It's been round after round of layoffs, and I keep asking myself the same question: has any of this actually worked? The numbers might look good on paper, but morale is in the gutter and the best people are walking. The cuts aren't solving anything, they're just making the problem worse.

@an A lot of really rich people have the majority of their wealth invested in AI. Who ever wins that race will control everything. This is high stakes they are playing all in on a poker hand. Even if it tears down the world economy in the short term. Our lives are a gamble they are willing to take... There are considerable cracks opening up already in the financial markets. Bond yields are rising due to bond selloffs and it is not just in the US. Globally investors are losing faith in governments abilities to control debt. When yields go up stock prices go down. This could be a really rough September/October which are historically bad months for markets. This will be followed by the mid-term elections which are primed to be a real drama with a lot on the line. There will clearly be problems with ballot counts and endless lawsuits. A lot of bad things could happen between now and the end of the year and the horizon looks even worse. I wouldn't want to be losing my job right now but a lot of people will be. On the bright side it is cooling off so we should have less wildfires and maybe the droughts will subside a little.
@aa hopefully that makes you feel better.
Why pay people who do not work. Who do not go ti a workplace. Who defraud, practice time theft and coffee badging.
Honestly - If you owned a company would you? Would you go more into debt paying people to do nothing all day?
Every sentient person should already have known
Oracle stock options are worthless with the OpenAI fiasco, employees should have taken the stock - now they can RIF you and give you nothing legitimately.
The only way for OpenAI to even approach their promises would be to aggressively and purposely destroy the human employment economy and charge human-job-like salaries for AI bots to replace them - not $20/month subs for humans to tinker toy around with AI, but AI "seats" acting as employees with 5 and 6-digit salary-like fees.
Expect AI companies to pivot to directly marketing AI seats against humans as fast as they can sidestep or mute the ethical and moral concerns of Skynet'ing our societal norms
The AI dilemma of profitability vs societal impact is another world-changing kick-the-can abdication of responsibility, but unlike climate change, population, immigration, et al - AI will now show its cards much faster and earlier, and the effects won't be hidden for long; AI is on a month-to-month countdown now, far surpassing all those other slow-moving nightmares.
@OP
Obviously you still have not learned to accept the corportat cramdown and relax your butt muscles. It isn't too late to start practicing now.
Oracle is trying to hang on to technology leadership but that ship has long sailed. Only sad thing is that fu--ing Thomas Kurian brought his posse to Google Cloud
For what? For Larry’s ego.
This is ceo 101. Larry doesn’t bare about people. He wants to win. He wants to be number 1. He doesn’t care about the lives he has to ruin to get there.
That's the thing: the numbers don't look good on paper. Massive debt with promises of payback from a company (OpenAI) that has never turned a profit. The street is starting to look at this with much more scrutiny.
All the "non-GAAP" results in the world won't save them from reality.
My salary was used to fund AI debt, not job replacement
No staff to do the actual work, and resolve issues = unhappy cloud customers.
well its 6 months after another 6 months and now another 6 months -
Oracle still in debt and just doing the same thing over and over with no results - is called .................... Insanity
Unfortunately its at the disposal of such great people and talent .
it's ongoing cannibalization to keep financing all-in bet on AI. there is no plan B. if OpenAI goes down, Oracle will likely go bankrupt.
