Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Question about office location change request/exception

My department was recently told we’re being moved to another Wells Fargo location within the next few months. I currently live about five minutes from my office, but the new location will be roughly a 25–30 minute drive each way.

I’m trying to figure out the correct process for requesting a location exception to remain where I currently work. I’ve heard different things — some say go through your manager, while others say HR.

I’m not exactly optimistic about WF accommodating it given the direction they’ve taken lately with RTO, co-location, and flexibility, but I’m going to pursue it and at least make them explain why it makes sense to send me 30 minutes away when I currently work five minutes from home.

Has anyone recently requested a location exception? Who did you go through, and were you successful?

Serious responses only, please.

Why should you be special? What about the person who now may go from a 30 minute commute to a 5 minute? Ask your manager and go from there. Maybe your department won't care.

@ba

What is BS is there are many people who got exceptions (especially in groups like cyber and tech) that they do not have to do that since they are the chosen ones. Trust me they are in roles they could fill by people in core locations if they had too.

Winston to CIC poster here … 58 years old, so will retire once I get let go. Have been strategically preparing for it with spending cuts, moving money around, etc. commute has been manageable and I’m getting stuff taken away from me, so it’s right around the corner I suspect. 60 days and 1 year of severance, then sliding into retirement. Wife is retired USAF, so medical covered. Good luck all.

There will always be other excuses to downsize people, and the overcompensated consulting agencies will never tire of recommending new ones. Charlotte is the biggest layoff target in the country right now. Maybe the W-S to Charlotte commute just wants a delay on their timeline. If so, mission accomplished.

Ask manager. We have several on team in different offices, and our group is not lenient about RTO policy for hours, etc. As long as there is space they shouldn't care.

@ba , Sorry to share this, but if you were hoping to be displaced you should have declined the drive from Winston to CLT when it was initially proposed to you; and you would have qualified for a "substantial position change" triggering a severance package. If you told them you'd agree to commute, you waived the package opportunity. Your only chance to get laid off now with a package is of you are included on efficient actions, but they are probably waiting for you to quit.

Same happened to me. 10 minute commute turned into 35-45 minutes and freeway traffic. Costing me $250 extra a month. I didn’t need my raise anyways with Trump ending inflation! Oh wait

Better to ask for forgiveness then ask for permission. I would work at whatever location I’d most convenient for you. If flagged, plead ignorance. FRTO and all the worthless bootlickers supporting it.

Drive to cr-p office 1 day a week, drive to close office 1 day a week, and take a half day off each non-holiday week. Presto, you rarely go to cr-p office and don't get flagged in some A holes report.

Don’t even ask. It won’t be approved, and even the asking can be used as a prejudicial factor. Nobody will say it, but it will subtly factor into how you are viewed.

For the person mentioning the >50% in other office flag, the reporting has recently changed. It now flags ANY presence in a non assigned location and the manager is supposed to click into the detail to see when and where. You can take your chances on staying low threshold but in a world where we seem to be grasping at any “pattern” of adverse behavior - you choose how risk averse you want to be.

It's not a competition, a 30 minute commute and a 2 hour commute are both useless wastes of time. We shouldn't be doing either of them

Sorry, but I drive from Winston-Salem to CIC, so can’t feel too sorry. It was either drive to CLT or not have a job. Have been doing this for almost 18 months, hoping to be displaced…

Out of touch much? There are people who are commuting 2 hours one way and haven’t been able to get accommodations. I don’t think an extra 20 minute commute is going to be convincing but hey - give it a try!

The people that want this to be a strictly layoff discussion board are so funny. Good luck enforcing that on an anon forum. I've picked up a lot of good intel over time on RTO and monitoring measures because this board is so active.

Ew I would be so annoyed. Are they going to pay for your lunch now that you can’t go home to prepare it everyday? This is wack.

You're worried about a 20-30 minute commute while we all sit under an axe every two weeks??? Sorry, but wow. If you're that worried about a 20-30 minute commute, then just quit now because your manager is going to laugh in your face and rightfully so.

They won't care unless you can make up a medical accommodation and have a Dr sign off.

Otherwise, you'll need to beg your manager.

Also, you can't change the address yourself. Only your manager can do it. And if you do get it changed there's probably someone that audits that stuff for your group and it'll get corrected.

You're hosed. They don't care you one individual. Since it's only 20-30 you make the commute or say good buy (without a package). Good luck.

Thanks for the info and the part about working one day a week in another location is also very helpful. Truly agree these policies make no sense and I am convinced they’re just trying to make our lives as miserable as they can to force us to ultimately quit. I also wondered if it would put a target on my back just for asking outside of the fact it sounds like a complete waste of time. Sounds like that is the case.

I tried to do this myself - I live where I could ride a bike to one location, but I burn 30 minutes each way to another location instead, just to sit in a cube and take teams calls. I was not successful in obtaining an exception.

The report that monitors in-office days, also monitors if >50% of those days are at your assigned location. That's an allowance built in to the monitoring because they know that people sometimes travel between offices. Which technically means you can work at the location closer to you once a week without tripping any reporting flags. I do very occasionally work at the office close to me when I have something going on where I might need to pop home for lunch, and I haven't heard anything from my manager about it. But I really try to limit doing this, just out of an abundance of caution.

Good luck to you, it's sh-t like this that really exposes the absurdity of Wells' RTO policies.

Not gonna happen.... go with it for now and try to change it in first quarter 2027. If you try to change now you'll make yourself a target.

It won’t be approved. I have several people on my team who tried to do this in Charlotte and they would not allow them to get an exception. Also, you will show up on a naughty report if you don’t report to the office you are assigned.
