Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

New Hybrid Model?

There is a rumor around the Irving office saying that the hybrid model will be shifting on October 1st to 3 days a week (not new) but also have 8 hours a day minimum counted and holidays and PTO would no longer count as in in office day.

Anyone else hear similar?

Dashboard shows only 28% of global employee base as adhering to the 3 days. So Citi is going to put the other 72% on a pip? 😂

Oh, this is amazing hahahaha. “Sites with ongoing low adherence will see their in-office requirements increase.” People no going in 3 will suddenly go in 4-5 after you took holidays away? Please make it make sense and then look up what incentive your employees looks like.

Latest HR communication:

Colleagues who do not meet the three day in office requirement consistently will be placed on an attendance pip. In addition sites with ongoing low adherence will see their in office requirements increase.

It’s giving too broke to pay severance. Attrition is near non-existent to the dismay of any org that had hoped people would just leave on their own. PIPs just force more work on managers that would much rather not be bothered and there is always the risk of the employee passing a PIP. A failed PIP based off of attendance, however, is an easy way to let you go and not pay severance (see severance plan document for details on how you can be disqualified).

Maybe it’s for easier layoffs ? In EMEA you cannot be fired „remotely”. You need to be in office to officially hand over documents to sign. Some people knowing that are on „vacations” medical holidays etc ;)

@g2 it’s now 3 8 hour days, effective immediately. If the site is non compliant, it could be increased to up to 5 days. If you do not comply, then a PIP may be raised.

Google's definition for Malicious Compliance:

Malicious compliance is the practice of strictly following a rule or instruction to the exact letter, even when you know it will cause a bad, inefficient, or counterproductive result.

How It Works

Letter vs. Spirit: You follow the exact wording of a policy while completely ignoring its intended purpose or common sense.

Plausible Deniability:

You cannot easily get in trouble because you technically did exactly what you were told to do ["I followed the rules"].

Protest:
People use it as a passive-aggressive way to show how foolish, impractical, or flawed a rule or a manager's order is.

Common Examples:

No Overtime:
A boss bans all overtime to save money. An employee stops working immediately at 5:00 p.m. right in the middle of an urgent project, causing a missed deadline.

Strict Approvals: A manager demands written approval for every single purchase. An employee submits a formal request to buy a single 50-cent pen, clogging up the approval system.

CCing the Boss on Everything:
A micromanager demands to be copied on all emails to monitor progress.

The employee complies by copying the manager on every single internal chatter, trivial update, and automated notification, flooding their inbox.

Why It Happens:

Employees feel micromanaged, ignored, or frustrated by poor leadership.

Workers feel unsafe or tired of speaking up, so they use literal obedience as a quiet form of pushback.

This entire RTO push is a soft bluff. Management is not going to put people on attendance PIPs for not meeting the 3 day rto requirement. They would have to put half the bank on a PIP including see you next Tuesday Jane, cause majority of departments are not compliant. The updated HWW dashboard doesn’t have any new info compared to the former tableau report. The major change is purely UI based. Remember people, apes together strong! Don’t be sheep, have some self respect

@e7
Exactly. Give Citi what it wants. It's a situation of be careful of what you wish for. You just might get it and regret it !

Log out after 8 hours at 5:00pm NO matter what time zone you're in, in the USA.

Do NOT attend meetings, take phone calls or reply to emails or text messages after 5:00pm.

This is a form of RRTO Revenge RTO as reported by the media.

And then When, Not if there are emergencies or fires 🔥 to extinguish that happened overnight, so FVCKEN WHAT??!! This is the situation Citi wants. You already did or worked your 8 hours times 3 RTO Days!

People, you need to turn the beat around and use Citi's we@pons against itself and let Citi Fvck Itself Over with its own policies, mandates, etc..

This is NO different than playing a sport. You use an opponent's perceived strength back against them, so that it becomes one of their weaknesses!

@e8 I appreciate it. I wonder if spending fewer than eight hours in the office on a given day will show up as a non-adherence

@e4 As of now, it just shows the number of days of Non-Adherence for each week.

Everyone should stop taking late night calls with their cross-region teams.

Picture this:
NAM team logs out at 5 pm and won't be seen until next morning.
APAC team logs out before the NAM team logs im.
All cross region communication only via email/Teams.

Sound impractical but this is what aligns with the 'full day on office' policy and should be followed.

I saw the email forwarded to me from my director as an FYI. How will they monitor the 8hrs? We have swipe in and out but across the border not everyone does. Tampa is empty at 2pm. No one has been doing 8 hrs. I commute 70 mins to and back this absurd.

Currently, they are only reporting incoming badge swipes for the purposes of RTO. In office hours are currently not in the picture -- although this might change in the future using desktop logins/logouts. Badge out data for this purpose is not practical since many offices don't have badge out. If folks continue to abuse the system by coffee badging, then I am sure more emphasis would be put on in-office hours. Just keep that in mind and understand that while you might be getting away with this in the short-term, you will be ruining it for everyone else long-term when they start required 8 hours as a result.

Going forward, if a week has a holiday, then the three days in the office MUST be from the remaining 4 non-holiday days in the week. Not sure if the same applies to planned days though. Also, they are beefing up tracking of who is in office and who isn't, and actually including consequences for those not meeting the requirement, although they did not go into details.
