I love to hear from the ex-IT guys on why they could not deliver and do a decent job. The new corp president and CIO have been clear that IT costs are 1.5 times more than the average retailer of Follett's size. I have worked with some fine and... — read more
Hey Gang!
Me and some of the neighborhood kids are gonna get together and start our own bookstore in my dad's garage! My mom's gonna sew our aprons! Who wants to join us?
@1502 1503. This blog is not for what you are doing.
I heard 431 textmgr was fired last year. Harrasment. Looks like still harrassing.
Don't blame IT...
I was laid off in October from IT. What the others are saying about IT are spot on. We were understaffed and often overworked. Large projects were almost always rushed into production. Most managers (not all) tended not to listen to the developers... — read more

Friends and Fans Follies
Has anyone else noticed a new floating window over the checkout page for the customer to verify their shipping address? It's giving some customers fits (depending on what device they're using) trying to check out for the sale. Several called today... — read more
Kmart and Sears
These two stores are horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.
customers get an error trying to use code on line
But they will get the discount anyway. This absolutely ridiculous.
What does the future hold?
With our new leadership, here is the results from their last company. Breaking out Kmart, the chain had a third-quarter operating loss of $171 million, slightly wider than a loss of $164 million the prior year. Kmart-specific revenues totaled $2.92... — read more
Severance
you have to send in your seperation papers before they send out your severance check. You have 21 days to send it back after you receive your separation papers to sign.
Severance?
Has anyone received their severance check? According to my ADP account, a check was cut on December 6th but I have yet to receive it. I have not sent in my separation agreement yet.
Another sale that belongs on Epic Fail
Sounds like this is the third sale with technical issues.....maybe Follett belongs on the site epicfail.com
contracts
How long will it take for schools to be fed up and not renew or is something else in the works the store employees aren't aware of? Waiting for further news on the FedEx drop off/pickup.
Friends and Fans
If your going to have a friends and fans sale after cutting my store staff, can you please make sure the systems and processes are working? This is the third special sale in the last two months and all had problems.

Ex IT Associate
I understand your point and agree with it mostly. The complexity of development at Follett is not understood by anyone outside of IT and hell even some of those in IT(although I wonder if that is different anywhere else). Unfortunately the... — read more

New Vice President of Talent Acquisition for Follett. Layoff many lower paid workers, hire and promote a few much higher paid workers. More chiefs and less indians.
Anonymous 1324 - You missed my point
Thanks for the age old discussion of centralization vs decentralization. I agree each has it place. However my point was specifically the lack of understanding and support executive management has for IT. The current IT structure was established over... — read more
I never thought IT sucked. Just the anitquated computers we have to use.
Reading these posts makes one think this company is government run.
severance and Layoffs.
more layoffs? less severance? Probably in March? Anyone know?
@Ex IT Associate, execution and delivery is all that matters.
Finding the "right" IT org structure has been an ongoing discussion for as long as I have been in this business. Centralized models give the greatest control and provide the best opportunities for cost optimization. Unfortunately one can easily loose... — read more

Solid IT requires a strong federated model. Follett isn't that.
Follett acquires small businesses that have been neglected by their former parent organization. IT compliance has to near impossible across the many networks and organizations that need to be traversed. The application process described by current... — read more

Don't blame the messenger (IT)
For those of you that are/were outside the IT department, it is really easy to blame them for bad results. However the reality is very different. There are numerous issues within Follett which drastically impacts the ability of IT to deliver quality... — read more
Layoffs
The layoffs are not done. The severance will be less. Best option is to get your resume on the street ASAP. This goes for store level, FHEG to FSS.

Who knows, maybe it will be new inexperienced support people talking to inexperienced part time store people. Support will be referring issues to outsourced developers, AP and accounting.
Why should we remain loyal?
That is the difficult part. For us still working until the next layoffs, there is not much incentive to be loyal and go over and above. Our time will come, just like those before us.
Received the severance check, $1222.00 turned into $744.30 after taxes. I told my kids not to expect anything for christmas. I will barely make
my bills this month. Had to apply for food stamps (no biggie since I was full time and made so little I have been on them many times this year) its sad to be a full time worker and qualify for food stamps! The unemployment check is laughable as it is... — read more
