USA should pass a law for Free healthcare for laidoff workers paid by the company laying off

USA should pass a law that says, any corporation laying off or firing anyone in USA who is under the age of 65 will get free paid Healthcare until they reach age 65 when Medicare kicks in.

Makes sense until you see your $1500/mo cell phone bill, etc. Corporations wouldn’t pay for this.. costs would be pushed to the consumer. It’s kinda how businesses works

@bv Did you bother to actually read what the poster wrote? Clearly you did NOT read the post at all! And, what the poser said is true because its a concept not a fact they stated! So let my bring it down to your lower IQ level.

1 year of service =1 month of healthcare.
5 year of service = 5 months of healthcare.
10 years of service = 10 months of healthcare.
18 years of service = 1.5 year of healthcare.
24 years of service = 2 YEARS of healthcare.

Get it now, I mean the poster was pretty clear and understood by anyone with a 6th grade education. Personally I think it is brilliant idea.

Maybe capped premiums for 12 months or so, then a gradual rise might work

@bm this is not true. Your paid medical is for the same number of weeks as your severance, up to a max of 35 weeks. Someone with 12 full years will get 24 weeks of severance and paid medical. After that you are on your own.

What a BAD idea! This would mean companies where only hire the least amount of people and work them to the bone. However, COBRA is a joke so I get it. What needs to happen is this. You carry your company healthcare 1 month for each year worked.... 12 years, 1 year of healthcare. That seems fair to me and fair to the company too.

I agree completely that reform is needed. When someone is laid off, it is a psychological blow that tests a person’s sense of security and self-worth. You suddenly lose your income, you’re forced into an immediate job search, and the clock starts ticking on your financial stability. That alone is incredibly stressful.

But on top of all that, the cost of healthcare skyrockets the moment they’re offered COBRA. The same coverage they relied on the day before becomes drastically more expensive. It is another punch when they’re already down. At the very least, COBRA should remain at the same cost an employee paid before being laid off for the entire period employers are legally required to offer it.
