Layoffs - Don't be the easy choice!

There’s been talk, from a source I trust, that leadership has been exploring workforce reductions. The numbers being floated include cuts of 15% up to roughly a quarter (25%) of staff under each director across most departments. The focus appears to be aggressive cost savings, and part of that includes looking at compensation levels and where employees are in their career timelines. Officially, they can’t say that’s a factor, but it’s being quietly discussed.

What’s even more concerning is that some highly skilled employees are being targeted not because of performance, but because they don’t fit in with their immediate manager’s preferences, push back against the status quo, or are seen as difficult simply for having a different perspective. If someone isn’t aligned with their leader or is viewed as inconvenient when numbers need to be met, they become an easy choice.

It’s incredibly hard on the people who consistently show up, do exceptional work, and still go unrecognized especially when they’re not being supported or advocated for by leadership. This year feels different. The impact will be left on the shoulders of the people that are left behind, overwhelmed, burning out, and losing their sense of pride in the workplace. But with cost cutting being seen as 'essential' to the business, this is the direction things seem to be heading.

Sadly, WFH folks who work harder and actually "show up" more than those reporting to a hub are likely on the chopping block. I know many assigned to BR who still don't report 3x/week and will get to keep their jobs, although they are serious slackers.

There are several reasons, but the big one right now is current work performed. This company is not going to be doing tomorrow, what it does today. Dan said it himself, it's refocusing on key areas. That means great people in nondirectional teams will go. It su-ks.

There is no answers, all you’ll get on this site is rumor. I’m sure there’s truth to them, but the whole picture we have to wait to see. By now the people have been picked and There’s nothing that can change whether you are or aren’t on the RIF list. I’m sure there’s good employees being let go just like there’s people that have blended in and got away with doing the bare minimum let go. It’s usually a mix. Take a breath and focus on your day to day tasks. To all those impacted I wish you well- we should all care about one another more than we have on this site. We have all been in the trenches together and we’re all scared

Let’s not make this any more difficult than it needs to be.

@am what reasons would sr directors or avp have to pick people that weren’t on the ADs lists of low performers? That doesn’t make any sense. Unless the directors or AVP just don’t like someone for some strange reason

Former employee here.

Looking back after going through one of the first RIFs with the company, I can tell you that all of the people that were let go along with me were people that were in for a while and stood up for issues in the workplace. It was definite a lesson learned in how to navigate a company, but nonetheless a situation that couldn't be avoided (at least for me).

People that were let go were those that had time in (10 years +), were grandfathered into the old vacation policy, those that didn't play the bureaucratic game with their direct managers, and those that were on their way to make more than the market worth of their fellow peers.

I've since kept in touch with a lot of people that were impact with me throughout the past few years. All of us seemed to land someplace where the culture is much more rewarding than before. If you have 15+ years in the company, I would recommend working until a severance offer is given. Pay close attention to the rules of future your employment within the severance paperwork as it may bar you from working for a competitor or same field for a certain period of time.

Many have said this, but I'll reiterate. There are definitely opportunities outside Verizon. You just have to keep that old mindset that Verizon has ingrained into your daily mindset out and know your worth. It's hard to move on after being there for a while (union or non union position). At a place like Verizon, don't be complacent and you'll never have to worry.

Looking back, Verizon was a great experience and the forward thinking mindset of customers and network first/priority made it a valuable entity.

Take your experience, knowledgebase and skills and apply it to something deserving of your time and effort. You'll be fine.

@ax Stock will always go up 6%-10% when this happens. Nothing makes Wall Street happy than knowing more money is being saved.

@aw I have to disagree with you and agree with the OP. Ive seen it several times now, there’s that one person who thinks they are better than everyone else and gets on the nerves of their team and their boss. They always are the ones to go in previous RIFs.

While I do agree with some of this, I do not agree with the statement that ADs and Managers are picking people out that don't fit. Every AD i have worked for has been on my side. They know what it takes to run the business and bridge up to the higher ups. I agree with the other poster, this is all in the hands of the VPs at this point, dont blame ADs for what's going to happen. They usually fight for you to stay in most cases.

These decisions are absolutely not being made by the direct manager. They may have given input on who the lowest ranking employee is, but this action coming will reach into performers, in some teams depending on what they do, exceeding performers too. SR directors and above are making these decisions. Please don't take it out on the Managers, if we make it. Good luck all.

@a4 what does a persons location / work preference have to do with this? If anything, they would promote more WFH and close out smaller offices.

Ever since I’ve been in Verizon they’re always been top heavy with management. Period my opinion they could get rid of all the directors and all of the second liners immediately. You do need first liners to run the craft. And then get rid of senior vice president‘s vice president Etc. There’s too many of those positions doing repetitive work.Bye Bye Bosses

If this gut is as big as everyone says on here, the company still needs competent folks to do the job whether they get paid more than the average or not.

IMO Downsizing non performing locations, 100% WFH folks, low performers will be first on the pecking order.

3 Days RTO + Location Hubs were the first steps. Next is the big wigs and who is in and who is out. And then the rest of us peons. Finally it'll be a massive reorg simplifying the complex org structure we have that has lots of redundant functions.
