Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

My Layoff Story…twice

The first time back in Feb of ‘22…the Thursday before Super Bowl weekend. A 15 min invite dropped in my calendar at 7:30 am that Thursday…invite was sent from the Director to meet at 9 am. Was given notice of my Rif and given 30 days to find a new role or leave. Thankfully I found a new role and stayed.

The second time in July of ‘24…had moved to a different role a yr prior at the invitation of a sly director. Same sly director who asked me to join his team the year prior laid me off a year later. “Business update” dropped in my calendar around 9 am for a fifteen minute meeting at 11 am same day. I knew what it was.

But, the second time came with VSP since our group wasn’t eligible to volunteer. So, the second layoff more than doubled the severance offer given on the first layoff.

Found a role to stay, but decided it was time to get of the VZ train. Glad to have found my exit with such a nice payout and was fully employed again within six weeks.

Good luck all. If your number is up, you WILL bounce back! For everyone else, keep riding the gravy train as long as you can, but always have a backup plan.

Getting a cold interview (where you are not known) is very hard. I watched people get their hopes up, but they didn't get interviews or even rejections. HRBP promised help that never came, as the clock clicked down. It would've been more humane for HR to not offer false hope.

@b1 Yes, you will have to apply and get an interview. Although getting close to end of year open requisitions are not filled and get closed to show head count reduction at end of year.
Depending on department or role you may find a job usually some roles donot find a job.
With end of year coming soon and people taking vacations enf of year and long weekend holidays in Thursday and in December the hiring managers are busy or slow to start interview. The jobs open just close without hiring managers interviewing this late in the year and reopen next year.
Dont wait for interview and reach out to hiring managers right away last 2 months pass very fast with long weekend holidays.

Q - I am new to my current position (>6mo but <1yr); would I be able to find a new role? Do you have to apply still? Are they going to offer you a new position? With interview or without? This is with the assumption with option to stay. Thanks.

Interesting. I don’t think there are many open requisitions right now like previous years. Good luck finding another role if RIF this year.

OP here - and if I hadn’t been laid off last year and were still with the company, I would be on the site worried about what Thursday would bring. Now that I’m out, I realize what a SICK culture VZ has created for even its most loyal prior. Much empathy for those stuck and stressing.
