McClatchy Media has eliminated seven unionized journalism positions across four Washington state newspapers. This wave of layoffs also impacted at least 90 journalists at publications nationwide. The affected papers include outlets in Tacoma, Kennewick, and Olympia, in addition to the Bellingham Herald. Union representatives stated these cuts will significantly weaken the newspapers' ability to cover local and state issues. The guild also expressed concern that these reductions will hinder the press's role in holding powerful entities accountable.
