Several people on our sales team were surplussed on Wednesday-all had good numbers compared to those of use that weren't impacted, our sales manager said that the selection process was above his pay grade and that she had no say what-so-ever in the selection, one of the sellers let go was the oldest person on the team, a white guy who was crushing it this year and had the highest production on the team, the other two who were let go were also older members of the team , on e them was third on the team in production. Those of us left are newer to the team and are glad we were spared but are trying to understand how this selection process works

Have seen it done differently in the same department. Top dogs used to get the leeway to make that final determination as to how it is carried out. Have seen some groups give the AD input about the final list. Didn’t change the number but some were able to keep their jobs.
@OP I was told LIFO Last In Fisrt Out.....
if your not union they can use a dart board to do the selections!
if your bargained for can't get around seniority!!
“They have direct and critical input to the process. Do not let them tell you otherwise.”
There is NO leadership in this company. It’s a bunch of bean counters, changing target quotas and the better you do, the greater the penalties. As you mentioned the tenured sales producers are high targets to be moved out of the business. We saw a top multi year producer be te--orized by his “bosses”, including when he returned from a PTSD recovery retreat, he was placed on PIP and eventually managed out on baseless lies.
They work out of Fear, Flight, Fight or Fawn. Those bosses will eventually have their judgement day and will have to sleep with their BS.
Good riddance and I’m going to check in on those who have been impacted, especially my mentor who was a star seller and worked out of the business. Pathetic losers these ”leaders” (not)
@OP It sounds like ageism and reduction based on seniority and probably boils down due to salary. It's dirty and the cop out "I didn't know or had no input" seems rather hollow. Folks lose their integrity when they think their job may be on the line too.
Sellers are stack ranked for surplus. They dont just take the current into account, they look at 3,4,5 years to get a good picture of the seller. So if you crush it this year but didnt do so hot the last few, you could be on the list.
In the past Sales Mgrs had more influence. This round it was 4th lines making the decisions.
That’s the classic lie that comes up for every single one of these events. Of course, they are going to say that. It is not true. They have direct and critical input to the process. Do not let them tell you otherwise.
Unfortunately, Sales always gets hit hard. I have seen Sellers who are high performers, well-liked by their clients and peers get let go. Some roles may pay well, but that is a tough role that I’d never be able to perform. The “good” news is, most Sales people have great networks because of what they do, and it doesn’t seem to take them long to adapt and find another employer very quickly. I am sorry to see anyone lose their job after giving so much effort, and I wish they all land where they have the tools and respect they deserve from their new company.
An AD told me that they have to rank their employees from best to worst, but they don’t directly choose who is impacted.
