unrelated public forums where many may not share your stance.

The same reason I would not talk Cigna layoffs on a bible board...

@at Agree. Religion is strongly intertwined with a person’s culture. Almost impossible to separate. And if the religions are too far different, then that is usually why the two different cultures cannot get along well.

They can fake it for awhile and put on a facade. But there are some religions and cultures that almost demand that their own laws be established within the country they are seeking to be a part of or work with from afar. But in the end, it never ends well.

@ap And this is exactly why ceramic cultures will never be able to coincide in close proximity.

@ap I am not the poster but am also a believer. What they wrote is not fairy tales. You just do not have faith. Hopefully you will be given the gift of faith. Until then, however, the unbelief is on you, I am afraid.
